Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell (Deluxe)
Register to Vote: Rock the Vote, powered by Credo Mobile

This is something new, and hopefully Aubin, Kip, and Shindo will all post their choices too. Let's get right down to it.

TOP TEN RELEASES OF 2001:
Honorable Mentions: Hot Water Music - A Flight and a Crash, Reubens Accomplice - I Blame The Scenery, Rival Schools - United By Fate, Cake - Comfort Eagle, Brand New - Your Favorite Weapon, Pete Yorn - musicforthemorningafter, Ben Folds - Rockin' The Suburbs, Further Seems Forever - The Moon Is Down, Dismemberment Plan - Change, Radiohead - Amnesiac, and a bunch more
10. Small Brown Bike - Dead Reckoning

  • This album is off the the register for intensity, with it's wicked bass and drum interplay and it's fist-pumping choruses. Good times.
    9. Thursday - Full Collapse
  • Groundbreaking in emotional hardcore, at least for me. I still don't like the production, though, damn Victory puts too much echo and reverb on everything.
    8. Tool - Lateralus
  • The metal gods return with a 4 years in the making schooling on all the nu-metal crap that exists today. A much better comeback than Weezer.
    7. Soulcracker - At Last, For You
    6. Diffuser - Injury Loves Melody
    5. Cursive - Burst And Bloom
    4. The Faint - Danse Macabre
    3. Ted Leo/Pharmacists - The Tyranny Of Distance
  • [read original review here]
    2. The [International] Noise Conspiracy - A New Morning, Changing Weather
  • The second best album of the year. Why? Because it combines incredibly intelligent, highly political, and ridiculously informative lyrics along with wonderfully dancable proto-punk beats. The only thing to beat it out?
    1. System Of A Down - Toxicity
  • The best album of the year. Why? Because it combines incredibly intelligent, highly political, and ridiculously informative lyrics along with some of the heaviest hardcore beats the world has ever seen. Serj's vocal delivery is amazing, and I compare him both vocally and lyrically to Jello Biafra. The band's music is nothing short of mindblowing. Do yourself a favor and get this album.

THE THREE BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENTS OF 2001:
    1. Weezer - The Green Album
    2. Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American
  • Singer Jim Adkins pretty much sums up the whole album in the last song's lyrics "I could be so much more than this." I agree, Jim, I agree.
    3. Alkaline Trio - From Here To Infirmary
  • [read original review here]

THE MOST ANTICIPATED ALBUM OF 2002:
Well duh, like I wouldn't say the new Bad Religion album. I've already heard it, and let me tell you it is a shoe-in for my top ten of 2002 already [and I'm not even that big of a BR fan, although that seems to be changing]. If you really want to hear it, IM me and we'll see what we can do, mp3 wise. Runner ups to the "most anticipated" for me are Weezer [this is their last chance, in my book, but the demos sound bomb], Thrice [their debut promised so much], Get Up Kids [let's see if they can make a "comeback"], The Promise Ring [let's see if they can make a comeback!], Thursday, and a slew more.

Okay, so those were my choices, hastily decided to appease the masses. Tell me how much I or the bands I like suck below.

  • People who liked this also liked:

      1. Rx Bandits - Progress I don't care how much you hate drive thru records, you cannot deny this band's talent.

      2. System of a Down - Toxicity I usually hate this kind of music, but the vocals (Serj's and that other guy's) are mind-blowing.

ok first of all, i hate tool. they suck. and system of a down. but everyone has a right to their own opinion. and i hate how everyone is starting to listen to bands like dashboard confessional and saves the day. there's all these little preps who are in love with the music that is in their cd player right beside their britney spears cds. it's so stupid. anyway, here's some of my favorites.

thursday - full collapse: i love the guy's voice. i don't usually like hardcore oriented kind of stuff but this is good.

jimmy eat world - bleed american: i don't like "the middle" because there was just too much hype around it... but all the rest is good.

dashboard confessional - i love chris carrabba. this is a cd i can listen to a billion times and never get tired of, especially "screaming infidelities"

the get up kids - eudora: i just love the get up kids and all their music. i never get tired of it

the juliana theory - emotion is dead

saves the day - stay what you are: every song has some hidden meaning which is amazing and i think that they are awesome writers. their songs are so good.

the strokes - is this it: i don't care if this isn't punk, the cd is amazing and by far my favorite of the year. i can listen to it over and over again and still not get tired of it. "hard to explain" is awesome.

