The Weakerthans / Rock Plaza Centrallive in New York (2009)Anti- Records Reviewer Rating: Contributed by: Brian (others by this writer | submit your own) Published on September 22nd 2009
I was definitely that fan when I walked into Bowery Ballroom with my friend to check out the bands opening for the Weakerthans. Our interest was expressly invested in seeing John K. Samson and company for our first time, but out of common courtesy viewed Tomte, who must've just began their set. When the amusing frontman jibed with the crowd in between songs in a thick European accent, we eventually came to realize this band was from Germany. My entire interest in German indie rock kinda starts at Velveteen and ends at the Kids Explode, (a) scene(s) Tomte didn't seem to quite derive from. But their very vaguely Spoon-ish indie rock (minus Spoon's weirder, recent adult-alterna vibes, I guess?) was cool, simultaneously detached yet involved, and a little messy at best and pretty listenable at worst. Their tunes get a B-, but their vocalist/guitarist's accented banter ("I'm going to buy all the anti-Bush shirts on eBay no one wears anymore and make one giant shirt out of it") gets an A.
Also, the Weakerthans apparently have a tour bus. Totally weird, but good for them. Please login or register to post comments. What are the benefits of having a Punknews.org account?
There's not many bands that I haven't seen that I really, really want to see. The Weakerthans are one of them. Score's for them. Score is for Night Windows still being their set opener. Such a perfect song to kick a show off with. I'm going to see the Weakerthans in Chicago on Friday, yay! saw them the night before in brooklyn and they were flawless. they also closed with "virtute the cat explains her departure" which was awesome. I first saw them as a three piece and they were solid. More than 12 years later, they are still my favourite to see live. These guys always put on a great show, saw them in Toronto back in March and it was fantastic! Was going to see them in Hamilton last Tuesday but went and saw Alice In Chains instead. Looking forward to Friday. If the guy Preston below me is right about Rock Plaza Central then I'm in for a boring time during their set. I know exactly what you mean, Preston, when a band is all build up and no pay-off. It can be infuriating. I have to say I didn't like Rock Plaza Central. All there songs sounded like intro songs, you know like the first song on an album that leads into a rocker? The songs didn't go anywhere. There was no dynamic. I found them boring. both bands rule. RPC's latest album is great, ya'll should check it. very solid show Saw them the night before in Brooklyn. Great show. really wish i could've gone to this!
