Rocky Votolato is an artist who is not only consistent, but is consistently good. On his previous releases, Votolato has brought forth to the listener rustic, poetic verses layered upon gorgeous, sparking guitar work with simple drum and harmonica backing. The Brag and Cuss carries on this proud tradition, but adds banjo, organ and slide guitar in healthier doses. As listeners have come to expect from his previous records, the record is layered and mixed as close to perfect as possible, with the various instruments and singing weaving together a rich, vibrant texture of sound that captures the blend of folk and alt-country that Votolato has made all his own. One of the strengths of the album is that very few of the songs really run together, and use the abovementioned instruments in varied enough combinations and roles to eliminate any redundancy, and at the same time creating a wide range of sonic approaches to the emotional depth of Votolato’s lyrical work.

It was a really sick show. Only like 35 people showed up, too. The best part might have been that Rocky explained the influence and inspiration for most of the songs he played, like how "Silver Trees" was inspired by a Shel Silverstein poem. Who would have thought, eh? Oh shit, I totally forgot about those house shows, I wanted to go to one, that sounded awesome. The found this record extremely boring. Hopefully, his next release will be an improvement. Weird that this review just popped up this week, I just saw him do a house show this past Saturday. Love this guy and this record's great. I still probably play Makers and Suicide Medicine more than this, but it's still decent. Go see him live, he's awesome. Played a Waxwing song and even "Without Eyes Still Seeing" when I saw him last year. this album is fucking fantastic. Great album. def a grower though, Really do not like this as well as the previous two albums (yes I know he has more but those two are what I'd consider his best). Still pretty decent. Not as good as his older stuff or Waxwing, but still great. I can't believe this wasn't reviewed before. I love this man, this cd is a great one. |
