A seemingly innocuous This Bike is a Pipe Bomb sticker was enough to put Ohio University on high alert this morning.
Apparently, the sticker, placed - appropriately enough - on a bike, was sufficient to get both campus police and the bomb squad involved. According to local media, university police found a nondescript mountain bike with the Plan-It X act's sticker on it, and took it literally. The school closed four buildings, police blocked streets around the Oasis restaurant, the fire department brought in off-duty firefighters, and the Columbus fire department's bomb squad was called in. The bomb experts attacked the bike with a high-pressure spray of water, then pried it open with a hydraulic tool and found no bomb inside. As for the band, they most recently released Three Way Tie For A Fifth on Plan-It X and No Idea Records. Plan-It-X Records (167 comments)

So your a terrorist right? and the first thing you do to get your message across is put a bomb in a bike and leave it on a university campus? They campus police didn't think that one through, i'm sure higher targets would be on the aggenda from terrorists. Fucking funny story though, i'll give you that. Oh yeah great band. 1+ Reply

so so precious just goes to show you how over zealous american "authority" has become. It's bad in Canada but not THAT bad! highly amusing tho.
Someone (March 2, 2006)
If I was a terrorist, I'd put stickers on my bombs that say 'this bomb is a bike'....and the police would say "don't worry, no need to be alarmed...we thought this was a bomb, but it's clearly just a harmless bike". 3+ Replies

Any publicity is good publicity. So, in all this shananaginery never did the bike owner step up and go, "Wait, that's a band, and that's my bike"? Someone owes that dude a bike. -Dante 2+ Replies

At my college, when there was a bomb threat, they moved all the students into classrooms in the next building over.
iheartagainstme (March 2, 2006)
that isn't the first time that has happened. i have that sticker on my bike i hope it happens to me.
FightToLive (March 2, 2006)
Wow, apparentally there are no punks at OU...Even if a bomb was in a bike that was probably at least 50 feet away from a building, it wouldn't have done much damage. 1+ Reply
Scruffy (March 2, 2006)
I went to OU. Still live in Athens. The bassist in my band (also known as Pope Skeletor around these here parts) called me at work to tell me he heard this on NPR this morning. So far as I've heard, I'm not even sure the cops realize that it's a band sticker yet. You'd think the fact that the sticker was probably vinyl would clue them in that it wasn't actually a bomb, because, really, who orders one specially made vinyl sticker to alert the world to their bomb? It's hilarious. I've been laughing to myself all day. I'll be sure to update when and if I hear anything. Even if the cops never find out whose bike it was or there's no more reporting on it, I'm pretty sure I probably know this person, whoever it was.
Someone (March 2, 2006)
At my university when there's a bomb threat we have to evacuate to the graveyard over the road....well i guess it's appropriate.

I really wanted to submit this as news. I go to class in one of the buildings that was closed. One of the funniest things I've heard in a long time. 3+ Replies

Someone (March 2, 2006)
Since this band rules, they should get the bikes' owner a new bike, because not having a bike sucks, but it probably sucks more due to the fact that his or her bike is now in pieces due to a inept human that thinks stickers hold literal meaning... well some do... push to open.... pull to open... wow... i killed my own comment... 1+ Reply

Someone (March 2, 2006)
I'm surprised that everyone thinks this is totally stupid. Do you really expect campus security to know who this band is? And, assuming they don't, keep in mind that the Bush administration has been pumping fear into the American public for five straight years. I think there's a lot of "better safe than sorry" behind this, which is okay in my book. If someone's not sure that something's a bomb, I'd rather let someone else test it. And for those of you who think an attacker wouldn't say what he/she is going to attack... have you not seen the videos where Bin Laden threatens to attack particular buildings or cities? Yeah, I think it's funny and silly, 'cause I've heard of the band. Just sayin'... 7+ Replies

I just wanna know one thing. If someone actually made a pipebomb, and wanted it to blow shit up, would they leave it out and actually label it "THIS IS A PIPE BOMB"? that's like having a big red self destruct button front and center on a 757. 2+ Replies

hold up people talking enormous shit on the police and university staff and etc. they pretty much HAD to do this. if they didnt and there was a bomb and someone admittedly noticed it, the shit storm would never end. and to all the people saying , "but who would label the pipe bomb they made?" if you dont think america has dumbass kids that would label a pipe bomb and leave it in the open before they detonated it, then you are naive and dont know the kind of hooligans we have here, yes, hooligans

they included those classic "CAR BOMB" stickers in the Escape From Noise record. nothing became of those? that seems like it would cause a LOT more trouble. go figure. if you don't know what i am talking about, you can see them here: http://negativland.com/nmol/negmisc.html scroll down to the stickers. 1+ Reply

thats hilarious. the level of fear in the US is fuckin amazing, I'm gonna put one of those stickers on my car.
Someone (March 3, 2006)
Haha, people are stupid, etc. No. It was a bike...with a sticker on it...that said, "This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb." Now, suppose you were campus security and you saw it. Chances are, you've never heard of these guys. But you're probably not stupid, either, and you're guessing that it's just a band sticker or something. You could probably just leave it alone and go about your day. But what if it's not just a band sticker? What if it's a threat? Do you really want to be the guy who could've stopped a terrorist attack but didn't? Of course not. So you call for backup and tear the bike apart. And then you get ridiculed by disturbingly short-sighted idiots on a punk music forum. Yeah, I think the story is pretty ridiculous, but you guys' responses are even worse. 3+ Replies
