As a young punker, I was excited by just about any band that sounded like NOFX. From clones that only lasted an album to their superior predecessors, NOFX served as a gateway of sorts.

Roughly 10 years later, Municipal Waste is serving a similar purpose. I am not a circle pit maniac, nor am I a crust warrior, but I am really enjoying thrashy songs about getting wasted and other cool stuff. I've dug back to bands like Napalm Death and Slayer while also enjoying records from newer dudes like Toxic Holocaust and A.N.S.

So, here’s a band that sounds like they came from the `80s and…uh, I don’t really know what I am talking about. I saw Ramming Speed last year at The Fest in someone’s living room and it was fuckin’ sweet. I found this 7″ of theirs the other day and it rules too. Four songs, including one about pizza and one about machines taking over. Competent production, colored vinyl, goofy artwork. Works for me.

this review is just too conceptual for you all... er...

actually though i think it does describe the sound pretty well. kinda like municipal waste, but with some old napalm death and slayer mixed in. there's a new school thrash feel to it though, so you can feel some of the skate punk sounds of ANS come through. and the songs are about things like dystopian visions of machines overtaking us all and eating pizza and drinking beer.

I agree with salsashark that this is absolutely not a review in favoure of the band when it doesn't explain the band's music any more than some remarks about pizza and getting wasted. Please update the review. Regards

What kind of a review is this? This is Punknews, not Razorcake.

Yaaaaarrrrggghhh! Brainwreck is a fucking thrashterpiece. Such a fun band. Awesome dudes, backed hard. Boston represent!

    24HourPriapism (February 3, 2009)

    i miss bones brigade.

    preston (February 3, 2009)

Nevermind, I read the review and you've denied your allegiance to either.

    preston (February 3, 2009)

So which are you? A circle pit maniac or a crust warrior?

    d_bag (February 3, 2009)

yeah the Brainwreck lp is fucking killer and they're really good live.

who cares about comparing "new" and "old" thrash bands? the opinion that most recent stuff is somehow inherently inferior to bands like Nuclear Assault and Exodus is ridiculous and played out. a lot of those classic bands put out shitty records too so stop romanticizing. these days there is just as much good as there is bad.

    xote (February 3, 2009)

Almost all of these retro thrash bands comming out now are not that good. This isn't horrible but just seems bland.

    I miss Nuclear Assualt.

But I guess it's good the thrash vibe is back. Medicore thrash is better than no thrash...

Some newer thrash bands that are actually good are Trasher, Infinite Missiles and Talk Sick Earth.

looking forward to brainwreck, it's in my "to buy" queue

    score is for the review

    the_problem_with_fire (February 3, 2009)

haven't heard this, but their most recent full length, brainwreck is awesome and it's pretty socially conscious so i wouldn't consider it all style over substance.

    GlassPipeMurder (February 3, 2009)

saw them in a basement. kinda fun. all style, no substance.
