As I begin this review, I’m frightened by the very thought of how many times I’ve been asked to actually define the genre of ‘Emo”. In the immortal words of one of Emo’s true pirate innovators, Brandon Boyd (Incubus), “If I had a dime every time, I’d be rich by noon today”. Ah yes, that is but a dream, and so is The Juliana Theory’s 1999 debut effort off of Tooth and Nail Records, “Understand This Is But a Dream”. As excited as I am to getting into the swirling and long argued definition of Emo, I feel its necessary to tell J.T.’s (Juliana Theory’s) story, for they created THE EMO ALBUM EXTRADONAIRE. Some might even consider “Understand This is But a Dream” to be the beginning of Emo itself.

It was just another day at the mom and mop CD store I was managing at the time (Sound Source). Just recently I had befriended the local Christian rock venue God’s Place International; you wouldn’t believe the talent the Christian market had been hiding. Previous to this relationship, I had started up a distribution and marketing crossfire with Seattle, Washington based Tooth and Nail Records. A few weeks into my campaigning with the customers, I received my first care package from the company. In this care package was a plethora of different promo’s, t-shirts, gadgets, gizmos, and stickers. It wasn’t until I found the blue contemporary looking JT (Juliana Theory) cover with its press release that the unique story of this indie band started to unfold.

Hailing from Pennsylvania, Brett Detar (lead vocals) was formerly known throughout the industry for his guitar work with Zao, a highly respected Christian Hardcore/Metal act. After his departure from the band, he formed his own group back home. Over the first few months, the material piled up, as did the storyline. Still without a name, Brett heard of this group of scientists in the radius of his area known only as the Juliana Group. The Juliana Group was in search of their proof for a hypothesis. As a result of their studies, they found the only way to prove their hypothesis was through the waves of music. The way it was explained to me? It’s your job as the listener, and reviewer of this record to take this record home and come up with the all-important answer to what is “The Juliana Theory”.

Starting slow, trickling back and forth are the introductive chords readying you for these four cheeses of punk rock. Then suddenly the lead vocals seep through, and a bouncy, up-tempo, one chord method pulls your brain sideways. Leave room for the chorus 'cause “This is not a love song”. This track bolsters the sound of the entire album, ending in a fashion most of us can sing along to during its first listening. “Doot Doo Doo Doo, Doot Doo Doo Doot Doo Doo.” Track two is for me, the beginning of Emo, as I know it. While many artists before these guys had performed it, and subconsciously I was feeling it, when this album crossed my fingertips for the first time I knew I was experiencing something different. Melodies meshing emotions, in swirls that seemed to be bending time back and forth.

You see nowadays Emo is about a depressed 14 year old who is angry because his or her parents want to be closer with them (perhaps that’s an unfair stereotype, please strike that from the record). The music has taken on a life of its own. Swimming out past the dock life of music into a lifestyle of co-eds wearing bad eye shadow and self-empathy. The original Emo scheme is a bit more clearly with the listening pleasure of track two, “Duane Joseph”. Although lyrically it's a simple boyhood story of fun and growing up, musically the inclination of emotions is running wild on musical instruments. Slowly it starts. “Tell your Mom you need a day off, So we can play out in the rain, We'll catch a ride to the mall, Go down to the arcade, Cause that's where all the cool kids play.” That’s when suddenly an unexpected explosion takes over the strings and drumsticks. Blend in the chorus, and play it upwardly towards the bridge only to stutter stop one more time for another verse. Is the picture sinking in just yet?

Track three “August in Bethany” is a love ballad with all the trimmings of emotional instrumental build up. Slowly the lyrics blend in with the saddening guitar intro. As the song progresses, the vocal contributions show pains taken experience. “Don’t go, you said you wouldn’t, don’t go, you said you couldn’t.” Just as you’re ready to skip forward to the next track and label this as a dramatic ballad, these boys switch gears, and the lungs of Brett take focus. Screaming repeatedly, “DON’T GO! YOU SAY AS I WALK OUT! YOUR DOOR.” Don’t fear for the character involved, this song ends in somber serenity.

