Review by: Kurt_F See others by this writer The Juliana Theory (link) Only registered users can post comments Published on January 21st 2002 Ok. A lot of people hate The Juliana Theory, whether it be because "the are really poppy" or "they are a bunch of emo-fags" or maybe it's that over exaggerated rumor that their "wannabe rockstar singer wears a headset" or maybe it's just because of a certain website (rhymes with "duddyshed") that people allow to control their opinions and thwart their somewhat open minds. Well I'll just say that they are sorta poppy sometimes, they aren't emo nor gay, their singer wears an EARPIECE MONITOR because of his hearing and as for that "certain website", they don't really like anybody besides Radiohead and Cave-In anyways. So yea, here I go to review this cd, please keep an open mind.

"Some might even consider “Understand This is But a Dream” to be the beginning of Emo itself." This is a crappy review.. Its clear that this dude dont know shit about emo. This band is a mediocre "alternative rock band," and thats fuckin it Surely the first 'emo' band was 'Rites Of Spring'?!!! As I begin this review, I’m frightened by the very thought of how many times I’ve been asked to actually define the genre of ‘Emo”. In the immortal words of one of Emo’s true pirate innovators, Brandon Boyd (Incubus), “If I had a dime every time, I’d be rich by noon today”. Ah yes, that is but a dream, and so is The Juliana Theory’s 1999 debut effort off of Tooth and Nail Records, “Understand This Is But a Dream”. As excited as I am to getting into the swirling and long argued definition of Emo, I feel its necessary to tell J.T.’s (Juliana Theory’s) story, for they created THE EMO ALBUM EXTRADONAIRE. Some might even consider “Understand This is But a Dream” to be the beginning of Emo itself. Uhhh...who the hell cares. I don't give a rat's ass about who's christian and who's not. That's not why I listen to Juliana Theory. I just like them. So? I don't give a fuck if you don't. I do. That's all that matters. Get a life and take all of your bullshit somewhere else, Christians and athiests alike. This is a punk review site, not a fucking religious debate message board. if you don't like "emo-poppy" music then why would you buy/review a julianna theory cd. get your head out of your ass. First of all I can't stand this emo poppy sound second of all there's nothing wrong with wearing a headset besides being stylish the allow the singer the use of both arms with out missing a note, so don't hold the headset against them hold the poppy emo against them. It's a shame that it took the Juliana Theory to bring this conversation up. I guarantee everybody would have been complaining about the band instead had this review been for their second album. Pure suck. Predictions are easy to point out after the fact, but show me an actual concrete prediction in the bible and then if it comes true i'll believe. Until then, as the last guy put it, leprechauns it is. If anyone can come up with a concrete definition of what god really is then I'll believe in it. Until then I'm just going to believe in magic leprechauns and pray to joe pesci.... I believe in swordfish. You didn't have to tell us that. "If you believe something, that doesnt make you right". Um, duh. ya know, i don't consider myself a christian. I do, however, consider myself a spiritual person. Either way, I think it's single-minded of EVERYONE to say that someone else is wrong. Who's to say that God or Satan exists? I know I certainly can't. I've thought long and hard about it and I simply cannot base my beliefs on a book written by man (who is fallable in the Christian faith). Nor can I accept that there is NO God or Satan. Show me the proof of that. Saying that there is no proof that God exists does not DISPROVE God. I believe that there is a God or higher power. I cannot prove it. I haven't found a religion that truly fits my beliefs, either, I am still looking. If you believe there is nothing beyond our material world, so be it. That doesn't make you right. If you believe in the Christian faith or (like me) that there is at least some higher power, so be it. That doesn't make you (or me) right. You have a point about assuming that you have to believe Satan exists first. Well he does, and what I qouted was true. But I'm not going to go into the other reasons that support Christianity right now, I don't want to type out. But I will say that there are verses that address everything you guys have said below. I suggest maybe reading the Bible before making your decision. If you don't want to read the whole thing, then just read Matthew, Isaiah, John, Romans, and maybe Thessolonians. Make sure it's not a king james version too, too many wierd puncuations and what not. And if that doesnt convince you...... Ok, it's hard for me to keep an open mind when reading stuff about this band. My friends kept telling me that they were so incredible. The CD that I kept seeing on websites was Emotion is Dead (because it had just