It has been revealed that enigmatic Cure frontman Robert Smith will be collaborating with mainstream pop singer Ashlee Simpson for a song on her next album. Simpson is the younger sister of popular star / actress Jessica Simpson, and gained notoriety via an MTV reality series and subsequent pop singles. The singer is infamous for a lip-synching mix up that was broadcast live on Saturday Night Live in October of 2004. While performing at the 2005 Orange Bowl halftime show, Simpson was booed by a vast majority of the 70,000+ fans.

Pete Wentz of pop-punk stars Fall Out Boy and a reported "personal friend" of Simpson's, was rumored to be responsible for the pairing with Smith. Wentz, however, has denied the claims, stating "I doubt I had anything to do with it, 'cause they were friends since she was performing in Chicago. But I definately only have good things to say about Ash - I think the collaboration could be great."

Both artists are signed to Geffen Records, which could also play a role in Smith's involvement. You can check out the full story over at NME. The Cure last released The Cure in 2004.
