Sonic Boom Six / The Skintslive in Leeds (2009)Ska and Reggae Reviewer Rating: Contributed by: wearestillalive (others by this writer | submit your own) Published on October 16th 2009
I think I must be getting a little tired of ska, because I was just not taken by the Skints on this night. The London four-piece have started to make quite the name for themselves 'round the UK this year -- they've been picked up by Sonic Boom Six's label, Rebel Alliance Recordings, and the crowd was definitely into them. I think I would have been a year or so ago, too: they’re catchy; the basslines were pounding and relentless; the songs were stuffed full of sing-along moments; and they featured a girl playing both sax and flute. It’s a recipe for greatness, and it’s clear to see why they’re picking up fans left, right and centre, but personally, it all got a bit too simple and repetitive. Apart from the flute, which I guess makes them the ska version of Jethro Tull, there’s nothing here I hadn’t heard before.

No one asks what HollyBalls would do? How odd. Thanks for the heads up, tix are bought. Can't wait! hey fresnoska i'm with the first two guys; SB6 are awful. Genre terrorism is terrible and I've seen them around 6 times (being the awful support for various gigs, as well as a couple of headline shows) and I think i've enjoyed maybe one performance. I would love to see SB6 again. were poor My old band toured with SB6 in the UK a few years ago, and I saw them a few times in the States after that as well. Over 20 shows and I've never seen them give a subpar performance. It's unusual to find a band this consistently great. Well, aside from not being a 100% serious comment, Jethro Tull used a flute where most, if not all prog bands didn't, and the Skints use a flute where most, if not all ska bands don't. im sorry mate, but your opinions are really confusing me, that's not a review so much as a vague idea of your personal opinion- how does having a flute make a band like jethro tull, isnt it the music that defines them? does that mean when a reggae band has a piano they are like a reggae version of mozart? SB6 are good, but the Skints are better. Cant wait for SB6 to come back to the US this winter. I wish they were headlining though. I really dont want to see another big D show but oh well. What ever it takes to see SB6. What a great band, both live and on record. Saw them in LA last year, and I doubt they will ever tour out here again, as they rarely come stateside. I would kill to catch them in the UK. Those are absolutely insane opinions. Sonic Boom Six are awful full stop. wow, sonic boom six are awful live | Features
