Liquid Limbs

Dichotomy [7-inch] (2010)

Sound Study

After melting plenty of faces with last year's excellent Orquid, Gainesville duo Liquid Limbs return with two new jams in the form of the Dichotomy 7", and it's exactly what one would expect from these guys: brooding, heavy-as-shit sludge rock that your older brother who used to be really into Kyuss would probably dig.

"Anti-Sacred Shrine" bursts with the sort of ear-bursting dissonance created by a distorted, down-tuned guitar, pounding drums and slyly haunting croons from vocalist Kevin Nowak, who's maybe the best frontman you've never heard of in terms of sheer ability.

On the B side we've got "Anxiety Free," a track with a little more of a slow build than its counterpart. The song's rolling verses are about as melodic as Liquid Limbs get, and those segments really show off Nowak's understated pipes. Syrupy-thick guitar squeals and crashing cymbals throughout the "chorus," as well as an abbreviated yet effective solo carry the rest of the song, and it's the band's best composition to date.

It's unclear when Liquid Limbs will reconvene for a new full-length, but Dichotomy ought to satiate most folks for now. Highly recommended.