How come no one put Rocket From the Crypt's Group Sounds album on their list.It came out in 2001, and if it didn't it would still wipe the floor with this year's top picks. The albums I am looking forward to already came out. The new Bad Religion and Face to Face albums have breathed new life into a punk scene that has become stagnant and overloaded with emo and pop-punk bands. Also check out the new Hot Snakes album later this summer.

BEFORE I LIST MY TOP TEN OF 2001 I'D LIKE TO SAY THAT THESE ARE MY PERSONAL SELECTIONS AND THAT I DON'T FEEL LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE'S LISTS ARE WRONG,EVERY ONE IS ENTITLED TO THERE PICKS AND I RESPECT EVERYONES PICKS. SO HERE WE GO:
      10)System Of A Down - Toxicity
      9)Sum 41 - All Killer, No Filler
      8)Slipknot - Iowa
      7)Megadeth - The World Needs A Hero
      6)Judas Priest - Demolition
      5)Drowning Pool - Sinner
      4)Osker - Idle Will Kill
3)Slayer - God Hates Us All
2)Bruce Dickinson - The Best Of
      1)Blaze - Silicon Messiah

I KNOW THAT THIS IS A PUNK SITE AND THAT A MAJORITY OF MY PICKS ARE METAL BUT I DO LOVE PUNK JUST AS MUCH AS I LOVE METAL, BUT I WAS JUST PULLING THESE ALBUMS OUT OF THE TOP OF MY HEAD. IF I TOOK MY TIME I'D PROBABLY MAKE A MUCH MORE PUNK LIST. BUT FOR NOW I LIKE THIS LIST. AND FOR ANY OF YOU METALHEADS OUT THERE I WANT YOU TO KEEP A SERIOUS EYE OUT FOR AN AWESOME METAL BAND CALLED "SWORDS OF SCORN" THEY ARE A WICKED MIXTURE OF OLD SCHOOL METAL, NEW SCHOOL METAL, AND POP PUNK. REALLY FUN YOUNG GUYS. CHECK 'EM OUT WHEN THEY FINALLY HIT THE NET AND STORES.

      My Score:

Well...I looked at a lot of people's thoughts, and I noticed at lot of EMO. Whining crying emo. BLAH...emo sucks. I also noticed that I saw about two halfway decent lists and none that were good. However, I did find the Sum 41 Hardcore comment quite funny. Here's my Top 10

1: Undecided-More to See (One of the best cds I've ever heard. If anyone likes fast melodic punk, check this out...seriously it's so good)

2: Bigwig-An Invitation to Tragedy (A little closer to hardcore than Sum 41...hahaha This cd is amazing. This is the most talented punk band out there. Period. I saw them live and I was amazed.)

3: No use for a Name-Live in a Dive (great cd...they sound so much better when they speed things up)

4: Hangnail-Facing Changes (Another very talented band...a little bit slower, but still an amazing cd...not even close to as good as their self titled cd though...)

5: Pulley-Together Again for the First Time (a bit of a disappointment at first, but it grew on me. Quick.)

6: Good Riddance-Symptoms of a Leveling Spirit (their best work yet...it sounds great)

7: Deviates-Time is the Distance (the lyrics are simply awesome)

8: Zero Down-With a Lifetime to Pay (the worst thing that happened to Strung Out in the last two years is that they kicked Jim out. He really showed Strung Out how important he was with this performance. I predict the new Strung Out to be shit, simply because Jim is in Zero Down now, which is exactly why this cd is so good)

9: Useless ID-Bad Story, Happy Ending (Great cd...I've been awaiting a full length cd that I can ACTUALLY FIND ever since I got to the 80th track a few days after short music for short people came out)

10:Fat Wreck Volume 5-Live fat, Die Young (what more can you want than a bunch of unreleased songs by great bands like Lagwagon, No use for a Name, Strung Out, Zero Down, The Mad Caddies, and just about every other band on fat)

      Biggest disappointments:

The Fairlanes-Welcome to Nowhere (after obsessing over "Songs for Cruising" for a long ass time, I was so happy to hear that The Fairlanes had a new cd coming out...what a fucking disappointment)

BAD ASTRONAUT-I don't fucking care what the name of the cd is (what the fuck was this shit! Lagwagon is one of my favorite bands, and to hear that Joey Cape was making a new cd, I was checking their site for months waiting to see anything on it. When it finally came out, you would not believe how angry I was)

The Ataris-End is Forever (While I still somewhat like this cd, Blue Skies... and Anywhere but Here are so much better...I expected greatness, and I didn't get it)

Craig's Brother-Lost at Sea (I TRIED AND TRIED AND TRIED to like this cd, because Homecoming is one of the best cds I've ever heard. Sometimes, when I'm in the mood I can somewhat get into it, but for the most part...no)

      Most anticipated releases of 2002

im one for giving thursdays accalades for "full collapse", but does anyone remember thier release on eyeball records,"waiting." That record was extremely sub-par. Lyrically and musically. While the sound was taking the hardcore genre in a new direction, it did it very slowly. Noone was applauding "waiting" and some people dont even seem to know it exists. I've read counts of reviews all over the web and noone seems to bring up "waiting" at all. Not even to note how much thursday has matured over a years time. Some reviews have gone as far to say that "full collapse" is thier "debut" album. It seems a few more people should do thier homework. Since im self-absorbed i'll put in my own two cents on top 10 of the year.
      10.THE ICARUS LINE-MONO

Where the hell did any of your taste come from? Good Charlotte is a band for 12 year old teenyboppers. The whole band is a bunch of creeps- the twin with the mohawk tried to get into my pants at Warped this summer. Rufio is the most generic pop-punk band I have ever heard. Even my 14-year old cousin said- wow this sounds exactly like NFG/Blink. Get some originality. And the Weezer cd was definately overrated- it puts me to sleep now.Thursday too- I don't see what all the hype is about. Feel free to argue back at me. Oh and the Fenix CD definately came out in 2001 ,thanks dumbasses. I have it in my hand and am looking at the copyrite date.

1)Thrice - The Illusion Of Safety (If you liked the first CD, this is 10x better. It's fucking insane.)

2)Unwritten Law - Elva (There's some wierd experimental stuff on here, but the heavier shit is definitely an A )

3)Bad Religion - The Process of Belief
      (No explanation needed)

4)Travoltas - Step On The Gas And Dont Look Back (New B-Sides CD out in April. If you havent heard Travoltas yet, you are REALLY missing out.)

5)New Face to Face record. (Heard a few demo tracks over the phone, and this simply put will be the best F2F CD in years.

How can TimBomb say that Dropkick Murphys and DMX released shitty albums? Dropkick Murphys was probably one of the ebst albums ive heard since the gangs all here. They have never released anything but great music and that didnt stop this year. Best back ever. DMX album was not the greatest thing ive ever heard but it is probably one of the most raw and hard rap albums of the year. I dispise rap in just about every shape and form but DMX is one I enjoy because he is a real bad ass guy plus he raps about things that mean something to him and not about money and "ho's". The rap world needs more people like DMX and TuPac and less people like Puff Daddy (oh i mean P Diddy) and Jay Z and shit like that. Fuck you all for the comments Im going to get on liking DMX.

      1) Nerve Agents are on Hell Cat...hel catis distibuted by Epitaph... Henceforth it is not produced nor is the band signed by Epitaph Records

      2) Alkaline Trio's new album is embarassing. It's definitely a pathetic Record no matter what label its on
      3) As for T(I)NC I admit to being Caught.. It's unfortunate Dennis is trapped into his Deal with Epitaph due to their major label tactics in signing Bands like his former project the Refused (And even they are bound By Way of the now bought out subsidiary Burning Heart) for their Full lengths. Notice that all the bands EPs have in fact been release on other labels of their choosing(the 1st Conspiracy is not a full length, it's a ompilation of single tracks before you try to bust me on a technicality there too killer. But yes their full length contract, hence including A New Morning is with Epitaph records. Pat yourself on the back.

As for the inependent labels remark - I owe no allegiance to any label major/independent. Notice I call Cave In the best band on Earth, theyre on RCA ace.