Track four is my consideration for the goofy intro allowance. For good reason, as this becomes an acceptable brain fart as the goofy, simple-minded intro turns into a confident melody-driven synchronization from there on in. “This life in my box lets you turn the key when you want to hear, A melody but I can never be the apple of your eye, the story of your life it's what's inside, Why I go through stages.” The instrument and vocal combination separate and combine numerous times on this track, only to come back together for the finale of the song, ending in the most distinct of chords on this album.
Track five, “Seven Forty Seven,” once again like its created cousins, won't win any technical awards, but has an amazing atmospheric "get up and bounce" stutter stop feel. I suppose it’s me who should finally hint out to all the men the new Barry White like power song of our often moving generation is track six, “The Closet Thing”. This serious piece of songwriting will surely get any man, short of the sensitivity of a male wrestler in good with his spouse or girlfriend. “You're the dream that hasn't ended, and I'm still anxious for rest. Your words they seem to hang above my head. You're the bud before the flower, Unfurls into full bloom. Captivating beauty, but it maybe all too soon. You're the song that writes a story, but leaves a lot to read. The closest thing to perfect, but the farthest thing from me.”

Track seven, “Show me the money,” easily defines the beginning of easy, yet whiny repetitive guitar-strumming Emo/Rock hell. Like the chorus of “Pray” without the verse from M.C. Hammer (should I drop the M.C? naaaaa). “I thought about what you said, and it’s not your maahneee (*Money*)!” These would be all the words you’ll need to prepare for such song writing. Thankfully, moving on and realizing the one blemish. “Show me the money” is merely that, a blemish. As “For Evangeline” is a beautiful compromise between the balance of simple chord progressions, and the vocals complimenting those tricks. Now as much I would love to keep praising, I must reiterate a serious disliking at this point for the repetitive nature of the lyrics. Funny how I never noticed it before, regardless, come back to me complaining when you realize the range of this pinched nose wine. “In One Night you gave me away to the angels.” Floating in and out, within the walls of high and low, like a child simply playing with the volume of his or her voice simply to grab the attention of its on-looking kindergarten teacher. “Now I am just a silhouette….”

“P.S. we’ll call you when we get there” being the song title to track nine is the biggest clue to the mystery of the hypothesis, and that’s my hypothesis. Though strong and terrifically poppy, it's only a prelude to the fireworks finale like track ten, aptly titled “Constellation”, which may leave you feeling like you’re in outer space once the CD comes to a halt. Up, down, left to right, and all around. This is etiquette, the convincing evidence and proof when asked that bothering, yet persistent question, “What is Emo anyways?”

Tiny taps, supported by finger movements involving metal strings, and a guitar pick strumming away like a closed matchbook at the pickups of a Mexican Stradivarius. Echoed feminine lyrics are flowing through my skull by a man of Robert Smith-like (the Cure) vocal stature. Something towards the effect of… “Sleep seems a dream away, and a year too late. The words that can’t be spoken, streamed off your face…” And so the emotion explodes, like the molecules of one human's flesh attacked by the fate of 400-mph winds. “AND I WANNA BE SELFISH! I WANNA BE SELFISH! I WANNA BE SELFISH. YOU’RE MY EVERYTHING!!!! …PLEASE DON’T FORGET MY NAME….”

Imagine a pendulum an 800-pound pendulum swaying back and forth in a category 4 hurricane. You dodge the pendulum as it persistently keeps coming for you. Backwards and forwards as you watch and feel the edge of the blade’s just shy of your neck and back up, only to feel the pendulum come running back quicker, harder, more accurate the next time. With more speed once again your eyes view the final swing. Only to wake up and realize it may have all just been a dream.

Just what is the lobbying of musical experience, rhythm, and brain waves? What is it that makes you’re mind familiarize itself with one song or another? What is it that allows your head to become emotionally attached loyal, and understanding of each and every hand, or body movement in succession with a musical instrument? Could it be you’re emotions? Painfully beautiful and understanding, secretions through the speakers of living, breathing, hurting, loving, learning, trusting, and feeling EMOtion.

Still to this day I do not know the basis of their hypothesis. But as I begin this review I’m simply frightened by the very thought of how many times I’ve been asked this very question.

ya know, i don't consider myself a christian. I do, however, consider myself a spiritual person. Either way, I think it's single-minded of EVERYONE to say that someone else is wrong. Who's to say that God or Satan exists? I know I certainly can't. I've thought long and hard about it and I simply cannot base my beliefs on a book written by man (who is fallable in the Christian faith). Nor can I accept that there is NO God or Satan. Show me the proof of that. Saying that there is no proof that God exists does not DISPROVE God. I believe that there is a God or higher power. I cannot prove it. I haven't found a religion that truly fits my beliefs, either, I am still looking. If you believe there is nothing beyond our material world, so be it. That doesn't make you right. If you believe in the Christian faith or (like me) that there is at least some higher power, so be it. That doesn't make you (or me) right.

