Billboard is reporting that The Replacements have reunited to record their first new material in more than 16 years.
Singer/guitarist Paul Westerberg, bassist Tommy Stinson and drummer Chris Mars convened in the band's Minneapolis hometown to record two Westerberg-penned songs: "Message to the Boys" and "Pool & Dive." The tracks will appear on the recently announced greatest hits disc titled Do You Know Who I Think I Was? The Best of Replacements which is due out May 23rd. Session drummer Josh Freese played drums on the songs while Mars contributed backing vocals. Though never successful in the mainstream, the loved and influential band, which formed in 1979, released seven albums and helped define the then fledgling Minneapolis punk rock scene along with Hüsker Dü and Soul Asylum . this is good news, but sketchy grammaring w/ the sentence about Josh Freese, so I'm assuming he played drums while Mars only did backup vocals? 6+ Replies

"Pleased to Meet Me" is kind of underwhelming but the last two tracks make it so worth it. This is good news. 1+ Reply

Incomplete sentence in the third paragraph. Hopefully this will rule. This band was revolutionary.

Anyone see Alkaline Trio on Craig Ferguson or whatever....I love the trio but that was a pretty lame performance they played "Burn"...Skiba was wearing black lipstick. 3+ Replies

A Smiths reunion wouldn't be exciting if Johnny and Mozzy didn't get back into bed together, and I always felt the same way about Westerberg and Stinson. I like the post-Stinson albums, but you know, a reunion is supposed to be a bigger deal. Especially when you're just recording two songs -- you can't tell me it's all for the art if they're going to quit so soon. 3+ Replies

What about the boxed set that's been talked about on this site just earlier this week? Screw the hits CD, I want the box damnit!

I can't decide if this is awesome or just a bad idea. The geek in me says it's frickin' awesome, though.

I will look forward to hearing these new tunes, I always loved The Replacements and got to see them live a few times. I'm a little bummed hearing that Chris did not play the drumes on the tracks though.
