Though I found Tides' 2006 EP, From Silence, only a promising followup to their 2005 full-length, Resurface, it was still decent enough. But after catching them live earlier this year, I now know where their true power lives: live and in person, in dingy, dark bars where their swelling guitars, budding atmospheres and colossal thrust can be best conveyed from stacks of ear-shredding amps and its audience awash in a mild buzz.

I hadn't heard either of these bands, but apparently they are doomy and post rock so I gave it a shot. Tides was mediocre, like a passable Pelican or Russian Circles, but I thought the Giant track was pretty sweet. It reminded me of the stuff June Paik puts out ... but now as crazy, just more epic. Tides get 6/10 and Giant get 7.5/10. Not a bad split considering the length of the cd and the price. the tides song "the invisible" on this is fucking mind blowing. a Giant is fucking insane, i love that band. On my on curring holy shit this band is from my hometown while stumbling over Verse who had been here for years, I also stumbled over Tides and was equally impressed Both awesome bands. | Features
