For Fat Wreck Chords fans of the late 1990s and early 2000s, both Lagwagon and No Use for a Name were undeniably two cornerstones of that movement, bringing great melodic punk to the scene one album after another. And arguably one of the top acoustic offerings from the punk community came from the frontmen of both bands getting together and stripping down their respective band's tunes (and the Caper rebuilding them with strings, piano and accordion), offering new insights into the melodies and (again arguably) producing some versions that even bested their originals. For my money, that split featuring a lone acoustic (yet stickered) guitar on the cover art was one of the best releases of 2004.

Wait, Tony Sly = Joey Cape? They are the same person? OMG it all makes sense now!!! Hahaha, what? I'll take the Caper any day, thank you. Hello, Bad Astronaut anyone?!! "And this easily destroys the solo albums by Joey Cape and Tim Barry" "And this easily destroys the solo albums by Joey Cape and Tim Barry" Every song is memorable. A well-written folk/acoustic album! Not to downplay the album, but you won't find anything new here. If you're a NUFAN fan, or a fan of his side of the Caper split, you'll enjoy this. If you're not a fan and you think this might be what sways you, it probably won't. Not a NUFAN fan but this album sounds good from what I heard here streaming. I really can't get into this? I have listened to it a few times and I have nothing positive to say about it other than the cover art looks cool? Pretty damn enjoyable album. Disappointed that not every track is as upbeat as "Toaster in the Oven," "Amends," and "Via Munich," though. Sly is better at writing upbeat songs than downers. And this easily destroys the solo albums by Joey Cape and Tim Barry, Only listened to this twice so far. I was surprised at how depressing it intially seems. I loved NUFAN back in the day, but even in high school I had problems with them lyrically - and I'm not even known for analyzing lyrics all that much. Take away the distortion and you are forced to focus on the words here and they're not that great. I think I just heard a rock, paper, scissors reference. Joey Cape's lyrics on the other hand are top notch, so him I can do acoustic. Yeah, this is really a very well done review, keep up the great work. I need to check this out. Love NUFAN and LOVED the split - hell, even my wife loves it and she listens to mostly country. "Toaster in the bathtub"? Was it plugged in and ready to fall? Awesome review, well done. |
