Well, The Effigies are awesome. You need to check out the "Remains Nonviewable" collection on Touch and Go. They're one of the best of the really old Chicago scene and got back together about two years ago. This'll be my fifth time (and I never thought I'd ever get to see 'em) seeing them since then and it's always great. I can't find any MP3s online, but seriously check them out.

I think that it can be that, but there's another thing that happens more often.
A lot of people, after a while of listening to music, decide to be open-minded. To them, this means branching out, accepting everything. A good idea in theory, but it leads to people listening to a lot of crap because they're trying to like everything.
Ask that Son, Ambulance CD in a box in my basement, or the two Everclear CDs right beside it!

Note: I am not saying this is the case with any of the "Someone"'s posting in this section of the thread. I am consider this a different discussion.

Is he a BAD drummer? Not by any means. But, it's Rancid, there are probably 6000 better drummers they could have found. With that said, I never found Reed to be a great drummer by any means either.

As far as Steinecker being ex-Used, I think the problem lies with the fact that Rancid are pioneers of modern punk rock music. Sure, they have lost some credibility over the years (that fucking Fall Back Down video...) but they are still very vital to the current state of the modern punk scene, and have roots in one of the most influental punk bands ever.

I don't know if I'd use the word "vital" to describe Rancid in 2006. Were the Clash vital to punk rock in 1984? Were the Ramones vital to punk rock in 1988? They might be as popular or as well known as they ever were but their peak glory days were a decade ago. And there's a reason their setlists are always heavy on Let's Go and AOCTW. We all know it and they know it too.

And I'm aware that you don't have to do anything technical on an album to be a good drummer - it's not like Bill Stevenson does anything insanely impressive on the latest Lemonheads disc (at least that I remember) but you can just tell that he's a good drummer. I like his stuff. "I Gotcha" has to be one of the best Neptunes track to come out this year.

I don't think people are shocked because of the drumming prowess. For me, at least, it's the surprise of the band chemistry being shaken up like that. Right or wrong, people grow up with/become attached to bands -- music is something that people take so personally -- that a shakeup in such a long-standing lineup is a surprie.

the drums werent that impressive but he did the job. rancid was a bass band not a drum band. thats weak to have a line up change after so many years. kinda sad.

I always thought Brett had a unique, rock n' roll style. His drumming style had more in common with a rockabilly band (listen to the fills) than a standard punk/hardcore band. It worked with Rancid.

I mean, Ringo wasn't the best drummer ever, but it worked for the fucking Beatles, y'know?

i take issue with the "even as a punk drummer" statement because i think there are a lot of drummers in punk who are really creative and talented. I'm much less impressed with punk guitar but punk drums rank up there with some of the best.

Oh don't even. Sorry to hear this myself, but Brett Reed was sadly the only dispensible member of the band, he had no personality attachment with the fans and didn't write the music. Obviously they wouldn't continue if Matt, Tim or Lars quit, although this could quite possibly be their last album.

Either way, it's not the same as the Misfits without fucking Glenn Danzig.

Rancid is definitley Brandon's favorite band. He knows his shit. He was one of the originals in The Used and He is a good drummer. It's just a shock, like you said, because it's not going to be the same four guys that we've gotten used to.

I know its not Branden's fucking fault-Im not stupid. I was hoewver ovbiously really fucking bitter- still am and know I'm ignorantly taking it out on him. Second of all, Yeha Rancid has changed my life and means so much to me so I cried. Lastly, why do you care if someone is upset about this or not? So suck it up? Fuck you I'll be bitter about it if I want to. Yes I am way way way more happy that they didnt break up rather than replacing Brett but still I heard about this like not even a week ago and theyve been my favorite band for 5 years (yeah theirs others who theyve been their favorite band for way more) but I discovered them in a time where I learned a lot of new things in my life ans discovered a lot being as it is im onyl 15 now so the way they impacted me is immense. He's a drummer. People need to understand that they are the most easily replaceable member of a band. You REALLY don't have to be that good to play drums in a punk band like Rancid. Bass, snare, bass bass snare. Its not rocket science.

Yes there are some great drummers with their own style in punk bands, but Rancid's drumming was never all that inspired. There, I said it.

Yes drummers a replaceable but when someone has been around that long and can play the songs in his sleep why would you want to replace him? Hey someone seeing the Clash tendencie? First get rid of the drummer (Topper/Reed) ... maybe later they get rid of a guitarplayer (Mick/Lars) then they do an album that really sucks with other members except for Tim and Matt, then they quit.

I also think that The Transplants albums are an excuse for Tim to do a "Sandinista" album.
