2009 has been a great year for stirring emo music in the vein of what was done in the heyday of the genre. Especially the bands from the Count Your Lucky Stars roster (e.g. Castevet, Joie de Vivre, Annabel) have proven themselves as talented musicians, with their ability to concoct amazing pieces of musical art. Although not being signed to the aforementioned label, Pennsylvania's Snowing (born from the ashes of now-defunct bands Street Smart Cyclist and Boy Problems) seems to share this talent as they prove with the ironically titled Fuck Your Emotional Bullshit.

The band starts out with the happy and upbeat song "Sam Rudich," a catchy, well-paced song that introduces the band's sound -- somewhere between math rock (think of Maps & Atlases) and Cap 'n Jazz-esque emo. The song has a very warm feel to it and gets even better when the dual vocals kick in. Next comes a tune in which the listener gets to fully witness John Galm's impetuous and stirring vocal ability, which is reminiscent of Algernon Cadwallader's main vocalist.

The five songs on Fuck Your Emotional Bullshit sound very familiar at times. Fortunately, this familarity isn't enough to spoil all the fun provided by the catchy riffs and joyful yelling. Also, the twinkly guitars seem to have become a trademark of sorts for bands in this niche, with Snowing playing it out quite well. If you enjoy Mineral or any of Tim Kinsella's work, you'll definitely appreciate this.

Some might say Snowing's Fuck Your Emotional Bullshit doesn't add much value to a formula that has been used so many times, but I don't think that's what they're going for. Why change a winning formula that emphasizes musicianship, raw passion and honesty if you're blessed with all these ingredients in high quantities? In a nutshell, that's exactly where all the beauty of Fuck Your Emotional Bullshit lies.

    not evolved.

    RedElephant (September 6, 2009)

score is for the midwestern emo revival.

score would be higher if most the bands evolved would tweak it a bit, instead of writing albums that have already been written over a decade ago.