been released at the site). I bought Emotion is Dead and I couldn't stand it. They have a song where they sing a capella with finger snaps for a good amount of time and it made me want to puke (I do like emo-pop-punk bands, or whatever, but I just couldn't get into it at all). Instead of throwing the CD out like I was intending on doing, I traded it in, but I can't really listen to people talk about them anymore. Is this CD any better at all? u guys are silly. this is a good album from a good band. good home and whine to ur girlfriends if u want to wine. and do u want some cheese with ur wine? I seriously doubt that the people who wrote the reviews for the atheism book actually read it. Also, I'm pretty sure that christians have some contempt for athiests. While that doesn't excuse atheists from being contemptful (is that a word?) it also isn't a good excuse to be contemptful yourself. Yes the odds for a cell forming are very small indeed but with gazillions of worlds and billons of years the probability that it would happen is very big indeed. To illustrate how stupid of a statement you just made further, it is almostr impossible to win the lottery but people do it every day. When time isn't an issue most probabilities become very probable. Think next time. Read a fucking book. what the hell is screamo? I think if I could go back in history, and stop one person from being born, it would be Brett detar. Of course by saying that athiests are unknowingly worshipping satan, you're assuming that satan exists. I'm not gonna pretend to know whether or not satan exists. But to use that argument against people that don't believe in god, or the teachings of your bible is useless. Just because you use a quote, and say "I rest my case", doesn't make you right. It means you have an opinion. It isn't based on fact. Human kind has a need to explain things. Since there really is no explanation for life, they created gods and religions. They wrote things like the bible to enforce their beliefs (After all, if its in a book, it must be true) Once again, I stress, The Juliana Theory are NOT emo. As for the person who hates Christianity because it was "pressed" up her: Don't blame an entire religion for what a handful of people who claim to be Christian did to you. Being a Christian doesn't make you perfect. Man cannot be perfect. There are a lot of "corrupt" Christians out there, as there are with any other religion, people making their religion look bad by taking thier views to extremes (bin Laden, abortion clinic bombers, Jerry Fallwel-the guy who blamed homosexuals and abortionists for 9-11, saying they made God mad) Just remember that odds are, one person or group does not represent a whole belief. I am sorry to bust everyones bubble but The Juliana Theory is not a christian band go read the website! It does not matter though most of you are just using it as an excuse to bitch about them cuz it is something new and is not punk to the core! "Ever heard the phrase: "if it sounds good... it is good" ??" Nazi Germany had nothing to do with music. okay, this is a good album. In my opinion the juliana theory is emo. But there are alot of styles of music in this cd. So they're not just one type. Ever heard the phrase: "if it sounds good... it is good" ?? That was said by Duke Ellington. So open your minds.. i'm not telling anyone to like them, but for fucks sake, open your minds i haven't heard the album, but i saw them at warped tour and they tried so hard to rock out it was just silly. by the way, all you kiddies using the term "screamo" really need to get a life and quit making up bullshit names for every little nuance in punk music sounds....it gives me a head ache. laters.... To add to the endless whining: "you are just jealous that you are poor white trash." Oh man. All of this is just as I predicted. Anywhere you mention the words "The Juliana Theory", the morons will sift themselves out with ignorant remarks. I thought by maybe saying that I was anticipaing idiotic comments, that it would prevent some, but I took the readers of this website forgranted. Some of the things people have posted over the last 2 years on this website have made me want to laugh, cry, and vomit all at the same time. GEEZ. I'm sure some of you will agree with me. I honestly can't believe that there are people in the world as stupid as some of you. Where is my uzi..... to the guy that is a few posts down: You know, when I said they were a wussy Christian emo band...I was pretty much just trying to be funny. I was being honest about not being able to get into this band, but being wussy doesn't bother me. I mean Jeez, I like Further Seems Forever and Sense Field....the epitome of pussy music. I have to laugh at how people on here judge music by how wussy it is. LOL....if that's how it works ...we might as well just have the bands duke it out. This whole board is stupid and anyone here who bithces about any bands really does not have a open mind or a appreciation for music. I know I know.......you