has been launched to organize the moment to protect the legendary CBGB's nightclub. The site promises to provide updates on the status of the project, and provides a petition,. posters as well as tool to write a letter to a few dozen New York City newspapers.
The legendary NYC club which played home to bands like the Ramones, Patti Smith, Blondie, Television and literally hundreds of others artists through the years may be forced to close its doors. The situation arose due to a dispute with Bowery Residents Committee which holds a 45-year lease on the building. CBGB's is their lone commercial tenant; their rent feud dates back five years, when the committee went to court to collect more than $300,000 in back rent from the club CBGB (27 comments)

I guess if you're not from NY or have never been to NYC then you dont really care but it is a part of NYC history and music history in general. it deserves to be preserved. 3+ Replies

I doubt it'll ever happen, but this is the chance, the moment, and the opportunity for bands nation wide, or hell even a good indie record-label nation wide to stand up and show some solidarity. Ok, so they don't want to lease it back to CBGB's in its current state. This is where someone who has made a killing off the name and tradition of punk to give a little back. I am not talking about Iggy, I am not talking about Patti, or any of them, they gave their part already. What needs to happen is for the people who have taken everything from punk, Blink, New Found Glory(Travis especially), Yellow Card and all those other "successful" major label, MTV whoring stadium rocking "musicians" to finally give back. I can not say I have all the answers, or that anyone will in fact do anything, but this is an institution that has all the same marks of things like Motown, the G show rest of comment 5+ Replies

It appears to me that Bowery Residents' Committee is less concerned with the history of punk rock than they are providing the homeless with, uh, homes, drug treatment, and jobs. Their cause strikes me as infinitely more worthy than helping Hilly pay his back rent. CBGB's has affirmed it's place in punk rock history, whether it shuts down or not. We certainly don't need to help keep business people in business just because of what once happened there. 1+ Reply

Can we start a campaign to kill all the fashion whores wearing the CBGB shirts they got at hot topic or urban outfitters? That might be just as worthwhile.
