The DecemberistsThe Hazards of Love (2009)EMI Group Reviewer Rating: User Rating: Contributed by: american_666_jesus (others by this writer | submit your own) Published on April 7th 2009
Having just finished my tenth listen through of this album, I feel I finally have a good enough sense of the album to write a proper review. Beginning as singer Colin Meloy's attempt to compose a song to go along with Anne Briggs' EP, The Hazards of Love, it soon grew into something much, much more. What we are given is what can best be described as a "folk-rock opera." It is a massive undertaking to take on such a project, but I had faith that if any band could do it successfully, it would be the Decemberists.

This is not a good album. Nah, I like plenty of wimpy stuff. But this band is just so fey, so old-timey and precocious, I can't stand it. They make Iron and Wine sound like The Acacia Strain. When I heard "Career Opportunities" being sung by a children's choir, i was extremely hesitant to accept it at first. Upon realizing what the song was about, I knew that there was no other way to do that song. So many bands use these kids in songs to reinforce a sense of innocence and more often than not, it comes out a failure. Again, Joe Strummer has used these kids in a way that isn't the least bit clichéd or unnecessary. It is so haunting to hear the ghosts children sing of revenge against their father, The State. "I was worried at first because it is hard to break the flow of the album. However, this interaction with the album is something that is all a part of the experience. By changing the sides of the records, you become a part of the album and that's what it wants." I've gotten through this one 6 or 7 times and it's not hitting me yet. I don't mind concept albums but it feels like they're re-using melodies too many times on this one. I understand it's a way to keep the story going but their not offering anything new here. I've always been a fan of their longer tracks...The Tain, The Island and had high hopes for this one. I'm holding out hope though. Elliot's probably insecure and feels he must prove his masculinity through the music he listens to. Right elliot, which is why about 85% of the album is made up of prog and metal breakdowns and riffs... Wimpy music for wimpy people. I know I've been mostly at odds with your scores here, .org, but I enjoyed this read. This is one of the most underrated/misunderstood albums of the year, but if you give it time and patience, you can surely grow to love it. good review, however it seems to raise readers hopes (according to the comments). will still , listen, not with high expectations though. One of the longest reviews I've ever seen on Punknews. So, did he like the record or not? I just couldn't tell. I had incredibly high hopes for this, and I anticipated it being my favorite album of the year. This album just doesn't really do anything for me. Quite good. I still prefer the Crane Wife, though. I have already started tiring of this. I might have listened to it one too many times in the first week, though. I guess I'll end up listening to this at some point this year. I haven't been too thrilled by their "epic" type albums though. I think I listened to The Crane Wife like once or twice at most. "folk-rock opera" what an absolute wank 5 stars!!! Woah. I was disappointed initially in this, but I'll give it another shot. Those are some fuckin' paragraphs. | Features
