There are a lot of music festivals out there, from the huge ones like Bonnaroo to mid-sized ones like Riot Rest to just plain tiny ones like the Circle City Ska Fest. If you haven't heard of the Circle City Ska Fest, don't feel bad. This was the first year, plus it happened in Indianapolis, which isn't known for it's music scene...yet. The fest was organized by Circle City Ska, a local promotion company, so it wasn't so much of a SKA fest as it was just 20 ska, punk, hardcore and reggae bands from across the Midwest (and a few from a bit further) that Circle City Ska really liked...but there was still a whole lot of ska.

HSJ released a couple albums on Jump Up, and now Cougars are on Go Kart. I reviewed both Cougars full lengths and love the crap out of them. It's gritty rock with horns though they turned their back on ska. About a year ago they booted the horns, which was a real disappointment, dudes that played with them for a decade. Haven't heard any new stuff from them lately and kinda worried they are breaking up... Greg0rb, Shot Bakerw owns. Shot Baker Played because they're a rad band. We Are the Union played because they are a rad band. The Pinstripes played because they are a rad band. EcT... Grind ska? Really? heard the pinstripes. good. yes. give bands like the slackers or aggrolites a run for they money. not a chance. i agree shot baker is awesome. but why did they play at a ska fest? Hey superskabro - random question. Did you ever hear/see Hot Stove Jimmy? They were the from Chicago and later mutated into the Cougars, but as far as ska albums I listened to the most back in the day, their last album Theme for a Major Hit was spun constantly. You should try and find that album... great minor-key, evil, rough voiced ska/rock. Cougars rule too though they gave the horn players the boot awhile back which pisses me off. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Shot Baker are freaking awesome, and they get better every time I see them. |