I Sold out the scene or something.

Bloody bastards at this site. You talk about getting pissed off because something is not "punk". Yes, I know that this is punknews.org, and that you all have very different ideals on what "punk" is and means these days. And that's pretty rockin' if you ask me, to have all those different opinions. But for you fucks that are too concerned with "punk" that you don't listen to anything else - how in the world can you even THINK about criticizing someone who listens and likes something that is not "punk"? You "punker-than-thou" kids are doing exactly the same thing as the pop-Mtv crowd: you're putting kids down because they are different. It's stupid and pointless and just makes you look like an immature wanker that doesn't even have a strong nor pure enough passion for music to respect other people's choice, or to like DIFFERENT things. Hell, I LOVE Frank Sinatra. I LOVE Ryan Adams. Yet, at the same time, I LOVE The Dead Kennedys. Get a fuckin life.

      My Score:

its pretty lame of people to bitch about top 10 lists that have bands in it that arent "punk." if you only have punk bands in your top 10, then you really need to broaden your horizons...anyway, here are some great albums from 2k1 (no order):

      tool - "lateralus"
-this album is a fucking masterpiece. they are some of the most talented and original musicians around...

      rx bandits - "progress"
-this is a real gem, it takes some great strides for ska in general, and is really a diverse and eclectic record. it works so well as a whole.

rocket from the crypt - "group sounds"
-their last album was a huge disappointment, so i was expecting this one to suck, but it is fucking great. best rock album of the year, hands down.

sigur ros - "icelandic shit i cant spell"
-i guess it wasnt "released" this year, but wow, i just got it and it knocked me on my ass because of how lofty and smooth it is. way better than bjork.

jimmy eat world - "bleed american"
-so its no clarity, but this really is way better than a lot of the shit being released these days. they totally prove how they can do things on their own terms and still write amazing songs.

      new order - "get ready"
-this is the shizzle of my nizzle. its hard to believe this is the same band that gave us "blue monday" back in the 80's (before orgy killed it).

      radiohead - "amnesiac"
-pales in comparison to kid a, but still a great album. the songs dont flow with one another, but each individual song is truly great.

      t(i)nc - "a new morning"
-these guys are awesome. this album has a fuller sound than survival sickness, and it incorporates some more experimentation. great message with an even greater musical backing. some intelligent motherfuckers.

beta band - "hot shots ii"
-another one of those albums that works so well in its entirety. draws you in from the first note and doesnt let you go til its over.

pinehurst kids - "bleed it dry"
-how come nobody knows these guys (or maybe it just seems that way)? they are one of the best "emo" bands you never heard. get this shit now.

      the faint - "danse macabre"
-this band went in a time machine back to 1983, and then came back and kicked everyones ass. vampires, sex, death...what more could you want? and "glass danse" is the best dance song ever. period.

the strokes - "is this it"
-im probably going to get castrated for putting them on my list, but these guys really are that good. they live up to the hype, i dont care what anyone says.

hot water music - "a flight and a crash"
-fucking good shit. if you dont know this album, then kiss my arse.

hope you like da list, werd.

I'm just listing what I got this past year, and I'm not saying it's all mind bending original stuff, but some of it is rather good. To the guy who put a play on words on most of the albums I like, that was very humorus.

      In no particular order:

The Ataris: End is Forever- Good ol' pop-punk, infasis on pop, you can listen to with your girlfriend.

Saves The Day: Stay What You Are- What can I say. You loved it. You hated it. It's been soddered into my CD player since I just got it a couple weeks ago.

The Bouncing Souls: HISMSV- The Souls at their best. Yelling Oi, Oi, Oi gets better every time.

Incubus: Morning View- One of the best and somewhat original bands (experimentation folks) left in mainstream radio rock.

The Movielife...Has A Gambling Problem EP- I bought it without hearing any of it except Walking On Glass, and while its not completely terrible, it's been hard to put it in my CD player.

Rival Schools: United By Fate- I like to say if The Beatles had a hardcore background, this is what they would sound like. AWESOME

MxPx: Renassaince EP- Interesting mix of old school and newer Magnified Plaid.

