Trailer for Germs biopic, "What We Do Is Secret"

The Rhino Films production of What We Do Is Secret has posted the trailer from the movie.

The film aims to document the life and untimely death of Germs vocalist Darby Crash. While it does not cover his entire life, the movie focuses on Crash's "five-year plan" to become a legend before comitting suicide in 1980. To ensure that the film was true to the story, Director Roger Grossman enlisted the help ex-Germs guitarist Pat Smear, as well as members of Crash's family and others involved in the late '70s/early '80s Hollywood punk scene,

Playing Crash is actor Shane West who is best known from his role on ER. Rick Gonzalez will play Smear, and many other figures from the time will be included in the film, including Captain Sensible and Penelope Spheeris. Bands from the era are also represented in the film, with The Bronx filling in for legendary hardcore act Black Flag.

Yeah, I'm super excited and this trailer just solidifies it. Shane was extremely convincing fronting the "Germs Return" when I saw them. and the attention to detail in the trailer is nuts. The stuff from The Decline is almost exact and the Okie Dogs part (at least from pictures and video footage I've seen) is dead on.

The only thing is that his voice isn't nearly whiney enough but that's a small worry.

I agree. I'm super excited about this. I saw them @ Riot Fest and to my suprise they kicked ass. I'm very excited about this.

Does Shane West piss any Germs fans off? He doesn't seem like the kind of guy that Germs fans would be ok with playing Darby.

I saw them a few weeks ago at an unannounced show and yeah, he caught a lot of shit. One guy jumped on stage and kicked him, someone else threw beer. To me, it just made the show that much more authentic. Punk bands should get abuse.

Personally, I think West did a good job playing a thankless role. It was a pretty good example of method acting, and the songs sounded good and I'm amazed that Bolles can keep up on drums after all these years. Lorna just looked happy to be playing again--she was all smiles.

I'm wondering now if the movie is going to get the little little details, like Darby was originally Bobby Pyn, or that Belinda Carlislle (sp?) from the Go-Go's was the band's drummer for a week.

I've been disappointed with all the OLN/NBC broadcasters except Doc and John Davidson and Jim Jackson (although I don't think he's done any playoff games). Anyone catch any of P.J. Stock's broadcasts? He was one of my favorite players, but broadcasting... ouch.

so there's a 3rd grade social studies teacher down in Florida who is part of the US Bikini Team, and has some nice pics up, and parents were having a fit...all I know is I had no teachers like this. What the fuck, all these kids banging their teachers, teachers posing half nude on the net...where was all this in the 80s?!?

I've never really seen a decent punk movie, and I don't really like biopics, so I pretty much assumed this would be dog shit. But this actually looks pretty good.

The only good part about Suburbia is the D.I. concert scene (and no I'm not saying that because of the girl getting her clothes ripped off. I'm just a huge D.I. fan), other than that its a pretty terrible movie.

As for Repo Man, I haven't seen that in a long-ass time. The only thing I remember about it is that the circle jerks play a lounge band in one scene and they play "Six Pack" at one point. I don't think I liked it, though I can't remember why.

you didn't like repo man because after the first 45 minutes it just gets fucking weird. as far as suburbia i thought all the music scenes were pretty good. i like TSOLs the most even though i like the vandals more as a band. its a decent movie at least.

yeah, I'm with you. The first half of Repo Man was hilarious and I was thinking 'holy crap, this is totaly what I was expecting' but then it got too out there for me.

My favorite TSOL song ever is the version of Wash Away from the Suburbia soundtack. Ron Emory's guitar sounds like it's talking to you on that solo and then it melts into the keyboards so seemlessly. It's absolutely perfect.

i'd really like to see this, for some reason, even after watching that trailer. i'd suggest any of you who haven't seen Decline of Western Civilization or read We've Got the Nuetron Bomb to check those out too. definetly unique looks in to L.A. punk, and into the germs.

i hope i'm not the only person that thinks this but as much as the germs deserve a movie, isn't it kind of wrong to make a movie out of them. now every 10 year old kid will have MIA and having a germs burn will be "the new blue". on a side note, i would like to see this but i hope it's not in every movie theatre because well... maybe i'm just paranoid.

i get the feeling that ten year old kids won't be emulating a gay, suicidal heroin addict. but we'll see. i just don't think the germs music is accesible enough for the whole thing to get out of hand.

Batman is pretty bad-ass, but he's simply human. That is what makes him rad - he IS just human, and he doesn't have any super powers, other than being really really really fucking pissed and tough...but Wolverine could get shot 56 times and heal...now THAT is badass. Wolverine > Batman...but just barely.

Batman is a better fight, smarter, and faster. He always figures out a way to disable his opponents weaknesses and exploits that. That's what makes him badass.

But if healing factor is badass, I would say Deathstroke>Wolverine.

Getting this out to as many people as possible is a good thing. People don't even realize that punk rock is a genre of music, they have never even heard it before. They have heard terrible bands like new found glory and my chemical romance who aren't even punk rock. I want everyone to see this movie.

i guess that darby would find the whole freaking out over his band's "return" with an actor as the singer pretty funny. if shane is portraying him accurately, and i'm sure he is, he seemed like one with a sense of humor about music.

I can't wait for this movie to come out. The Germs were one of my favorite bands when I was younder and back in high school I soaked up as much L.A. old school punk as I could. I've tried to read up on this flick as much as possible and some of the things that kept coming up while I was getting info were how involved in punk rock the people behind the movie were and how involved the surviving members of The Germs were. All of that is evident in the trailer.

I liked it. It goes pretty in depth in his life and it has a lot of great interviews. I say get it if you have the chance.
