In her almost non-existent spare time, my alter ego spends late nights going to gigs, writing about music, and otherwise behaving as if she doesn't have a very responsible day job and respectable home life. I believe that . . . It's impossible to be truly hip as the parent of a preschooler, but I'd rather be a great mother than a cool one. Children can have excellent taste in music as long as you don't corrupt them with Barney and Raffi. For example, my daughter loves the Hives, the Ramones, and Morrissey. (She plans on becoming a rock drummer, ballerina, and a firefighter . . . all at the same time.) Music can save your soul.
