With the Bush victory in the recent US presidential elections, the future of the PunkVoter organization has been in question. Last month members of the organization (including Jello Biafra, NOFX's Fat Mike, San Francisco supervisor Matt Gonzalez, The Frisk's Jesse Luscious and others) got together in San Francisco to decide the organization's next steps. According to the Alternative Tentacles website "After helping to get more 18-24s to the polls than ever before- and halting the steady slide in the % of youth voters- in November's national US elections- Punk Voter is switching our focus." The organization will concentrate on four areas in the immediate future, from AT:

what the fuck do they mean by "true" campaign finance reform? if they honestly think they can do anything about that then these punks are a bit disillusioned. when money flows with the ease of water, it will find the smallest crack and burst the damn open. mccain/feingold gave a noble effort, but its a dead platform.

you know, i hate george bush and i am glad fat mike is doing something with punk voter now instead of just dropping it. BUT does no one realize that the democrats started the bill for a draft? it was defeated in congress, but was started by two democrats because right now as it stands rich conservatives have no reason to join the army- they don't need anyone to help pay for their college education, chances are they have trust funds. hence, the draft is created to target them. i just wish that some of these places (i know bright eyes is pushing the anti-draft stuff too) would do some research first. on top of that, if you get drafted, just say you're gay and you'll be all set, they seem to kick out all the gays.

Why Jello has anything to do with this is beyond me.....I guess he figures it's better than nothing. But this "punkvoter" thing is really too cutesy and tame to pose any real "threat" or change. They aren't pissing anyone off and the majority of the bands on their comps aren't even punk rock. I'm all for AT and Jello, and I think conservatives in general (both Republicans & Democrats) need to get a serious kick in the ass......but this certainly isn't it.
Someone (December 8, 2004)
You know assholes....just a thought, but instead of bitching and cutting some people down that are TRYING to do something, and have had some impact (you can argue amongst yourselves how big it was or how small it was, but it did exist), why don't you get off your ass and do something. At least these people are TRYING. Thats all that matters. Thats all you can really do. TRY to change things. When you stop trying you are just a useless lump of shit that is just in the way. So how about we stop bitching cause we didn't like their comps or think some of the bands/labels involved are annoying and at least be pleased that no matter what the political bent of this group is, or their faults may be, at least they are TRYING to do SOMETHING. I don't know kids, just a fucking thought.
Someone (December 8, 2004)
I dont know what they are talking about with the 18-24 year old age bracket, because thats shit. Every age group came out to vote more, the 18-24 came out less compared to every other age group so what the fuck are they talking about? If you look at 2000 compared to 2004 the actual percentage increase in 18-24 was less than every other age bracket, so good job Fat Mike you did absolutely nothing.
Someone (December 8, 2004)
I don't like Bush at all, but let's get real. There are three reasons the draft will not be reinstated in the foreseeable future.
1. We have plenty of reserves Bush can use to play war.
2. With all the modern technology involved in the armed forces it takes too long to train draftees, especially when morale would be so bad.
3. Supporting a draft would be political suicide for any Republican. Even the red-staters don't want to see a draft. When this came up for vote in the house only 2 congress people supported it, and they were both democrats.
Roe v. Wade won't be overturned because the justices reaching the end of their careers tend to be conservatives, so if Bush gets his way all that will happen is conservatives replace conservatives and if Arlen Specter (a Republican) has his way none of the replacements will be pro life (or at least not to the extent of overturning show rest of comment

Release more mediocre CDs for 14 year olds to buy now, and blindly follow and bash all republicans, causing them to register democrat for the 2008 election but still NOT show up to vote and instead bitch alot on that tuesday in november four years from now on punknews.org - jones the bones - stevejones8770@yahoo.com

Anyone read the "On the trail of Bin Laden" article in the new National Geographic? They'll never find him, that's if he's still alive.

Not that I really want to get involved in this thread, nor do I want to acknowledge most of the clowns that have commented, but all these post-election experts/critics beg the question. I think it was Minor Threat that asked it, "What the fuck have you done?"
Someone (December 8, 2004)
I love this so much, because right after the election 90% of the douche bags on here said, "Now that Bush won Punk Voter will probably disappear for another four years till the next election when they can sell more shitty comps.” Now they’ve regrouped and are back with a new agenda and new plans for reform and all 90% of you can still say is “They wont do anything, they should vote for a third party instead of the two major evil parties.”
Don’t get me wrong I love third parties and for everything but the presidential I voted third party BUT don’t you think pushing a third party president is a little ass backwards? Even if the third party wins the presidential seat they’d be dealing with the gridlock of a house and senate that’s 99.9% of the two parties (I believe there’s one independent in each, though that may not be true). So why not start from the ground up, t show rest of comment

