Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

It's obvious that the 'Punk Goes'... people have been dying to do this since they realized that "punk" and "crunk" rhyme, but I tried to listen to it with an open mind. Frankly, I'm quite surprised that this is the same label that released Bigwig and At the Drive-In records.

Set Your Goals are one of the few decent bands on this thing and actually open the compilation in fair fashion, covering Lil Jon's "Put Yo Hood Up." In particular, the gang vocals are pretty cool.

However, from here we go into a relentless string of flavor-of-the-week bands covering flavor-of-the-week songs. Especially bad are the covers by the Secret Handshake (so whiny!), Forever the Sickest Kids and the Devil Wears Prada (screamed vocals. ugh). Whether the bands stick with their usual instrumentation or try to reproduce the cell phone sounds of the original, the results are bland and unappealling. However, I will admit, New Found Glory's closing cover of Arrested Development's "Tennesse" is listenable.

In conclusion, I have no idea how these bands can possiblely construed as "punk," and how in the world Rihanna and Will Smith are "crunk." Honestly, I'd try to avoid hearing this.

i'm considering buying this as a practical joke on myself.

You are gonna get yourself GOOD!

    My Score:

it might have been possible that the reviewer took this too seriously. there are some bad songs here, but there are some that are pretty good/funny. as maverick mentioned, the Hey Ya cover is good and so is All Time Low. but the best is Say Anything covering ODB without a doubt.

    My Score:

"They should have called it "Nu-Emo Goes Music By Black People." That would have been WAY more accurate than the original.

    UP DA CRUNX!"

    hahahaha... excellent.

and i really like the NFG cover a lot. though i might be biased since i loved the original so much and they actually treated it respectfully. otherwise, with teh exception of Set Your Goals and Say Anything, which are slightly above average, this whole thing is truly unlistenable. sad, really.

    My Score:

The Say Anything and All Time Low covers are great, and whoever it was who did "Hey Ya" (Lorene Drive, I think?) wasn't that bad, either.

The Set Your Goals cover is awful. It's not even Set Your Goals; it's basically Jordan plus Cyrus from New Found Glory playing drums. Read the liner notes.

Yeah the album is a joke, but a really poorly executed joke. Nearly all of it is filled with bands no one will remember this time next year. I thought the Say Anything cover was hilarious, and I do enjoy the At All Cost cover of Umbrella. Aside from that none of this really sticks. Some of it was so bad I couldn't even keep listening.

So I'm sure this CD does actually suck, considerably, but why bash it so seriously? Obviously the whole thing is a joke. I'm not interested in it at all but I did download the SYG song and it makes me smile. Good band.

This CD doesn't even deserve a review, it should not be acknowledged.

The sad thing is, this will outsell the next Tragedy record.

I would say this is a tragedy record.

the 'artwork' for this cd makes me feel sick. i hate everything about this release. i wish we could award albums minus' scores.

    Say Anything is hilarious..
    The Maine done good..
Blink 182 is still better than All Time Low..

    Gatsby's American Dream is amazing.

There was so much potential behind this and its disappointing that it just falls flat to me.

    Potential?

Are we thinking about the same album?

Posted by contrarian on 2008-05-03 04:02:11

No no no, Arrested Development is not "crunk,"christ on a fucking crutch

that was a long fucking time ago.

last time fearless was a good label, so was epitaph. and lookout! had yet to be sued. and suburban home hadnt asked punknews for a bailout yet. and mastodons roamed the earth.

Was it really necessary to post a review of this album?

was about to post the same thing.

Wait, SYG was one of the highlights? I stopped listening after that song because it was so bad, I had no realize that it only got worse.

    My Score:

Crap total shyte. I do agree that the NFG cover is a decent track however I do not quite think that the genius of Arrested Development fits into "Crunk" status...

Still waiting for Punk Goes Funk.

Are any of these bands actually punk?

They should have called it "Nu-Emo Goes Music By Black People." That would have been WAY more accurate than the original.

Punk Goes Metal actually had some good stuff on it. This sucks ass.

Posted by ALineInYourBook on 2008-05-02 17:41:47
    My Score:

Score is for the SYG cover. The rest of the album is a waste of disc; SYG would have been better off just releasing that one track on iTunes. Way to break down this whole album in such a short review.

Posted by canaandrumzz on 2008-05-02 17:36:20

The SYG and Say Anything songs are the only good ones. The rest, not so much. If I was into metalcore I guess I'd like the devil goes prada one. There was so much potential behind this and its disappointing that it just falls flat to me.

    Posted by mattp330 on 2008-05-02 17:12:24

this thing is awful, the only somewhat cool thing on the album is when max bemis says "n word" repeatedly instead of saying the actual slur on his odb cover. horrible album
