Wow, what the hell happened to Agent Orange in the last 20 years. They have gone from being a very unique band that brought in a lot of creepy surf sounds to sounding like a pop punk band trying to cover their former selves. When I got home from school this year I started talking to my brother about music and asked what he had bought and what he was into and he showed me this. I was ecstatic being "Living In Darkness" is one of my all time favorite albums. I put it in and just wanted to cry.

The new songs just sound like all the other pop punk hey we want to be Bad Religion/NOFX/Blink and come up with are own song. They also decided to re-record some of their older classics and they were even worse. It sounds like some band playing Agent Orange covers, and not very well either. The songs that they redid were "Breakdown", "Everything Turns Gray", "El Dorado', "Cry For Help In A World Gone Mad", and "Bloodstains".

Really this is bad and ruins the legacy of the band. If you have gotten this, please do yourself a favor and get "Living In Darkness" you will thank me. As for this, Agent Orange needs to either get back to the dark, depressing music that made me fall in love with them, or just quit while they're ahead.

"Fuck, how can anyone say their new songs sound like their trying to be bad religion/NOFX when their much older than said bands. Its the other way around."

Both of those bands are from the early '80s so no they are not much older than them.

ok i've been a agent orange fan for about 5 years now, and i saw them live recently and they were unbelieveable live. i was truely impressed so i went to buy they're latest release... i was expecting good old agent orange and i got shit. i was expecting something like the what they were playing when i saw them, but it was total bullshit. granted there were about 3 decent songs on the whole cd but for the most part i was let down. and i felt embarrassed because i lent my cd to my friend who hadn't heard agent orange yet, and i had lost my other cd from agent orange and i had always been bragging about how much i like agent orange and how unique their sound is, and he told me after listening to that shit i lent him, that they suck. and i'm trying to get the other cd again so i can restore his faith in this truly awesome band. it sucks that they changed their sound to poppy bullshit but some bands just change for the worse sometimes. hopefully they'll realize their mistake in making this crap and go back to the odd surfer gloomy punk sound everyone loved.

Seriously, punknews.org staff, you guys need to make it so we can at least read the whole album titles...

Haha, everyone bow to the punk lord below. Listen, you assume too much of who we are, how we act, and what we listen to. By the way, Agent Orange was never "hardcore" really, they had a raw edge, but that is much different than being a hardcore band. That isn't even taking into consideration that hardcore is a genre. So... continue stroking your ego trying to impress kids less than half your age. Just because you became jaded doesn't mean you have to ridicule kids for listening to certain bands that you admittedly where listening to yourself at the same age.

By the way- I'm the guy who posted the "Agent Orange Gone Pop Punk?!" thingy, and I'm not into punk rock you fucking morons- Black Flag wasn't really "punk rock"- it was to great to be in the same group as shitty bands like the Sex Pistols or the Exploited, fuckin' kids- grow up! I quit listening to lame bands like NOFX and Sex Pistols WAYYYY back in '89 when I was 16. Go listen to something with balls- this shit is pathetic- Agent Orange WAS NEVER pop punk before this shit- they were hardcore to the bone, "Bloodstains" isn't exactly what I'd call "pop"- it's harder than some of the hardest shit today. Go listen to some Danzig or some Rollins- there are a few great bands today like Himsa and Planes Mistaken For Stars- but not many. So.......go finish primping your mohawks and ripping your clothes, because the truth is that you are just making a once meaningful form of music into a walking joke!!!!!

