Panthro U.K. United 13 is a band from the beardcore mecca of Gainesville, FL. Their album Sound of a Gun was released on No Idea Records in 1998, and this album is pretty damn good.

The band’s sound jumps from straight-ahead punk rock tracks like “Sound of a Gun” and “Princess” to the more metal and alt-rock sound of “Alien Cok” and “P.U.K.U. 13 Fight Song.” The title track, “Sound of a Gun” is a pretty laid-back track that rocks the fuck out, and it’s definitely the strongest track on the album.

The band’s sound is wrapped up in two main parts: the vocals and the guitar work. The vocals are much clearer than many of their peers but like to roll into emotive shouts. With the way the album is mixed, it comes out sounding raw and real, like the singer is trying to shout over the music at you. The guitars switch from slow-chugging metal to simple pop-punk from track to track. The guitar work fits each song like a glove, and the stylistic switch from track to track flows remarkably well.

The sound of this album can most easily be compared to Hot Water Music’s album Fuel for the Hate Game. But the comparison is more based of off production and sound quality, because Panthro blazes ahead with mid-tempo punk rock more reminiscent of bands like the Mushuganas.

The more I try, the harder it is to really pin down another band that sounds like these guys. They’re a pretty unique punk rock band that brings that little something extra to the table. All in all, it’s a good release from No Idea with some hits and some misses, but the hits are dead on.

"I love this band, but I think I like SCRM more.

Ahhhhh! That reminds me that the Thumbs are playing Fest!!"

SCRM were AWESOME... I wish I was more aware of them when I briefly lived in DC.

No Idea does ever get around to the greatly talked about anthology

There's gotta be a reason the CD version of this is like $2 from No Idea...

This record is at least a 4 (out of 5). It's a solid album that I've played a million times since I first got it sent for review back when it came out. It IS a classic underground punk rock album that seriously slipped under the radar. However, I think the 7"s are better. If No Idea does ever get around to the greatly talked about anthology (as long as everything is remastered and includes the unreleased stuff and comp tracks) it'll be a solid 5/5. I put out out three Black Cougar Shock Unit records and I still think Panthro is the better band (more-so production wise than anything else... some of those BCSU songs are classics, but the recordings lack the power then needed)... if Panthro recorded new stuff, now that WOULD be something.

Wait, is this the first time this has been reviewed on here? Really? WOW.

I reviewed this album because I found it to be an important album. I love this band and I think they're incredible. I'll admit, I rated this album too low. But these guys have been getting more and more attention, and I feel that they need a review on this site.

Great record. I have a great recording of Chuck Ragan covering the title track live.

This is my all time favorite album. I saw them in Gainesville a number of times in the late 90s.

I am likely going to the fest this year solely to see Panthro.

Little bit of trivia: This LP also made an appearance in the movie high fidelity, when Jack black was flipping through some records.

All their other bands were great, but there was some magic in this line up.

    House on fire
    Black cougar shock unit
    Super chinchilla rescue mission

I think Alex is in Ape Shit! right now?

    PUKU13 < DXG

    ...but still a great album.

Fair point guv, but aren't these guys reforming to play before a show just before Fest this year? It just wouldn't be the done thing for them not to have a review on the org. whatsoever.

Mike has a point but at the same time I think all records deserve the same amount of attention. If you havent heard it, it's new to you. It's a long lost no idea record which fits this site well.

    mikexdude (September 11, 2009)

I just feel like there's so much new music out there that could be in this review slot, that unless this was a classic record or what you think is a classic record, it should just be left alone.

    mikexdude (September 11, 2009)

I feel bad I keep picking on you, Allagespete. Don't get me wrong, your reviews ARE well written. I just think it's a waste to review something that's 10 years old and not have it be something you think of as a classic or something. I dunno. I'm too tired to think.
