 Published on November 26th 2001 It takes a good ska-punk album to reach God-like status with me. I mean, I enjoy Reel Big Fish, Less than Jake, etc, but only a few albums get past the point of "good" and enter the realm of "wonderful". Bands like Slapstick, Operation Ivy, The Sucide Machines and Goldfinger all inhabit my ska-punk hall of fame, and add to that list, Buck-o-9's "28 Teeth". Bo9's popularity took off in 1997 during the ska craze, although they already had been toiling in their native San Diego for years. Once No Doubt, Sublime and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones took off in the mainstream, things took off for Bo9 as well. They released "28 Teeth", a fast-paced ska-punk gem that easily surpasses many of the bigger ska-punk releases of the time. "28 Teeth" yielded a minor hit with "My Town", a poppy ode to San Diego. It has an unforgettable hook, great horn parts, and great up-beat guitar. It was one of the first skaish type songs I ever heard, and it was the second ska-punk CD I ever bought. Anyway, I digress. There are all kinds of great songs on this disc. "Nineteen", "Jennifer's Cold", "Steve Was Dead" and "Peach Fish" are all classics in my mind, and even songs that don't reach the status of the aforementioned cuts are still worth the price of the CD. "Round Kid" is a quinessential ska-punk song, "Im the Man" is the requisite Joe Jackson cover, and "Record Store" always makes me long for my old job at just that sort of establishment. Bo9 even spike this disc with a little irony, on the song "What Happened To My Radio". The song includes lyrics about bands that all sound the same, that use stupid names and are force fed to us by the labels and radio programmers. cough ska craze cough. Anyway, I highly recommend this disc, and it's follow up, Libido. Bo9 get a bad rap for getting popular when they did, for simply being a ska-punk band with a video on MTV, but this disc is really a solid piece of work. It's not as politically charged as say, Op Ivy, nor does it have the manic energy of the Suicide Machines or Slapstick. It is simply a great party album, and it has enough punk in the mix to help it stand out from the glut of cookie-cutter ska-punk. Holy shit, the sainte catherines are on FAT!? I just saw them two weeks ago at a free show in Montreal playing for maybe fifty people and now they're going to be on Fat Wreck Chords. That's just fucking mindblowing. they're great i have aal their albums and they're all unique in their own way!! but this is indeed a very good album! oh, look, my buddy "oldpunker" still posts messages on this site... how's it goin' tough guy? pick a topic, we can debate, if you like... I like this record and thing Buck-o-Nine put out before this, but nobody should be going around putting their credibility on the line and recomending Libido. That is the most dissapointing record I've ever bought. I let some dumb kid borrow it and moved far away so I'd never get it back. Well,well,well-the boy who sucked ass still exists and guess what he still has no clue about music.. This cd is not great but it is fun. ----i hope to hear from you soon--oldpunker ska bands are tools of the devil. i completely forgot you reviewed Hepcat a week ago, so my comment was dumb.- fathead That was kind of a joke....I was just trying to lighten the mood. But yeah, I do own all of the Clash's stuff, The Ramones, Mission Of Burma, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Descendents, Husker Du, etc. I just didn't want to get into one of those discussions where I have to list off everything I have in a vain effort to prove that I like "real" punk. How does owning a bunch of clash cds and the tenacious d cd get you anywhere? Its Okay. When I bought it, I liked it a bunch, but after about a week, I got bored of it. I don't listen to it anymore, but I can't sell it because its too scratched up. This is one of my all time favs, too bad ska went out and they got fucked over. Fathead - Do I own any good CD's? I own a lot of the stuff you have reviewed. The reason I dont review it is because you, and a lot of other people, already have. I always try to review stuff that I know people are gonna bash on a little, its pretty fun to stir the pot. Im not gonna run down my list of what I own for you. Lets just say I own every Clash CD and Tenacious D. That alone should get me somewhere. my bad, here's my score.- fathead again they have, MAYBE, three or four good songs. i bought this cd, and regreted it. not quite as bad as RBF or Save Ferris, but not anywhere near a 9. do you own any good cd's chris?- fathead this album sucks, and Buck-O-Nine is the most overrated ska band of the third wave (yes, this includes Reel Big Fish and Save Ferris) I dont know if I would call sublime ska/punk but they are a great band. Is it just me or do some of the songs on here remind you a lot of the ramones? I think this album is very good. Definitley love "My Town" and that other song that is like "2 lovers are having that fight again... " (I forget the name)... great album! i saw this album in the dollar store when I was in philly. Nuff said. This cd means a whole lot to me. It was the first ska/punk band i got into besides sublime. That was like 5 years ago. I am very greatful for this band. This is a classic in my eyes. Such a great album. It's very good driving music, just relaxing and kicking back. Buck-O-Nine is awesome, good live show too. Buy this album. |