You have a point about assuming that you have to believe Satan exists first. Well he does, and what I qouted was true. But I'm not going to go into the other reasons that support Christianity right now, I don't want to type out. But I will say that there are verses that address everything you guys have said below. I suggest maybe reading the Bible before making your decision. If you don't want to read the whole thing, then just read Matthew, Isaiah, John, Romans, and maybe Thessolonians. Make sure it's not a king james version too, too many wierd puncuations and what not. And if that doesnt convince you......

The fact that a lot of things that have happened recently and the past 50 years were predicted clear as day in the Bible.....not to mention the fact that science has proven the exsistence of Jesus, and has validated prophecies that were made and came true in early a.d., let me know if you want to know what.

And to he guy who didn't like Emotion Is Dead: A lot of people like EID, and hate this cd, but there is also the same amount of people who hate this cd and love EID. Just download some songs, like Duane Joseph and Seven Forty Seven and For Evangeline.

ps-the majority of Christans I know don't have contempt for athiests, they just feel bad for them, just like they feel bad for a person of another religion, or someone who acknowledges that God exists, "but oh well, I go to church when Dad says to, I'm not a fanatic", kinda like a "lukewarm" Christian. (In fact, God "spits out" the lukewarm) It's all the same, sin is sin, sin is equal. There is no such thing as a sin worse than another. Therefore an athiest is just another non-believer or sinner, except they aren't saved. But that still doesn't stop some "mean" Christians from saying stupid things to them. But anyways, I'm sure you guys don't care because you've already made up your minds, based off the little information you obviously have shown you know.(that wasn't an insult) Besides, what would your friends think if you became one of those pussy, lame Christian people? So not cool, bro.....

Ok, it's hard for me to keep an open mind when reading stuff about this band. My friends kept telling me that they were so incredible. The CD that I kept seeing on websites was Emotion is Dead (because it had just been released at the site). I bought Emotion is Dead and I couldn't stand it. They have a song where they sing a capella with finger snaps for a good amount of time and it made me want to puke (I do like emo-pop-punk bands, or whatever, but I just couldn't get into it at all). Instead of throwing the CD out like I was intending on doing, I traded it in, but I can't really listen to people talk about them anymore. Is this CD any better at all?

I seriously doubt that the people who wrote the reviews for the atheism book actually read it. Also, I'm pretty sure that christians have some contempt for athiests. While that doesn't excuse atheists from being contemptful (is that a word?) it also isn't a good excuse to be contemptful yourself. Yes the odds for a cell forming are very small indeed but with gazillions of worlds and billons of years the probability that it would happen is very big indeed. To illustrate how stupid of a statement you just made further, it is almostr impossible to win the lottery but people do it every day. When time isn't an issue most probabilities become very probable. Think next time. Read a fucking book.

Of course by saying that athiests are unknowingly worshipping satan, you're assuming that satan exists. I'm not gonna pretend to know whether or not satan exists. But to use that argument against people that don't believe in god, or the teachings of your bible is useless. Just because you use a quote, and say "I rest my case", doesn't make you right. It means you have an opinion. It isn't based on fact. Human kind has a need to explain things. Since there really is no explanation for life, they created gods and religions. They wrote things like the bible to enforce their beliefs (After all, if its in a book, it must be true)

I don't have any answers for the whole life thing. I don't know how we got here, or why things are how they are. I'm just gonna call screwed up cartoon logic, and say we're all drawn by a big giant hand. I'm not gonna spend my whole life following a religion that I often severely disagree with, simply because it offers easy answers.

Juliana theory blows. They blow so bad. I don't hate any band more than the juliana theory. Not because they may or may not be christian. Because their music makes me angry. Not in the cool pissed off way, but in the "The tape they waste on this shit could have been used so much better by another band. Same with the air they're wasting" kind of way. Okay thats it. If you understood anything I said there, good job. I'm sure I'll have some problems deciphering it tomorrow.

Once again, I stress, The Juliana Theory are NOT emo. As for the person who hates Christianity because it was "pressed" up her: Don't blame an entire religion for what a handful of people who claim to be Christian did to you. Being a Christian doesn't make you perfect. Man cannot be perfect. There are a lot of "corrupt" Christians out there, as there are with any other religion, people making their religion look bad by taking thier views to extremes (bin Laden, abortion clinic bombers, Jerry Fallwel-the guy who blamed homosexuals and abortionists for 9-11, saying they made God mad) Just remember that odds are, one person or group does not represent a whole belief.

