Cancer Bats / Johnny Truantlive in Brighton (2008)live show Reviewer Rating: Contributed by: chrisafi (others by this writer | submit your own) Published on May 20th 2008
So, this show wins points for being bizarre given that it fell right in the middle of Brighton's The Great Escape Festival meaning this potentially brilliant night of hardcore got moved. To mid-day. Indeed, the show was advertised as a "hardcore matinee performance" (say what?) and so the Cancer Bats as headliners would hit the stage at 3:15 in the afternoon, a bizarre time to experience a headlining hardcore act [Living an hour from New York City, reading this is mildly weird. - Ed.]. The venue itself was small and intimate, perfect for the hardcore treats that awaited the crowd, which was a good size given the time of day.

Well as I say in the review - the set leaned heavily on new stuff and was full of energy BUT I just didn't find it that exciting or captivating. If a band is going to play a bunch of songs that haven't been released yet, they have to be songs that are of a high standard, not simply technically impressive. DragonForce are technically impressive but that doesn't make them exciting, innovative or amazingly enjoyable I wasn't at the Brighton show, but I did see pretty much the same lineup at the Barfly in Cambridge; if Johnny Truant played anything like they did in Cambridge at this particular show, your review of them is completely wide of the mark. The replacement bassist, additional guitarist (making them a 5-piece) and hard-hitting new tracks (5 of the 8 tracks played came from their upcoming 'No Tears for the Creatures') combined make this version of JT a band with incredible energy who, without the slightest difficulty, captivated the Barfly crowd. One of the most energetic, technically-sound live shows I've seen in a while, which, with all due respect, I am appalled to see given a 6 out of 10. It's time UK bands like JT were given due credit. Also, Cancer Bats put on a surprisingly good show. most thorough review from a gig from over here in some time - good stuff So wait, this was a hardcore...matinee? No way! That should read French Immersion from Birthing the Giant - sorry! i dont seem to remember them having a song called "birthing the giant"... | Features