      I'm looking forward to:

      Flogging Molly: Drunken Lullabys
      The Arsons: Whole Life Crisis
      The Stryder: TBA
I was looking forward to the new Movielife full length, but after the new EP, I'm not so sure.

i only saw one person who put Osker - Idle Will Kill on their list! I thought that this was by far the best album of 2001, if not of all time. Everyone should check it out, it really is pure genius.

Here's my 10 cents about music this year.
Vagrant/Epitaph/Fat really proved they are completely incapable of putting out a single decent record. it really needs to be pointed out how bad they are blowing it.
The Nerve Agents were the first band in years to actually gives some slight sign that "punkrock" might not be quite dead.
The International Noise Conspiracy finally stopped sucking.
Cave In the Best Band in the World.
Converge/American Nightmare/Bane/THC/The Dedication/Panic/Cave In/Piebald , all bands from Boston officially proved it has in fact become the last stronghold for Hardcore bands (With Virginia occasionally showing signs of life named Time Flies/Striking Distance/Strike Anywhere/Count Me Out/ Project 208, impressive too.
Jimmy Eat World Sold their souls to the devil for a hit record and its still not a hit so far.
Integrity is finally giving up the charade theyve put on since realizing they'll never release another hmanity is the devil.
      Best Records?
Breathe In - From THis Day On
      American Nightmare - Background Music
      Radiohead - Amnesiac
      T(I)NC - New Morning
      Bane- Give Blood
      Nerve Agents - Butterfly Collection
Ink and Dagger - Self Titled
Cave In - Jupiter (2000, but its the best thing ever released so it stays)
      Ryan Adams - GOLD
The Assistant- Self Titled (Ex You and I, look into it)

Honorable Mention -Shark Attack - for the quickest burnout ever but the most refreshing blast of hardcore New End Original- for being Emo and not sucking, The WHite Octave for doing cool stuff, The Icarus Line for putting on a great Live Show, Gideon Yago - For not Making MTV News suck

People that Blew It - For Releasing Shitty Records - Blink182, Grade, Hot Water Music, Alkaline Trio, Weezer, Hey Mercedes, Saves the Day, Dropkick Murphys, Leftover Crack, Beta Band, DMX, Death Cab For Cutie, The Faint,River City High, The Hoods, Kil Your Idols, Good Riddance.

      I talk too much.

To the guy that was talking about "Saves The Day," and "Thursday" being crap about 7 post down from here. I know its all opinion but the lyrics of "Stay What You Are" are some of the most amazing lyrics ever written. And then "Thursday." Out of all the bands you could have put at the top of your "Biggest Dissapointments" you put Thursday. I really think you need to listen more to them because it actually took me about 3 listens to really enjoy "Thursday." They have some very strong lyrics. -Rock

I gotta agree with the guy that posted the rant about Fat Wreck/Vagrant... although he could've been a little nicer about it. It is kind of funny to look at everyone's list and see the same bands over and over, and they're all from the "major independent" labels like Fat Wreck, epitaph, vagrant, etc... I like a lot of the stuff those labels put out too, but I also like to explore more labels and more bands...
if you want to hear some good music, go get the Degenerics - Generica. It is probably the best album to come out in almost 10 years, i shit you not. An absolutely amazing album. It may not be available at Interpunk, and they probably will never play the warped tour, but they are 1000 times better than any band on Epitaph. Or get Pleasure Forever - self titled album. Or get the new Sunshine record. Or the best band ever, the Cure. Or Heart of Snow. Or get the Joy Division box set (i think that was just released in the US this year). Or get the new Planes Mistaken For Stars - Fuck with Fire. Or get The Icarus Line - Mono.

Seriously, if you have Alkaline Trio, Pennywise, Rx Bandits, Rise Against or Fenix TX on your list, you obviously need to broaden your playlist. There is so much great music that you're missing for this bland repetitive crap. Yes, it is a matter of opinion, but it's hard to have a good opinion when half of your record collection came from Fat Wreck Chords.

to the guy 5 posts down:
Mates of State didn't come out with an album this year, "My Solo Project" came out last year [I should know, I named it my number one album of 2000]. Their new album drops on Polyvinyl Janurary 22nd, I believe. That also should've been on my "most anticipated" list, the Mates fucking rule.
