Sex Pistols, Blondie among 2006 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have announced the inductees for the class of 2006. The five inductees in the artist category are the Sex Pistols, Blondie, Miles Davis, Black Sabbath, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The Hall of Fame Foundation will hold its induction ceremony March 13 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan.

Inductees in recent years have included the Ramones and the Clash.

Artists are eligible after at least 25 years have passed since their first record was released.

I think the Ramones wouldn't have gotten in when they did if Joey didn't happen to die. So hopefully they won't wait for Ozzy to die before Sabbath get in there

In other news I believe Dio should head up Sabbaths induction perfromance. I know, everyone says Ozzy era Sabbath is better. But I've seen both in recent years and while both have aged, Dio appears not to have lost his fucking mind. If they honestly want to televise and put down in history that the Black Sabbath they want remembered, was headed up by a mumbeling, barely mobile, retard, that's their business. However, we all know Dio has kept to the rock though out the years. -Dante

Technically, they are eligible ("Fresh Fruit" came out in 1980) but if they ever even made it on the ballot, I'd be shocked. No record label execs would vote them in anyway.

Years ago, I went to a Jazz record shop in London, ON and asked what a good record would be to start my jazz collection with. The guy gave me Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue," and he was right, that record is fucking amazing still. b.

Uh, poser/fringe/fake punk has been around since the late 70's. Bands like Coheed and Cambria and Mars Volta don't even attempt to masquerade as "punk" bands. I'm pretty sure Coheed and Cambria wish they were a heavy metal band and that Mars Volta think they're indie rock. So, really... In the long run, nothing's changed much, but we still have a scene that works contrary to that, even if it is super underground these days. -Will

is it just me or does anyone else think that the sex pistols are really overrated? don't get me wrong i love "nevermind the bollocks" but they never did anything after that. they went to tour the US and then broke up before finishing the tour. on the other hand, it would be kinda interesting is see a band that existed soley as a FU to the establishemnt get in. i wonder what johnny's speach will be like?

They were twenty year old fuck ups who banged out their first album while being jerked around by managers and whatever else. I don't think you should expect them to be "highly rated" from an artistic standpoint at all. The Pistols in their time and place were important, particularly in how they affected the culture of music as a whole. To sit down way after the fact and compare them to careers of all the bands that came in their wake isn't an "apples to apples" comparison. -adam

YEP! I AGREE!!!! they are one of the most overrated bands in history. They were the "backstreet boys" of punk because their manager had a great idea and auditioned some people and ended up with the Sex Pistols. I don't believe in bringing in "manufactured" bands into the hall of fame and on top of that, only 1 studio album and 2 years in existence and the music was alright, not great. VERY OVERRATED indeed!

Fuck man, all you dumbasses keep commenting on how The Sex Pistols don't deserve the spot because they were brought together by their manager, Glen Matlock, but what you dumbasses fail to know that soon after forming The Sex Pistols fired Matlock and that on the album Johnny Rotten wrote all the lyrics and Steve Jones wrote all the guitar/bass parts. So thier manager didn't didn't shit except for get them together, big fucking deal. The music is still all them.

i personally don't think Blondie should be inducted into the hall of fame because she is a sell out. She went mainstream and basically screwed over the true punks. now about the sex pistols...they just don't deserve it. punk is about anarchy, protesting, riots, drinking, standing up for what you believe in. The sex pistols have none of that. The only TRUE punk band is the Clash. JOE STRUMMER was very involved with politics and foreign affairs. Just listen to their songs and then you will know true punk. Blondie was part of the CBGB crowds but they were never really punks and they have never claimed to be punk. Their sound was always more more pop-oriented and they were very much into exploring other genres, like rap, disco, funk, reggae, which made them grow unlike many other punk and new wave bands. So, yeah, Blondie and Debbie Harry may have sold out, but so did the rest of the fucking scene. Blondie is a group of very talented musicians and deserve the spot. And you say The Sex Pistols don't have any characteristics that punk holds, (By the way, all those "guidelines" are bullshit except for standing up for yourself. Punk is about standing up for yourself and self-expression. Thats why The Clash can play reggea and funk and still be punk.) but The Sex Pistols did stand up for themselves when they wrote "God Save The Queen." Johnny Rotten: "You don't write a song like 'God Save the Queen' because you hate the Queen, you write a song like 'God Save the Queen' because you love your country and you hate the way it's being treated." Thats punk by my books. And also, in order to make it into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of fame you need to have done something that would forever change music, especially rock 'n' roll. The Sex Pistols played a MAJOR role in getting the punk scene recognized and because of them many future punk bands were formed. For example, Joe Strummer quit The 101er's in order to start a band that sounded like the new music movement that was going on after he went to a punk show with Mick Jones. The movement was punk and the band that played that night that caused Strummer and Jones to quit their bands to start a punk band (The Clash) was The Sex Pistols. Still think punk would be the same without them?

Iggy pop idolizes her the talking heads b52's rem even patti smith now admits their genius and you being a true punk know better... The clash rock.. the pistols deserve it -- plain and simple. and as for the clash "not selling out" -- read their cbs contract and see whether or not they sold out. regardless, both bands are awesome and have provided 2 generations of music that still changes lives. muisc w/out the pistols is much more boring.
