BUY NOTHING DAY
Buy nothing this November 24th!
As many of you already know, the day after Thanksgiving is traditionally the start of the Holiday Shopping Season. It is also what has come to be known as BUY NOTHING DAY. On this day, November 24th, we remember that no one was born to shop; we make a small choice to participate by not participating. Judging by the huge successes seen all across the globe last year – with thousands of activists and fed-up citizens taking part in dozens of countries – this year's festival of restraint could be the biggest yet. !
BUY NOTHING DAY is a protest of everything that is wrong with consumerist Western culture. The day after Thanksgiving was chosen for BUY NOTHING DAY because the advertising and retail industries have hyped it as THE shopping day for the Holiday season for so long that it is difficult to separate the two. Instead of spending money on this day that has for years been associated with little but the start of a month-long spending spree, ADBUSTERS encourages all of us, at a minimum, to buy nothing at all, all day long, on November 24th, 2006. Regular people and activists all over the world have taken this idea and have run with it, staging protests, teach-ins, sit-ins, leafleting at malls and setting up "BUY NOTHING" shops that have nothing for sale in order to educate people about BUY NOTHING DAY. !
For the past several years, Anti-Flag has joining the multitude of activists worldwide that are joining in the BUY NOTHING DAY movement and encourage you to do the same. On November 24th the A-F Records site will be observing BUY NOTHING DAY. The catalog will be taken down and nothing will be sold. !
We have compiled a list of different suggestions of activities we all can do instead of senselessly spending money. The idea isn't that we do every single one of these suggestions, because there are too many for most people to do in the next couple of weeks! We're just trying to provide creative alternatives to automatically spending money. Some of these ideas will appeal to you and some won't, so take what works for you and forget the rest. Maybe some of you will take it a step further and organize an event for BUY NOTHING DAY. !
Don't get us wrong: there's nothing wrong with celebrating, and there's certainly nothing wrong with giving and receiving presents, but there's definitely more to life than the spending and shopping orgy that has become so embedded in our culture. All we're trying to do is underscore that material possessions are just things. They are nice to have, and some are necessary to have (like shelter and clothing), but they shouldn't be more important than people, and our relationships with one another. !
Things to do instead of shopping on November 24th, Buy Nothing Day:
-Volunteer with an organization/charity that you support.
-Pass out flyers to educate people about Buy Nothing Day.
-Stage an event (protest, reading, teach-in, etc.) to educate people about Buy Nothing Day!
-Read a book.
-Take your dog for a walk.
-Adopt a pet from your local animal shelter and save a life!
-Check out your public library… it's better than a bookstore - it's free!
- Sign the petition at MilitaryFreezone.org
-Write a letter to your federal and state Senators and Representatives about an issue that is important to you (war, poverty, youth, education, gun control, corporate corruption & accountability, military spending, the environment, reproductive choice, and anything else you can think of!)
-Dance, exercise, and/or meditate.
-Tell someone that you love them.
-Laugh!
-Sleep… most Americans are chronically sleep-deprived!
-Ride a bike.
-Learn how to cook or bake.
-Clean out your closet and give your cast offs to Goodwill or The Salvation Army.
-Organize a blanket drive for a local homeless shelter
-Give someone a hug. Hugs are good for the immune system!
-Rake the yard… time is running out! And build a leaf fort while you're at it.
-Write a letter to a friend.
-Begin to learn an instrument.
-Change your fish tank's water – fish like breathing clean water, y'know?
-Get to know one of your neighbors that you've never spoken to before.
-Begin learning another language.
-Offer to baby sit
-Facilitate a dialog between youth and the elders
-Soak in a soothing bath
-Quit smoking if you do – you'll feel better and live longer!
-Start writing the next Great American novel
-Start a 'zine, or contribute to one.
-Start a yoga practice. You'll be able to twist like a pretzel in no time!
-Make a mix tape or CD for a friend

Anti-Flag has given their vocal support to the annual "Buy Nothing Day". The event is supported internationally, and is observed the day after Thanksgiving (November 24), which is known to be the busiest shopping day of the year. The idea came to be as a response against the constant barrage of media and marketing blitzes, aimed at encouraging consumers to constantly spend money on items for no specific reason.