As for the Atheism book, click on the link, then read some of the reviews listed under the book that support it as well as refute it, like this one: "As intellectually self-indulgent as atheism itself. Athiests contempt for Christ is unbelievable...well not really. They worship the one who is against Christ and don't even know it. Satan's first lie to us was that we could be like God (decide good/right from evil/wrong). Now as for the band, I was tired when I posted the earlier comment. Much too tired to back up my comment. The whiny little rich kid thing is still very true.I can't see these guys being from anywhere but the suburbs. But theres alot of bands that are whiny little rich kids. What seperates the Juliana theory is their generic emo stylings. I've heard all their songs a million times before, from other generic emo bands. Above All else, THATS why I don't like this band. And I thought people stopped calling each other homo in grade 9.

I thought by maybe saying that I was anticipaing idiotic comments, that it would prevent some, but I took the readers of this website forgranted. Ok.... I am not sharing my personal opinion on the album or the band. Everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and that's fine by me. I am just responding to a statement made earlier in this thread. Someone said they saw them open for The Get Up Kids about a year ago and nobody was really in to them. That is false. TJT is without a doubt the biggest local draw in Pittsburgh. Their headliner shows usually sell out at club laga which is 1000 . Just addressing a factual error. Nothing to do with if the band is "good" or not.

Most people don't like the Juliana Theory, and with good reason. Every CD after this blows and at shows Bret Deter acts like a total tool. Their new CD is anti-rock, and never, ever see them without turning your back. I'm from Pittsburgh, and I love the scene and this CD is pretty good, but don't bother with their other stuff.

Jimi- Fair enough. Perhaps you should try Emotion Is Dead though, a lot of people seem to like that cd better anyway. They like, mix it up and stuff. Download To the Tune of 5,000 Screaming Children, Is Patience Still Waiting, If I Told You This Was Killing Me Would You Stop (make sure it's the emotion is dead version, the split cd version SUCKS), and maybe This Is The End Of Your Life from the new EP. Just a suggestion.

kurt, i wasn't just talking about you using the "emo" tag with this band.... everyone seems to do it...well, i guess that tag gets thrown on ANY band nowadays...

hey, i heard this emo band today called Hobastannk or something...

ahaha, just kidding...

my friends tried, and i mean "REALLY" tried to get me to like this band...i just couldn't stomach it....

i did read the review though....i just don't agree that this album is good:)

Yea, I forgot to say that I heard Emotion Is Dead first, then I got this cd. I thought it was bland at first, but it really grew on me. Hot tuna.

Ha, I was right. A bunch of mindless idiotic postings. If you atually read the review, I said they weren't emo. Nor did I say they were screamo. I said there was a screamo part in a song.
Plus, I know the buddyhead guys like more than 2 bands, it's called sarcasm. And no, they aren't a "christian band". Brett and Chad are christian, thats it. And I don't see how being a christian band would make a band "wussy" in the first place. Geez, you people blow my mind. And Jimi, I usually agree with everything you post, but come on, read the review first. And yea, the EP is pretty intresting by the way......

i saw them live opening for Get Up Kids last year in Pittsburgh. They were terrible. There were maybe 5 people actually getting into it, everyone else was just kinda standing there. I almost felt sorry for them.

I bought this album 2 months ago, because i had a lot of money i guess and people told me it was good. Boy was I in for a suprize..

The lyrics on here make me want to find a blonde girl and scream things in ARABIC at her face! In ARABIC for god's sake! Terrible.

Song 1,3, and 10 are the best songs. And they are nothing special at all. NEWS FLASH!! Even "EMO KIDS" will hate this shit.

this shit makes me want to puke...

if you want to throw the term "emo" around, don't make it worse by tagging it to a band like this...

there are plenty of good indy rock bands out there who are about a million times better than this band...

I own this album [although I got it for free, so that's saying something]. It, to me, is everything that is wrong with "emo" music. It's the Spinal Tap of emo. That being said, it still is catchy as all fuck. But come on, the lyrics are *so* trite and 8th grade poetry class, and the music is bland at best. Their new EP is pretty interesting, though, this band definitely has evolved.

I like the Juliana Theory. Really. They are in now way "screamo." Do a little research. They don't even incorporate any elements of screamo. Try The Locust or From Autumn To Ashes. Not The Juliana Theory.

Never could really get into this band. Christian emo (Im assuming they have some tie to Christianity, being on Tooth and Nail, but I could be very wrong), I dont think it gets much wussier:) I dunno why, but this band just doesnt really do it for me.