punkers can't say you like TJT cuz that would make you soft or poser (lol). It's just fuckin' lame, who needs a categories and labels....just respect the music and the artists. say your in a local band for instance, im sure you love to ripp on the latest sellouts......but you know what, they have accomplished a hell of allot more than your band has. They spent allot of hard work and time to get to that level. I'm nto asking you to like these bands, im just saying as a artist you should respect all art. Ok.... I am not sharing my personal opinion on the album or the band. Everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and that's fine by me. I am just responding to a statement made earlier in this thread. Someone said they saw them open for The Get Up Kids about a year ago and nobody was really in to them. That is false. TJT is without a doubt the biggest local draw in Pittsburgh. Their headliner shows usually sell out at club laga which is 1000 . Just addressing a factual error. Nothing to do with if the band is "good" or not. Fucking amazing!!! I got to admit that I like their newer stuff much better, but this album is incredible. All these tight assas bitch because they are supposedly a "christian band", maybe they should listen to the music to decide whether they like them instead of bashing them because two of the members are christian. Most people don't like the Juliana Theory, and with good reason. Every CD after this blows and at shows Bret Deter acts like a total tool. Their new CD is anti-rock, and never, ever see them without turning your back. I'm from Pittsburgh, and I love the scene and this CD is pretty good, but don't bother with their other stuff. If those stars could go negative, they would. I dunno why these whiny little rich kids piss me off so much. I think its the fact that they're whiny little rich kids. Come on. Whining about girls is so last year. And Being christian sucks. The plus sign no showed yes there is. Here is the equation: There is no way any part of the juliana theory is screamo. Jimi- Fair enough. Perhaps you should try Emotion Is Dead though, a lot of people seem to like that cd better anyway. They like, mix it up and stuff. Download To the Tune of 5,000 Screaming Children, Is Patience Still Waiting, If I Told You This Was Killing Me Would You Stop (make sure it's the emotion is dead version, the split cd version SUCKS), and maybe This Is The End Of Your Life from the new EP. Just a suggestion. Jimi- Fair enough. Perhaps you should try Emotion Is Dead though, a lot of people seem to like that cd better anyway. They like, mix it up and stuff. Download To the Tune of 5,000 Screaming Children, Is Patience Still Waiting, If I Told You This Was Killing Me Would You Stop, and maybe This Is The End Of Your Life from the new EP. Just a suggestion. the exact opposite of rock n roll kurt, i wasn't just talking about you using the "emo" tag with this band.... everyone seems to do it...well, i guess that tag gets thrown on ANY band nowadays... Yea, I forgot to say that I heard Emotion Is Dead first, then I got this cd. I thought it was bland at first, but it really grew on me. Hot tuna. Ha, I was right. A bunch of mindless idiotic postings. If you atually read the review, I said they weren't emo. Nor did I say they were screamo. I said there was a screamo part in a song. sorry, that score was supposed to be a one i saw them live opening for Get Up Kids last year in Pittsburgh. They were terrible. There were maybe 5 people actually getting into it, everyone else was just kinda standing there. I almost felt sorry for them. I bought this album 2 months ago, because i had a lot of money i guess and people told me it was good. Boy was I in for a suprize.. no, i think buddyhead just likes bands that are good....they like plenty of bands...if you ever read the website you'd know that... they like outkast. andhotwatermusic i believe and kid dynamite. i'm cool. that certain website also likes the icarus line. I do believe those are the only 3 bands it likes. the Juliana Theory are worse than boy bands... PITTSBURGH! Well atleast Greensburg. I just finished downloading this CD today, I enjoy it... I own this album [although I got it for free, so that's saying something]. It, to me, is everything that is wrong with "emo" music. It's the Spinal Tap of emo. That being said, it still is catchy as all fuck. But come on, the lyrics are *so* trite and 8th grade poetry class, and the music is bland at best. Their new EP is pretty interesting, though, this band definitely has evolved. I like the Juliana Theory. Really. They are in now way "screamo." Do a little research. They don't even incorporate any elements of screamo. Try The Locust or From Autumn To Ashes. Not The Juliana Theory. Never could really get into this band. Christian emo (Im assuming they have some tie to Christianity, being on Tooth and Nail, but I could be very wrong), I dont think it gets much wussier:) I dunno why, but this band just doesnt really do it for me. |