I am smarter than Fat Mike. I voted for Bush. Fat Mike voted for Kerry. Think about it.
Someone (December 8, 2004)
Below this comment there will soon be roughly about 200 posts. Let the bitching begin!
Someone (December 8, 2004)
blinkrules, why don't you volunteer for the army a go to Iraq since you like Bush so much... Draft young Republicans.....I would support the draft if it was for young Republicans only.
Someone (December 8, 2004)
Those four areas of focus are great and all, but how about putting one more at the TOP of the list... work towards the IMPEACHMENT of Bush?!! Fuck, it's like shooting the feathers but not the bird with these guys...
Someone (December 8, 2004)
I just looked at the Conservative punk site for the first time --- Who the fuck are those bands on that site!?!?!? Yeah Punk Voter's philiosophy is basically "everyone but bush" and wanted Kerry to win and they had some very good bands on their side---> Social Distortion, Descendents, Sick Of It All, Rise Against, Dead Kennedys, etc But just look at the bands on the left that are also Anti-Bush/Republican/Conservative that don't support the Democrats either ---> Propagandhi, Leftover Crack, D.O.A., TSOL, Discharge, Conflict, The Business, etc The thought that there are people here claiming to be punk and supporting bush is a joke. Punk Rock was founded on left-wing ideals and still is today. No wonder there are no "conservative" punk bands (well Skrewdriver is pretty anti-gay and pro-fascist). Christ, 3 of the Ramones were on the left. No matter Joey and Johnny never got along. your lives are a sham. Go listen to Bill O'Reily or something
BizzleBrizzle (December 8, 2004)
There is going to be no draft you fucking retards. The draft bill in congress was started by a fucking democrat. Way to force all punks to be pro-choice... The last two are fine with me.

and i thought i couldn't stand punkvoter BEFORE the election.... at least they only had one goal there that i kinda agreed with, but this is too much.... vote libertarian...
darkstarm (December 8, 2004)
Good lord people. "They didn't do shit, so fuck them, blah blah blah." Let the group stick around. Anyone at Fat got any exact numbers on how many people registered to vote at the PunkVoter shows? Or how many Anti-Bush comps were sold? All of those things have an effect. And if PunkVoter keeps this up for the next four years you're looking at an orginzation that will be a force to contend with in terms of vote mobilization and trying to get the right message out.
LushJ (December 8, 2004)
Thanks for the comments, the knee-jerk anti-PV ones are getting old though. Criticize all you want, but action is better than sitting around like a lump on a log, typing away your youth. I don't care what you believe (left-right-center-whatever), but I do think that being apathetic is the antithesis of the music scene I love. So go join conservativepunk, moderatepunk, start your own group, but don't just let life/politics happen TO you.
I wanted to add 2 things to this thread.
1. PV was started as a broad-based liberal/left group, and a major attraction for participants like myself, a Green Party member, was the emphasis on issues and not on specific candidates. While PV veered towards highlighting the differences between Kerry and Bush towards the end of the campaign, it still stayed out of explicitly endorsing any candidate for legal and internal reasons. (If PV endorsed Kerry show rest of comment
Someone (December 8, 2004)
Just to get things straight.....there's a big difference between being a democrat and being a leftist or a liberal....some democrats may in fact be very leftist, but many aren't *cough* tipper gore *cough*. And yes, punk rock is deeply grounded in leftist politics....sure, right wing racist bullshit did heavily infilrate the scene from the start, but the best bands- Black Flag, Ramones, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, SS Decontrol, Reagan Youth, Fugazi, Bad Religion, The Damned, The Clash, The Dicks, 7 Seconds, Necros, DOA, Circle Jerks, Agent Orange, TSOL, etc. etc. were all anti-racism and at times almost radically leftist, which is really cool. And then look at the mostly shitty bands which supported racism and lame right wing bullshit- The Exploited, Skrewdriver, Fear (or so I've heard, not entirely positive on this one), and only a handful of others. Punk rock is a leftist idea
Someone (December 8, 2004)
Just as a heads up....Jello Biafra never really supported John Kerry or many Democrats either...he seems to attack all conservative ideals, which can be both Democratic and Republican. Afterall, Jello was the person who railed against fake "liberal" Tipper Gore. Jello knows his shit, maybe Fat Mike is a hardcore Democrat, but I don't see Biafra calling himself a "democrat".....he's registered Green anyway.
Someone (December 8, 2004)
the exploited never supported racism. Their singer Wattie before joining the band was just a shithead with fascist views. Nothing to do with the band mister someone

From the CCCO (Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors) website http://www.objector.org/:
Millions of people are worried and scared about resumption of the draft. CCCO’s offices are getting lots of calls and visits to our tables from people concerned about the draft affecting themselves, their children and grandchildren. It is widely felt that neither presidential candidate will touch the draft issue before the election, but that a draft could come in the spring. The Bush regime wants one, two, three, many imperial wars to match its fiasco in Iraq – where will it get the troops without a draft? Kerry wants 40,000 more troops but has repeatedly criticized the “backdoor draft” (see below). Where will he get the troops?
We at CCCO are opposed to resumption of a draft. The purpose of a draft is, and has always been, to show rest of comment

good call! I actually quoted that further up on the thread. Also, props for using the term "clowns" to describe them. I prefer calling people "assclowns" personally, but you get the point
SteveJonesTheRealBones (December 9, 2004)
i love how people are listing bands to show how lame conservative thought is and how punk is so leftist in nature. well, your right about punk being leftist, and the term conservative punk is fucking stupid, but its still not a very good argument. it pretty much just is saying that punk music is very immature and not well thought out and for naive kids (punks) . anyway, i dont know why alot of you guys have a problem with BUSH. i mean, he is just like kerry. in fact, he hasnt done anything a democrat wouldnt have done except maybe the gay marriage ban. but i have a problem with bush, and i am the only one here who should i think. bush ISNT conservative enough. he is practically a fucking liberal faggot - jones the bones - stevejones8770@yahoo.com |
