Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

The new effort by Orebro, Swedish punk rockers Millencolin is a strong leap forward for a pop-punk band. The band's previously big leap forward occurred with 2000's Pennybridge Pioneers, which saw the band playing with more of a pop-rock base than melodic skatepunk. Nevertheless, the new record sings a change in the band's history: The music is still catchy, but the general feeling you have after listening is that it's a solid rock record. No punk or skate hardcore is present here.

Machine 15 is the result of about three years of silence after the previous work Kingwood, which I honestly found really boring. Contrary to that album, on this new disc the band gets directly to the point: There is no empty space for fillers or for hard-to-get melodies. You can clearly hear the influences of what the band's members have been doing outside of Millencolin: Nikola Sarcevic with his solo project, Mathias Färm with his Franky Lee band, and even Erik Ohlsson with his artwork skills (he has been doing the artwork of the band's album for several albums now). On a prodution note, the band worked with Lou Giordano (Sugar, Taking Back Sunday, Plain White T's, the Ataris, Sunny Day Real Estate) on this record -- they already worked together on Home from Home -- and mixed the album with Michael Ilbert, who has lent his skills to records by the likes of the Hives and Roxette.

Even though the first single "Detox" is quite annoying, I must say that the record is made of strong songs: tunes like "Done Is Done" where you can hear violins, or "Come On", with its outrageously poppy chorus, which caught my attention from the start. "Broken World" is a blending rock song, with harmonic guitar riffs made to piss off the hardcore fans maybe, and Nikola's vocals just sounding awesome; "Who's Laughing Now," preceded by the 11-second song "Centerpiece," is a mid-tempo anthem reminding me of Bad Religion's The Gray Race era, while the other songs, well, they all take perfect shape in the meaning of the record: "Brand New Game," "Ducks & Drakes" and "Danger for Stranger" are all possible hits and are going to kill the fans during the live shows. Seriously, I had a hard time discovering a bad song; maybe only the first single, "Detox," is the one miss, but in general, the album is a great combination of energy, melody and rock.

This is the new classic Millencolin album. I know it sounds like an oxymoron, but this is it: a record where you will find the new Millencolin in perfect shape.

This is a reallyt good album, and if you're a fan of millencolin, this should apepal to you.

The album before "Kingwood", I think it was called "Home from Home", really blew arse. I think Millencolin was going for a "rock" album, but it was really boring....

I dig this album, I wanna hear "done is done" live, there are a couple of filler tracks. Kingwood had some faster bad religion type punk songs, but I do like what they're goin' for here, especially "route one"(face to faceish?)

The only album they have made so far that i like every single song on.

Fuck off the all of you! They have changed no direction...it was exactly what I expected ...songs to sing to. And whoever says Pennybridge Pioneers suck.....go listen to G.B.H or Crass! Why would you listen to Millencolin if you dont like pop punk!

Nothing can compare to Life on a plate.

Score is for the review. Write more betters.

Only listened to the album once so far, but it was pretty much exactly what I expected: nothing amazing, but not terrible, either.

Just listened to the myspace stream. I liked the opening track and "Brand New Game", but there's a whole lot of filler on this album. Also, some of these lyrics are pretty bad.

Maybe my opinion will change with some more listens, but pretty disappointed initially.

    My Score:

no that's true. the lyrics are by no means terrible. It's the kind you'd find on a pop/rock album like this. They're predictable if anything. It's different, but i can dig it.

hit their stride with "For Monkeys" but this is still a good, catchy pop-punk album.

100% disagree with Scruffy. 99% of the people on this site probably d as well.

Posted by Scruffy on 2008-05-07 17:06:51

No, we're ripping on it because the lyrics are terrible, the production ruins it, there's nowhere near the inventiveness of Kingwood and, as was said before, its mind numbingly boring.

Pennybridge isn't that great, either. People need to get over it. The band hit their stride with Home From Home and their peak with Kingwood.

Posted by victim on 2008-05-07 16:24:26

I wouldn't trash it but I definitely wouldn't call it a classic either. While I couldn't personally get into it, It made for OK listening so I'm not complaining.

all you nay-sayers are fail. it's a real good record and ripping on it because it's not pennybridge is pretty unfair.

"Kingwood, which I honestly found really boring"

    I really liked Kingwood.
Meh is about all I can say about this album. It was ok, nothing great, and pretty weak compared to just about their whole back catalog.

I must admit I was quite disappointed by this. There are some decent tracks but it certainly is'nt as good as their previous records.

    My Score:

If that's an 8/10, Pennybridge is a 80/10. I like evey album they do less than the previous one since PP. This one is frankly boring. I tried to get into it cause Millencolin was playing in Milan last week (I think it the same for calrupanddie), but I really couldn't, it's boring.

Posted by damnitsderek on 2008-05-07 02:57:22

If this is better than Kingwood, I'll pick this up.

Posted by inagreendase on 2008-05-06 23:54:07

Though I haven't really listened to them in a long time, Pennybridge and Home from Home are great records.

Kingwood was disappointing; it tried too hard to be a mix of those two and came off boring as a result.

The first 2 songs on this aren't bad, but I had little to no motivation to get all the way through it.

Thanks for the abbreviated memories, Millencolin. We'll always have Tony Hawk.

    My Score:

An alright album, but nowhere near the millencolin form i would expect.
I think Kingswood was a great album, didnt think their was to much filler on it either.

Saw millencolin live the other day, was a great performance.
The whole time the other band members wanted to play old songs, but Nikola wanted to play the new ones. From what i can gather, its more Nikola that wants millencolin to head in this direction

I was bored out of my mind when I listened to this

listening to the myspace stream right now and i agree with the score. only crappy song is Vicious Circle, but otherwise it's good. little slower, but not too slow. what's with the feedback tracks though...this isn't Paint it Black.

I thought kingwood was rad. That was a rock record too, all things considered. The thing is for a band like this to put out a good record time after time i think is a pretty notable feat. Think Strung Out, face to face (ignorance is bliss isnt bad its just slow and different), gameface, samiam. Hell i lost where i was going with this, but I like this record.

Millencolin fucking sucks now! They haven't released anything good since Life On A Plate. Boos and hisses all around!

This is the first Millencollin record I've ever listened to and I though it was pretty okay.

    The lyrics are AWFUL though.

Posted by baseball on 2008-05-06 11:34:39

Kingwood was really good at times but overall the album was rather weak. I don't really mind where Millencolin has gone, I think they write pretty damn good rock/pop songs for what it is.

I've only heard "Brand New Game" but I enjoy that song. I can definitely see how this could be bad though if they go too far in that direction.

I totally disagree about Kingwood having so much fillers.
This new album is boring and the strong track aren't so strong. They tried something that didnt work very well.

    My Score:

Been a fan for a while so I listened to the stream and for the most part found it boring. From what I recall the first 3 or 4 songs were pretty solid then it went downhill from there.
That said I thought Kingwood was the same, a few good songs and the rest not bad just very bland.

Posted by Scruffy on 2008-05-06 10:29:07

I knew this album would get a good score, and that the review would bash Kingwood.

Seriously, this album is boring and feels inspirationless. While I do respect that they didn't backtrack to gain back old fans, this has nothing on KIngwood. I don't know whjat you're smoking to think that Kingwood has "filler" or hard to get melodies, but, having never been a Millencolin fan before that album, every song hit me instantly.
