So for the past month and a half I've been listening to my CDs alphabetically. It's as much of a purge as it is a chance to become reacquainted with some gems that I haven't played in awhile.

"One Step Ahead of the Spider" fortunately falls in the second of these categories. It's hard for me to believe it's been nearly eight years since I first heard the hip-hop style beats of the self-deprecating "If I Only Had a Brain" one late night on MTV. The music on this disc sounds as fresh and creative in 2002 as it did in 1994.

So what does MC 900 FT Jesus sound like? Well, there's a little element of rap, but most of the album's 10 tracks are stories told in a spoken-word fashion with jazzy backgrounds. This was like nothing my 14 year old ears had ever heard.

Basically the easiest way to summarize this album would be to call it tales of schizophrenia with a jazz and hip hop overture.

Wow, I'm surprised this is on here. Born With Monkey Asses is my anthem.

I have always had a love for MC 900.

You can't bump good talent and this is as close to the best as one can come.

But NFG isn't punk. Then why don't they say this isn't punk? Well, because it is fucking obvious. If you are called MC anything, then you are a rapper. Rap is rap. Punk is rock. See the difference? That being said, I don't care much for this, but I like lots of rap. Nobody beats the Biz...

    hey Jimi, its CG

Secondly, Im not complaining that people bitch about NFG or whatever, its not like I gave them a glowing review or anything. Im not so much complaining as I am just pointing out that these jarheads bitch about NFG being "not punk", but then they leave this alone. I am all for diversity like I said. No bitching from me man. Its just funny how stupid people are.

hey gc, those bands you mentioned suck....hard

that's why people jump all over your shit...

a rapper can be punk, just because of his ethics...or maybe indy just because he or the group in question is considered underground...

I know i'd much rather read a review of MC Paul Barman or Del the Funky Homosapian than some shit ass review of the new New Found Glory or Bif Naked record....

unlike those crappy bands, many rappers have talent...

So call it a fringe benefit....

Dude, jheisel's not on staff. He's just my mooch of a brother, riding my coattails.

    Or something.

Anyways, this review was approved and posted by Aubin. Take up your beefs with him.

The reviewer is on the staff bro, he can post whatever he damn well pleases.

I have nothing against rap, and for all I know MC Jesus might be very talented. But isnt this website about punk rock? So my little half star is for the reviewer. You're in the wrong damn place, Bucky.

this isn't punk, but what a fuckin great album. it's genius if ya ask me.

    Anonymous (January 23, 2002)

Ok so like how does this logic work-
I write reviews of bands like Bif Naked, The Bloodhound Gang, Handsome Devil, New Found Glory, etc. People, as expected, jump all over it, tell me I suck, etc. You review an album by an obscure rap artist, and only one person bitches. Now, I have no problem with this review at all, I am all for musical diversity. Its just funny that the meat heads that get on my case every time I do a review left this completely alone. Odd.

    wtf?

i know we're all for expanding boundaries here, but isn't this site still called punknews.org?

how the fuck does this fit in?

    jheisel (January 21, 2002)

haha, this is what happens when i try to write record reviews in stone cold sobriety. this review sucked and i rated it too high. if the review were to be deleted, i would not mind. but all you kids should still check this record out.
