The Kills / The Horrorslive in Philadelphia (2009)live show Reviewer Rating: Contributed by: Jelone (others by this writer | submit your own) Published on May 8th 2009
The subtle art of droning was in full bloom at the Theater of Living Arts, courtesy of the Kills, the Horrors and Magic Wand. While the TLA has never exactly had the best sound, that weakness turned to be a plus, enhancing the swirling fits of garage rock noise emanating from the bands. The bands drew an interesting mix, with the Kills pulling in hipsters a-plenty -- big shiny garish clothes! Pseudo-ironic mustaches! Sweatbands? -- and the Horrors attracting more of a punk/metal crowd. How else can you explain the kids in Misfits and System of a Down tees? And while I missed Magic Wand’s set (I had vegan BBQ chicken pizza to eat, clam flammit), I still gotta say, overall, this was a tasty show.

discount awesome, but the kills fucking suck I'm liking the reviews you wrote today. Your enthusiasm definitely shows, and it's all still pretty well-written. i liked the horror's better when they just played prodigy songs with different words. After the first EP, the Kills quickly lost their appeal for me. That first EP on vinyl was a good time in my aural life, but the band becomes so grating and nonsense over long periods of time or attempts at differentiation. Gives me a headache to get halfway through one of their full lengths with yet more to go. ECP - You are quite correct. I'm big on the buffalo freebird myself. I am really digging the new Horrors album. I would wager that this time next year, the order of these two bands would be switched. Pissed that I missed this show, The Horrors are awesome. | Features
