Jade Tree will be remastering and rereleasing three albums from Avail; Dixie, 4AM Friday, and Over The James will all contain bonus tracks as well as a fresh coat of paint, sound-wise. The band, according to their website, is "no longer working with [Lookout! Records]." Release dates and tracklistings will be available soon.

These guys are awesome live. They played the last great show at the Mason Jar (RIP). 1+ Reply

Lookout loses yet another piece of their catalog. That was a pretty cool legacy you guys over on adeline squandered. Good work.

Doesnt giving this band a 'fresh coat of paint, sound-wise' kinda defeat the purpose? Isn't that gritty southern feel part of their edge?

I love Avail. And its cool to see these releases getting the proper treatment they deserve. Not to churn the rumor mill, but from what I've heard from at least 3 bands that have worked with Lookout!, they've turned into money-hungry pricks. 5+ Replies

strange... it's only been *maybe* 7 years since 'over the james' came out right? usually reissues like this wait at least a decade... regardless, it was always a shock to me that these guys stayed on Lookout! as long as they did. Avail wipes their light beer off the floor with bands like Squirtgun and the Riverdales. I guess Ted Leo is now the "out of place" artist on Lookout! Anyways, great band, great albums, great guys. Usually I'd think "reissues are just for money" but if there's a band that deserves a little more than they're probably getting, it's Avail. 4+ Replies

Lookout! really seems to be dropping the ball lately. losing the S.W. catalog was bad enough but now Avail. they also don't seem to give a shit about the bands on their current roster unless they're Ted Leo. even bands that are no longer w/ the label get more attention then the current roster. i.e. The Donnas, Green Day... get your head out of your ass, Lookout! 3+ Replies

Over The James has perfect sound quality. I bought it used and it was probably the greatest deal I've ever gotten. 1+ Reply

1. "Over The James" is incredible. That's the record that made me a believer.
2. Re Lookout: Ha ha ha ha, another one bites the dust. I'd heard that there was going to be legal action involved as well, perhaps that's going on in the background, or has already been settled. Sorry if I sound chipper, it's the chuckle of the damned. It'll be a sad day when Lookout closes its doors, even with the self-inflicted damage involved. I'm also very thankful not to be financially connected to them anymore, save a few compilations that don't sell.
To be fair, when The Criminals finally took our record back (not that anyone else wanted it), Chrisser was very helpful in terms of the physical stock (50 LPs, no CDs) and the masters/art. The royalties owed was more difficult, not surprisingly, but even that came out pretty much alright. Of course, Lookout didn't owe our band much, our debt show rest of comment 5+ Replies

Wow, that's both weird and cool. Anyhow, I don't own Over the James and 4 AM Friday, and Jade Tree being my favorite label, it only makes sense that I order those albums from them. -Chinatown 5+ Replies

Sweet! Now maybe Avail will the get the recognition they deserve for being such a great band.
TheNightProwler (March 1, 2005)
I hope The Mr. T Experience leaves Lookout next because it doesn't seem like Lookout did shit to promote their last record and it was really good so I'm sure any other label could have done a better job to bring attention to it. 2+ Replies

It started with the Donnas, a terrible band to boot. I remember walking by the lookout store when Over The James just came out and you couldn't find a shred of info about that awesome disc. It was nothing but Donnas, Donnas, Donnas. Now they have Ted Leo.

um . . . over the james already sounds really clean. remastering dixie and 4am Friday would be stupid because part of the charm is the gruff recording quality. hey AVAIL (one of my favorite bands of all time) DON'T REMASTER THIS SHIT IF YOU NEED THE MONEY SO BAD WORK HARDER AND PUT OUT A GOOD RECORD AGAIN! one wrench and that other one, porch stories or whatever SUCKED 6+ Replies

I think Lookout trying to do something different msuically isn't a bad thing. And since I'm not avail and I don't work at lookout I have no idea what is going on. Hopefully it's the best for everyone. Ted Leo is the man, but bands like COmmunique?? Please stop trying to be so cool. It's bothersome. 1+ Reply

more proof that jade tree is one of the best labels around. dixie > over the james 3+ Replies

Just in case anybody didnt know, Lookout changed management around 96. So the people who put out great stuff by Op ivy, screeching weasel, avail and other good stuff, have been long gone.

are they gonna reissue on vinyl, or just CD? because the only reason I care is if I can get a copy of 4AM Friday on vinyl without having to get an ebay account. I don't like the idea of "bonus songs", though. They usually destroy the flow of the album, especially when placed at the end. Hoo biddy, I hope they don't just throw some demo tracks on the end of Dixie or James. I hope they don't change too much in remastering, because 4AM and James are definitely fine as-is, soundwise. They're probably just gonna make it a little louder. There's the potential for some horrible damage done to classic albums in this, and theres the potential for them to become even better. - americanidle 3+ Replies

For what it's worth, I've picked up the remastered versions of a few classics that have gone by the wayside over the years (No Control, Circa Now, 1039 Smoothed Out) and all of them have been exceptional. Usually remastering just means increasing the overall clarity of the sound without changing the way the music really sounds... if that makes sense. 1+ Reply

AVAIL deserves anything they can get. They had their chance to go bigger and they refused to take it. Due to this, they have probably had a huge drop off of fans staying current with what they have been doing. A fresh new coat may open up the eyes and ears to a lot of these people of what they have been missing. The extra tracks that will be thrown on will be some of the live albums. I dont think there is much, if anything, new/unreleased that will be on the remastered albums. If they are pulling from Lookout! then there must be a damn good reason. AVAIL has been a damn hard working band and has always stayed true to their roots. I support the decision for the change and I hope it helps in some way or another. 2+ Replies

AVAIL is awesome. I saw them with Propagandhi right after "Today's Empires..." came out and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Their live show rips it up. Considering how good they were then and how lame Strike Anywhere was a few weeks ago, I think there are plenty of us who would like to see a little switcheroo take place regarding the Asskicking Stage. And this way we'll keep the geographic diversity of the lineup, by keeping a Virginian band on the lineup. 2+ Replies

ways lookout can redeem itself: 1) re-release the corrupted morals disco on cd. 2) finally re-release the thrasher skate rock albums. 3) sign some pop punk bands! fuck the trends. 4) stop being involved with shit like dj'ing at the lame ass arrow bar. 1+ Reply

and what about Black Cat Music. did anyone see any press for 'October, November'? did you see the band's video on mtv? did you know they even toured in support of the album? and if you wanted to right now could you go down to your favorite record store and buy the album. i'm guessing "no" to all of these. Lookout! has some amazing bands on their roster right now. they need to get their priorities straight.
Someone (March 1, 2005)
repressing dixie and 4am is a great idea... remastering any of these is a stupid idea
Someone (March 1, 2005)
why is there even a label called "lookout records" anymore anyhow? stop dragging the name through the mud.. it's nothing like it was, and most everyone is on to new things I REPEAT - STOP DRAGGING LOOKOUT RECORDS THROUGH THE MUD AND LET IT DIE!!! oh wait.. it's been dead for a long time

Good for Jade Tree, I'll probably pick all these up since I lost the originals I owned. 2+ Replies