Why do 15 year old kids think they know what "punk" is? This band is one of the best ever. Just because the guitar sound may not be as distorted as it was 20 years ago doesn't mean they suck. I've seen them a handfull of times and each time they smoked. Yelling shit like "Fuck shit up dude" was already done 25 years ago and was new. Why do you think they have to play superfast and act rebelious to be good. It's already been done. Most of the bands now are just copying what these guys and others like the Adolescents have already done. No originality these days. Just a bunch of suburban kids acting like they're punk because they have purple hair. Sure it all comes down to taste, so why not just say it's not for you instead of being a posuer and saying someting childish like they're not punk enough? Retards.

yeah maybe i was a little harsh when i wrote this, actually i kinda wish i gave it more stars, 3-4 i was in a shitty mood when i wrote it and just hearing one of my favorite bands totally lose the classic sound just made it worse. i do stand by the fact that the new versions of the old songs suck, it sounds like band trying to cover AO, the newer stuff is ok, great if it were by a new band or a different one, but for AO i just found it lacking, even listening to again.

blood stains - speed kills - fast cars - cheap thrills - rich girls - fine wine - i've lost my since, i've lost control, i've lost my mind eeeehhhhhhhhh

    seek (June 6, 2002)

em... and "this is all i need" is one of the best songs they ever did. the rest of the newer stuff isn't nearly as great as the original jive, but it is still all good.

Wyzo, you tore that anonymous poster a much needed new anus, but there a few things you forgot to pick on him about:

"Agent Orange gone............POP PUNK!?!?!? That's like saying Black Flag rejoined as an easy listening radio rock act! This is purposperous!!!!" Heh... LIVE LONG AND PURPOSPEROUS!

"They should quit milking this shit and do something new!"
Didn't you just say you didn't hear this? Why are you acting like you know what is on it then?

    evildeadalive (June 5, 2002)

    Good call wyzo.

"Agent Orange gone............POP PUNK!?!?!? That's like saying Black Flag rejoined as an easy listening radio rock act!"

did you not hear living in darkness? Cause its poppy. maybe the rough production and nostalgia is making your jaded punk rock self forget that their surf inlfuenced punk is full of melodys, but they were always a really poppy band.

Fuck, how can anyone say their new songs sound like their trying to be bad religion/NOFX when their much older than said bands. Its the other way around.

The 'lost'(out of print) agent orange album that was put out with "unsafe at any speed" and all those songs was horrible and rightly out of print, but the new songs on this are just as good as the old stuff.

"Wouldnt last a day", and "this is all i need" are songs just as good as the old stuff, your just putting the old album on a pedestal due to nothing but historical context. The old stuff is poppy surfy punk, always has been, always will. They aren't a "hardcore" band so take the '77 patch off your jacket and lose the old school hero worship.

    and fuck you too.

    Vmac (June 4, 2002)

Yeah, Living in Darkness is the shit !!! This new stuff isin't very good, but their cover of Metallica "Seek And Destroy" is amazing...not sure it was AO anyway...

    Anonymous (June 4, 2002)

I think that the reviewer is being a little harsh here...please keep in mind that Agent Orange are fucking ancient. I first listened to this band, literally, 17 years ago. They ripped back then, absolutely shredded with the gloom/surf punk rock. When I bought this "new" AO I didn't expect anything at all, I mean c'mon...they're all done dude.

This CD isn't so bad...the new shit is decent, like the later AO stuff on their second album. The older stuff is great tho!

One thing that I don't understand about this band is how on the interviews on Living In Darkness they decry the punk scene and say they aren't a part of it, then on "Release" they seem to be a part of today's scene...c'mon guys, get your heads on straight!

Anyways...I like Agent Orange...classic band, just a bit wierd.

    Anonymous (June 4, 2002)

WHAT??? I haven't heard this album yet and I, hopefully, never will. What the fuck is this shit?!?!? Agent Orange gone............POP PUNK!?!?!? That's like saying Black Flag rejoined as an easy listening radio rock act! This is purposperous!!!! They should quit milking this shit and do something new! If you're gonna sing poppy(which they shouldn't in my opinion) then atleast don't destroy your classic songs-leave them be and change your damn name. Other than that it's their business and it's not my part to judge...............but..........DAMMIT!!!!

    waste_elite (June 4, 2002)

has anything decent ever been released on cleopatra? all they do is release embarassingly crappy music from has-been bands.
