Reviews

It might take you a longer time to read this review than listen to the actual album, so I apologize ahead of time for wasting your time.

Trash Talk plays an infamous subgenre of hardcore aptly named “powerviolence” (I’m not even going to start with how stupid I think that genre name is; I might not stop), but it is evident in the chorus of “Dig” that the band is more than willing to throw back to mid-`80s hardcore; “Well of Soul”’s bridge even channels the nihilistic mentality of Negative Approach with “Shoot me, suck me, stab me, fuck me, kneel before me. I have swallowed God. I am alone.” The dark lyrics are shouted in call-and-response form by the band’s two vocalists and coincide quite nicely with the ominous atmosphere that engulfs the album.

Each of the 12 tracks proves to be an admirable test of dexterity and endurance. It is in this which Trash Talk proves expertise; despite the genre’s tedious abuse of speed extremes, the band manages to vary their tempos and lace it together with unpredictability. “I Block,” to name one, explodes into an amalgam of blast beats, D-beats and tom triplets after a slow, brooding, distorted bass-line -- all of which are accomplished in under 20 seconds. Most of the frills are tucked behind the intensity of a raw recording and can get a little old with how similar things start sounding.

Overall, it’s nothing groundbreaking, earth shattering or any other word that’s breaking some form of mineral. If you’re a fan of the genre, check this out as they are truly one of the best doing it now. If you hate the genre, you won’t like it -- simple as that!

Not here to "prove a point"; I genuinely wanted help on description.

And 18? That's two years older than I really am, so I must be doing something right.

Posted by mikexdude on 2008-11-28 12:36:50

So yeah, I dub thee "fast hardcore". Thank you.

What I meant to have written was they're a mix of powerviolence-esque intensity/drumming with some old school influence, I guess not really completely powerviolence.

I looooove Ceremony; one of my favorite hardcore bands ever, but they're doing something a wee bit different than Trask Talk

Posted by givemeamuseumandillfillit on 2008-11-28 12:32:17

This is the only site i've ever seen anyone call Trash Talk power-violence.

    MikexDude, you've made your point, you're 18.

    My Score:

Does every fucking band that's influenced by Infest need to get the powerviolence tag? I just don't see the connection here, maybe thats because I don't know much about powerviolence other then Infest and Man Is The Bastard.

This review is pretty spot on regardless. I thought this album was a pretty big step down from Plagues but I do like it more now then when I first heard it, so maybe it's a grower.

Oh yeah and was anybody else bewildered by this comment?

"Okay, well then Trash Talk definitely isn't. They have a few parts that sound kind of like power violence, but so do AFI on that radio single from 4 years ago."

And Ceremony is an amazing band, please somebody direct me to all the bands that sound just like them because Scared People and Still Nothing Moves You are both fantastic records with their own sound in my opinion. Violence Violence is awesome as well but the newer records are something else entirely.

    Ceremony>Trash Talk

Posted by sugarfull on 2008-11-28 03:06:11

    Just call it fast hardcore.

Posted by Misanthropee on 2008-11-28 03:03:25

I love this sort of stuff, but I've gotten the impression these guys are pretty derivative. This genre of music has been beaten to death by far superior bands; if you really have something to say, why just ape 15-year-old records?

Still, I'll give this a chance at some point as the band's hype seems to be increasing and I can't understand why -- though audience nostalgia is my best guess.

Posted by mikexdude on 2008-11-27 19:45:30

What everyone's failed to tell me, is what subgenre of hardcore this is to replace what I said about powerviolence?

    Thrash?

Posted by sugarfull on 2008-11-27 19:14:59
    My Score:

Not too big a fan of this band. All the people who are jocking this, and calling it powerviolence, should listen to a Man is the Bastard or a Neanderthal record.

Trash Talk just don't seem that creative to me. That's my biggest problem with the band.

Posted by homemadebullshit on 2008-11-27 18:27:19

    fucking awesome

nothing against william, but he comes across as pompous and irritating on almost every thread i see him post in.

i enjoy this band but enjoy ceremony more.

Posted by bytheslice on 2008-11-27 01:05:05

I haven't heard this album, but I've seen them live twice, and they completely killed it.

I like Trash Talk better than Ceremony. That's just me.

I'll buy this as soon as I find it.

Thank you eerf. As for the arguing, I try to make the comment section make up for the boring review... keeps things interesting.

Posted by mikexdude on 2008-11-26 23:16:24

Hey man, I knew you were just fucking around. Unfortunately, I like to give people a hard time. No hard feelings.

    THIS IS POWERVIOLENCE!

Posted by BrandonSideleau on 2008-11-26 22:32:02

You know what? I usually hate generic shit and the whole "power violence" label makes it sound like something brainless knuckleheads would listen to, BUT I like this; I think there is perhaps more to it that initially meets the eye.

Posted by SlowStupidHungry on 2008-11-26 13:39:54

Mike, I don't really care as much as it seems like I do. I am just nitpicking.

also this is a good review. score is for the review and all the arguing about powerviolence.

ceremonys still nothing moves you is better then this in my opinion.

which is better though, walking disease or ruined?

    Posted by the_other_scott on 2008-11-26 13:21:30

    will. you are bsd right?

Posted by mikexdude on 2008-11-26 12:50:58

They wouldn't if you'd heard any of those bands. Ceremony is closer to power violence than them.

You don't have to sound like Lifetime to be melodic hardcore.

It's heavier than most punk, consist of the really heavy or really fast shtick/short songs. I'm sorry.

I love arguing so keep coming back to me.

