We couldn't have guessed that the Gaslight Anthem would take the stage only a half-hour after doors, so we missed their entire set. Fortunately, we heard the set was made up of only the four songs from the new EP, one new song and a couple from the full-length; craving a Sink or Swim-heavy set, it seemed we'd live.
A hooded fan came up just before "East Coast Fuck You!" and stole the mic right out of Greg's hands, and the band figured what the hell -- let's let him do a karaoke version of the song. The seemingly drunken fellow didn't know the words too well, at one point just constantly shouting "New York City!!! Fuck you!!!" But he gave off a classic NYHC swagger and thrusted the mic into the crowd so they could shout the (correct) lyrics back. This was when of Greg's multiple stage dives took place. At one point, Greg picked up an acoustic guitar and strummed away for several songs. This resulted in super bizarre yet hysterical moments like the slowed down, serious vibes of "I Like Your Mom" and a balladic version of the Misfits' "Hybrid Moments," which had everyone grinning and shouting along. However, the best might've been Greg's solo ukelele cover of Sick of It All's "Good Lookin' Out"; easily one of the strangest covers anyone in the audience could've witnessed, it was nonetheless really fucking funny. They also took just one request ("Quick Check Girl") and used it to kick off a four-song block that would precede the encore. That very encore seemed to end in underwhelming fashion for many in attendance, but I think the prolonged outro winded things down nicely. Overall? Damn. I've seen the Bouncing Souls plenty of times before and enjoyed it, but this definitely takes the cake. 26 songs, pretty excellent vibes for a rambunctious crowd and good times had by all. Set list (8:25-9:33, 9:35-9:46):

Tim stick with writing new Avail material instead, Avail are so fucking good. I was at the show, was real mad I missed gaslight. I've never been a fan of Tim Barry, so his set bored me. As for the Bounciong Souls, they're probably one of my favorite bands, but the show was good just not one of their best. They were a lot better when I saw them play at the Court Tavern in New Brunswick and when they played the Home for the Holiday's shows in Asbury. There's also two vids on youtube of gaslight's preformence. I was hoping to see my dunk ass somewhere online, but maybe next time :) pictures, and a little bit of video below: Every time I see a Souls review on this site, I just want to cry because I know I made the wrong decision in being a good friend and taking a weekend off for my friend's birthday instead of this show. The Gaslight dudes sent out a myspace bulletin warning everyone they'd be on early brah. I took a four and a half hour bus ride up to Manhattan from DC for this show, namely for Tim Barry and Gaslight. I'm sure I'd like the Bouncing Souls but I'be never wound up ever taking the time to really listen to them. I perused Manhattan for a few hours, then took a cab to Brooklyn. The cabbie didn't know Brooklyn and I realized that I wound up getting dropped 30 blocks south of the venue after I called my friend to google map my location to where I needed to be. (I didn't know there there was a Meserole STREET in addition to Meserole AVENUE, so "Meserole and Manhattan" weren't the most specific instructions for the cabbie i guess). I walked the 30 blocks and got there just as Gaslight was about to go on. It was pretty packed so I just downed beers for most of their set until the last two songs when I decided to work my way up. It was a good set it just sucks that it was so short, but that was to be expected since they were opening I guess. I really love and was surprised by how much love Tim Barry gets in NY, of all the times I've seen him it was second to only Richmond as far as how many people were into it and singing along and shit. I fucking love that guy. Can't wait for the Empire show with Josh Small next week. I left before the Souls since I'd never really heard em and I had tickets for Iron Man at that AMC in Times Square. I think I made friends with some Bloods on my way back to Penn Station. I don't know, for my first time being in New York I enjoyed it, I'll probably head up there for more shows more often. I'm really just rambling right now, I've had a few drinks, if you've read this far I really am sorry I think you're thinking of them fucking up Headlights... Ditch! to the point to where it didn't sound like it until they went into it acoustically. "?" was some really fast and sloppy song where Greg's vocals slowed down during a "chorus" of sorts and he went "Yeahhhh! Whooooa!" I didn't recognize it at all, but it sounded pretty old. They did not play a song I didn't know. the "?" was, i think, a new song. Greg was surprisingly crazy that night, one of the most enegetic times I've ever seen him. I was at this show. First off, thanks for the set list. Few songs from The Gold Record show was fucking bizarre. greg had a pretty weird monologue in there, the acoustic i like your mom, the ukulele SOIA cover, pretty much all old songs, it had a weird vibe though. but by my count this was my 19th souls show, so it's good to see them mix it up. Awesome lineup, wish I could have seen the show. Score is for the Pittsburgh show. Gaslight should play after Tim Barry, come on. Tim is good, but Gaslight is Gaslight. Pittsburgh also got cheated out of Navesink and Wooderson. I've seen them 3 times so far and have yet to hear Navesink live. They'll be back. Fantastic show. Brian, Gaslight's setlist was: Why they don't play "So Jersey" more often is beyond me. Just an amazing song. I love the Bouncing Souls sooooo fucking much, but I do gotta admit it's kind of weak to see the same set-lists for every show of this tour (minus one or two songs). forgot to add the score in below post, duh sounds like a great show. i love the souls. score is for the souls, the review, and greg playing the ukulele score is for the gaslight anthem, tim barry, the souls, and dropping the F-bomb in a review. |