I am for the idea, however, to say that this will be ineffective on a large scale would be an understatement! I few people refusing to spend money on black Friday isn't going to do anything to bring down capitalism or subvert large corporations. 1+ Reply

Every time that something a little progressive gets posted, such as an animal rights topic or in this case, an attempt to take a stand against the huge consumerist movement that occurs an a grand American sized scale each year the day after thanksgiving, it seems that no one gets behind it. Its a bit disheartening to see the overwhelming majority of "punks" seeing no point in taking a stand in general. Most of the comments so far on this post have been pretty negative and not really proposing an alternative to the buy nothing philosophy being reported, although there appears to be a lot of opposition to the idea itself. So whats the alternative? Buy something that day? I think if enough people in the "punk community" exercised a little cohesive political action, then we wouldn't have to be concerned with a good idea, or cause, producing no discernible effect. Hey, let's all do something by doing nothing, yeah that will show them!!!
Shut the fuck up and try actually doing something meaningful for a change. I think people fighting at stores for super sale products is stupid but hey not everyone does it. What better way to bring the Year of Global Warming to a close than to point people in the direction of real and effective alternatives to the unbridled consumption that has created this quagmire? Yeah because buying nothing is really going to bring awareness to global warming. Oh great so a few people didn’t use gasoline for one day because they didn't drive to the mall, whoop de shit. How about actually going out and "REASONABLY" informing the public about issues and alternative fuels? All these stupid “rally to buy nothing” things do is to stroke the ego of the people who participate in them to show rest of comment
Scruffy (November 13, 2006)
Scott is dead on. This is just like one-day gas strikes. Even if every single soul in America refused to buy things on this day, they'd still buy everything on all the days surrounding it. Not buying gas for one day won't change anything. Convincing a lot of people to sell their cars and stop using gas altogether would. SImilarly, refraining from buying anything on one day won't change anything. Changing your routine holiday buying habits would. Businesses aren't broken in a day. If they get your money the next day, they still get your money. Protests that only make a statement work in politics. The government, sometimes, will see the statement and it can affect polls and policy. Protesting something economical, when your only achievement is a statement doesn't change a thing if the business owners are still ending up with the same money at the end of the year show rest of comment 3+ Replies

I think it's kind of cool that Anti-Flag is shutting down their online catalog in solidarity with this. I've always had mixed reactions to the strategy of Buy Nothing Day, but at least this shows that AF is willing to make some sacrafices. I'm assuming that Adbusters (who initiated BND) shuts down their online store that day, too. Does anyone know for sure?

sigghhh. Almost every single one of you misses the complete point of Buy Nothing Day..It doesn't matter whether it stops our entire capitalist economy at once or not. The point is that everyone that participates is trying to make it known to others that our society is so overwhelmingly consumed with constantly spending money on useless shit. Of course we're not going to change very much just by not shopping for one day. It's about making people aware that our society is shopping-crazed. I'm tired off all you so-called punks. I think one benefit of Buy-Nothing Day is that by participating, people realize just how much of our lives are dependent upon monetary exchanges. As was mentioned, though, this could take place on any day. At the same time, I think there's something to be said for not shopping on that Friday. I avoid it for my own sanity and to try not to add fuel to the conflagration of consumerism. However, as a political statement, I question what is hoped to be accomplished. That's especially true for people who hold rallies or demonstrations that day. I understand the fact that there are a lot of shoppers to hear your message, but I doubt that many people stop shopping that day because of a few people demonstrating. I doubt it causes them to question their consuming habits in general, either. I think it would be more effective to target specific businesses that have particularly

Here's an idea, let's all not take a shit for a week to help stop the polution of our oceans or better yet lets not buy any AntiFlag CD's as a way of letting them know they are trying too hard and to STFU!

swing and a miss, looks like about 200 people missed the enitre fucking point to this like said earlier, the point isnt to stop consumerism, bring down the economy (why hurt ourselves) or any thing people have been saying, of course people will buy the stuff later, but thats not the point the point to BND is show companies and advertisers that we wont be hearded like sheep into malls on some arbitrary day that the industry decided wants us to shop why is the day after thanksgiving the first shopping day? not becuase anyone figuered out it would give them a head start. Becuase the industry told you it was and offered you grand illusions of sales (but you know you'll spend more, i mean cmon u cant let all those sales go to waste right?), and you followed so if you will, continue to shop on black friday, i hope all you nay sayer show rest of comment 3+ Replies