Posted by SlowStupidHungry on 2008-11-26 12:34:26

"Trash Talk fits what wikipedia plays; I win!

    Scores for me."

They wouldn't if you'd heard any of those bands. Ceremony is closer to power violence than them.

And I don't "grade bands" on "technicality." Yeah, right. There's just a billion better pissed HC bands than Ceremony... And Bracewar? Come on...

Score is for the Aneurysm Rats record. Entertaining.

    My Score:

"Ceremony are okay I guess but there's a billion bands that do the same thing a lot better that barely any of their fans know about. Same thing goes for this band."

Don't lecture me about recondite hardcore bands that do this and do that better. Within the unvarying music of hardcore, I personally merit bands on the passion I feel they exude... not necessarily the talent or technicality backing them (though those are important as well). We just might have divergent ways of assessing bands, but don't make a pompous statement like "there's a billion other bands that do it better." Farrar, to me, is probably the most pissed off and sincere dude of today with a mic in his hand. The only other bands right not that I can think of at the moment, that I would compare to being of an equal standing and playing with a comparable tenacity are:

    Aneurysm Rats
    Disnihil
    Ghostlimb
    Assholeparade
    ... and maybe, maybe Bracewar

Those aforementioned bands (and obviously Ceremony) currently represent to me, some of the best hardcore within that branch.

Score is for the dude hating, and caring too much about bullshit elitist subgenres

Posted by mikexdude on 2008-11-26 01:58:30

Then what is it exactly; apparently, i've been misinformed.

And don't bring AFI into this.

Posted by SlowStupidHungry on 2008-11-26 01:56:44

Okay, well then Trash Talk definitely isn't. They have a few parts that sound kind of like power violence, but so do AFI on that radio single from 4 years ago.

Posted by mikexdude on 2008-11-26 01:18:23

    Powerviolence police!

Powerviolence is way too specific of a genre to be strictly influenced, you either are or you're not in some form another.

Posted by SlowStupidHungry on 2008-11-26 00:47:23

"I'll take ceremony over any other hardcore band of today.

    Score is for them"

Ceremony are okay I guess but there's a billion bands that do the same thing a lot better that barely any of their fans know about. Same thing goes for this band.

BTW, not power violence. PV-influenced, maybe... But not power violence.

Posted by xote on 2008-11-25 23:29:13

I didn't want to like this band due to the hype but damn are they good.

I think powerviolence is a funny genre but at the same time pretty bad ass. Better tham "emo-violence"

I'll take ceremony over any other hardcore band of today.

Posted by mikexdude on 2008-11-25 21:14:30

I agree, hardcore gets a pretty bad rap by a lot of the viewers and don't really listen to it in depthly.

    Your link title is stupid.

Posted by Archangel on 2008-11-25 21:11:27
    My Score:

Live show is amazing, album is excellent, and your link title is stupid. More and more I realize that hardcore doesn't seem to have a place on punknews... everyone gets labeled TOUGH GUY or CLICHE, regardless of what the music actually sounds like.

Posted by mikexdude on 2008-11-25 21:03:51

My reasoning: they're a bit more heavier, sludgier, and technical than most thrashier bands like Ceremony or Coke Bust hence why I thought this; You can't deny they have powerviolence tendencies with some old school hardcore roots, hence what I said in my review.

    Posted by 1234go on 2008-11-25 20:56:22

you clearly have no idea what power violence is.

Posted by victim on 2008-11-25 20:53:22
    My Score:

Thought this release was good, but I actually liked the parts where they were apeing Ceremony best and they cut down on that this time it seemed like.

Posted by remainsunseen on 2008-11-25 20:08:13

really, you think the singer(lee) is boring live?
everytime i see trash talk he is going nuts the entire set, never stops.

Posted by mikexdude on 2008-11-25 18:13:57

Generic lyrics or not, it fits the music perfectly. I mean, how poetic and unique can you get with blunt hatred? I think they do a good job.

I really do think the drummer of this band keeps them from being too conventional. The subtle time changes are incredible.

Posted by SlowStupidHungry on 2008-11-25 18:03:54

Okay band ruined by horrible vocals and lyrics that are somehow too generic even by paltry hardcore standards (how do you do that?!).

Posted by CCSummers on 2008-11-25 17:24:03
    My Score:

So good. Not as good as their last two releases though. People like to complain about em them. Specially the orgers.

Posted by NotPatriotic on 2008-11-25 17:22:47

This band is interesting, the music is fuckin crazy, but live the singer is just too boring. IDK, I like the band, but they could be a lot better.

Posted by mikexdude on 2008-11-25 14:29:52

Thank you for not nit-picking, sometimes I am deaf to genres.

Posted by Tangy on 2008-11-25 14:14:15

Trash Talk is not a powerviolence band. I'm not nit-picking. Good album, though.

saw these guys open for the bronx during cmj and it reminded me of pissed of high school kids who got bored of grand theft auto and decided to start a hardcore band.

so generic. so cliche. sorry dudes, you just didn't do it for me.

Posted by thirtyseconds on 2008-11-25 12:25:16

Saw these MOSHERS with Paint It Black in Manchester. A lot of people seemed to be there for them. I just found them annoying and boring. Especially the frontman.

I agree with Brian... very very sludgy. Good drummer though

Posted by mikexdude on 2008-11-25 11:28:02

I can see what you mean, Brian. Especially considering if it was a little cleaner, you'd be able to hear all the neat stuff that's going on in a little better.

Posted by inagreendase on 2008-11-25 11:09:34

OK to watch live. Can't really get into them musically. Way sludgier than what I can take, I guess.
