While browsing the clearance shelf at Half-Price Books (one of my favorite places in Chicago), I stumbled upon this CD. I was originally drawn to it because it was a Clash tribute album. The second factor was the rather impressive track listing. What sealed the deal was seeing Ice Cube and Mack 10 doing "Should I Stay or Should I Go."

Also, The Urge was a ska band for a long time that did a 180 in the mid to late 90s to a groove-rap type band not unlike 311 and old Incubus. They had a major label album and single (featuring Nick Hexum of 311) that didn't take off. I was shocked with how good Cracker's cover was. Score's for that song. Even though it's a competent cover, I don't really care for the 311 cover, it's too much like the original. FTR I haven't smoked weed in a long time. Topper was never in Afghan Whigs, though they did sample the drum part, obviously. Their "Lost in the Supermarket" is my favorite from the album actually. needs more cowbell. that album you're asking about is City Rockers-A Tribute to the Clash. That is a really solid tribute. I got it from an english teacher at my high school who also gave me a vhs copy of Rude Boy. Pretty rad dude, except that he married one of his old students naught two three years after her graduation. That was less than rad. silverchair's cover of London's Burning made me fall in love with punk. I first heard this disc when I was 14 at my first job in my uncle's warehouse. Apparently one of the dudes to worked back there lived in jersey was was like bff's with a couple of the people in F-Minus. He looked like cypher from the matrix. Anyways, thanks for helping me revisit the summer of 8th grade. Anarchyadam, this is the one you're talking about. http://rateyourmusic.com/release/comp/various_artists___tribute_a lbums___the_clash/city_rockers__a_tribute_to_the_clash/ I don't know for sure if he does, but he appears as the drummer on the track according to the liner notes. Pretty sure Topper Headon's got nothing to do with the Afghan Whigs. There was another clash tribute that was way better. I can't remember what it was called, but I think it had Skinnerbox doing "Straight to hell", and hot water music doing "Clampdown" I cant believe how terrible this album sounds. And Cheat is easily one of The Clash's worst songs ever, the only reason Rancid chose it is because they wanted to seem punx for playing a UK only song. Lame. This is defenitely a tribute album. You don't remember Cracker? I must be old. 311's "white man in hammersmith palais" is the best cover on here in my opinion. they stay true to the original, it just sounds smoother and cleaner due to the production values and Nicks smooth voice which is nothing like Strummers. Musically they nail it and and SA's backups are dead on to Mick Jones'. SydBarrett420 (blaze every day) is stoked for the 311 song. |
