Wow, this band is really metal. I’m surprised that Hopeless put this release out, as it doesn’t sound like anything else on their roster. Good for them, I guess, diversification is always good. First reactions aside this is a really good band that I have been digging ever since I put the CD in my stereo for the first time.

Recently I have been in the mood for some hardcore, especially as a I drove to pick my girlfriend up and take her to see Dave Matthews, and this CD was the ass kicking I needed to get through that night. I was cruising down I-88 with the windows down and the stereo blasting to this CD, it just rocks so hard. While I was listening to this CD, I kept thinking that they sounded like the hey-day of thrash metal, bands like Slayer, old Metallica (before they became a shitty alternative band), and even some Megadeth. Yet this wasn’t all metal that I was listening too. Parts of songs reminded me of American Nightmare brand of hardcore punk, with the rasping vocals over insanely fast music. The singer’s voice on this was really interesting at times he could sing in a very melodic and almost pretty voice, which was mainly used as harmonizing effect, or to carry the choruses. Other times he had a growl which sounded like it could have come from the depths of hell, which was one of the best parts of the disc. Throughout each song he would growl right along with the guitars and drums, almost using his voice as another instrument of destruction. Most of the lyrics on this album deal with the darker things in life, death, suicide, insanity, each one a dark poetic tale.

The band does slow down to play a tasteful piano driven song on “Warmness of the Soul” which does start to dwell in the power ballads of the 80’s, but manages to keep interesting, and provides a much needed break from the breakneck intensity of the rest of the album. “Streets” is another diversion from the metal hardcore sound but instead of a slower song, they play more of a traditional skate punk style of a song. Complete with lyrics about living life your own way.

Over all this is a really solid release, especially for the band’s first full length. Also, according to their press release they have an amazing live show that includes an intense light show, visuals, and distinguishable appearance from the straight from the streets style of the majority of hardcore bands, which sounds interesting to me. I want to see these guys live. You should pick this up if you’re a fan of hardcore and thrash/death/black metal.

Yeah, this album is great, I personally think they are fairly original, kinda a mix between Slayer and hardcore punk. Good stuff.

Rumors of Avenged Sevenfolds live show should be saluted...they are true. I saw them and was blown away. Their live show definetely compliments their music well...they are both astonishing in their own right. I am looking forward to seeing them in September and anxiously anticipating their new release, "Waking the dead" (August 26). Their first full length release was great, but not complete, I hope their follow up can fill the gaps.

This cd is fucking amazing, you cant beat the beginning of We come out at night. I must say though, the song Thick and Thin is pretty fucking horrible. But all in all, I love this album and I'm looking forward to their new release.

Great cd. But to clear something up, the female vocals on The Art Of Subconscious illusion are not done Candace from Walls of Jerico.

The Agora in Cleveland? I saw them play at the Grog Shop in Cleveland in July I think to a crowd of seriously fifteen kids who were predominately there to see local bands. Avenged Sevenfold was incredible though. I like the lyrics, but I can admit that they're not incredibly profound. But you have to take into account that the oldest member of the band is 21, and the rest are 19 and 20 and that they probably recorded a lot of this material when they were maybe 17 and 18. Give these guys a few more years to mature and you may change your mind. I wish I was seeing them tomorrow at Mushroomhead's Halloween show at the Agora *sigh*.

    My Score:

I grew up listening to EBHC reminiscent of AFI and grew bored of them after All Hallow's EP. Fortunately, A7X came around and rejuvenated my hardcore taste. I heard "Darkness Surrounding" and loved the mix of melody and screaming. I searched for the CD far ad wide and finally found it. Then I got to see them play at the Agora, which blew my mind and will go down in history as one of the best shows ever. I love this band, they mean a lot to me. Zacky Vengence is a great guy and guitar player and M. Shadows is a sick man..the dude played piano on "Warmness of the Soul". He is very gifted and talented. If you are boneheaded enough to think that this release sucked then open up your fucking mind. Heavy fucking metal forever.

everything is better when you get it free, and i still didn't like this disc. i got both this and the new thrice and avenged sevenfold hasn't been in my player since. thrice is a regular visiter to my in-dash, A 7fold bored me. i'll give it another whirl in a couple months, maybe a current mood thing...

I liked this album at first, but lyrically this is shit. I mostly got it just for the cameo Candace from Walls of Jericho does on one of the tracks (me = huge WOJ fan) but that was kind of disappointing. Really forgettable album.

When the vocalist actually sings on this CD, he sounds like one of the joke voices from South Park for crying out loud. Besides that, I really like it though. The copy I have was released on good life recordings though, I guess Hopeless just bought the rights to the CD or something.
