Spring Heeled Jack USAStatic World View (1996)Moon Ska Reviewer Rating: Contributed by: patod (others by this writer | submit your own) Published on July 23rd 2010
There is so much ska hate in the world. "It was over by '97"; "Skanking is fucking stupid"; "Ska fans are most likely all 14 years old"...the insults go on. As a ska fan you sometimes feel down, like you shouldn't be a rude boy, but then you hear this album and everything is better. With the vinyl reissue from Asbestos Records and digital downloads from Paper + Plastick, I figured there wouldn't be a better time to review this ska-punk gem than now. Static World View has everything you want in a ska record: top-notch hornlines, a metric ton of upstrokes, lyrics that you can connect to, even toasting for god's sake. This is a record for ska fans by ska fans and Spring Heeled Jack is just trying to make you proud to love to skank.

"Let's get into trouble, baby." You are missing something. Songs From Suburbia is fantastic, and I live in CA. I still listen to it regularly. Are these guys mainly a New England thing? listened to it once and didn't really care for it Man, if this isn't an inflated score. I've had this album since it was released and I could barely hum any of these songs. Songs of Suburbia is loads better. This album's good, but Songs From Suburbia is a helluva lot better What the hell is 'toasting'? I apologize to the editor who had some serious work put into this. The chorus for Pay Some Dues sounds like they're saying "Piss on Dudes" I love Spring Heeled Jack. I picked up this album (and Songs From Suburbia) at the reunion shows. I definitely agree with you that ska gets a lot of undeserved hate. Also, you have great taste in music. Also, Jolene has been my favorite song since 2002. I was somewhat underwhelmed by this album when it first came out. I had loved "Addicted" and "Peg Leg Bates" on the Skarmageddon and Skanarchy compilations (what was with all the ska puns back then?) and was really excited to hear a whole album of their stuff. Nothing on this album quite matches those two songs (though the first three tracks come close), and the non-album versions are superior, in my opinion. Despite my initial disappointment, though, this is still a pretty solid album and one of the better ones to come out during the 90s ska revival. I like Songs from Suburbia a little more though. I still love me some ska, but referring to yourself as a rudeboy is fucking embarrassing. What a stupid term. The same goes for the term "skanking"...sure I did my fair share in my youth, but I still can't stand that word. Its basically just going a sloppy charlston anyways... |
