Will Ferrell options Dr.Frank's "King Dork"

Will Ferrel has reportedly optioned Dr.Frank's novel, King Dork. Ferrell and parner Adam McKay (director and co-writer of "Talledega Nights") founded the company – Gary Sanchez Productions -- earlier this year, partnering with Paramount / Vantage to make indie films.

Their first release is the martial arts comedy "Footfist Way," which they plucked from the Los Angeles Film Festival. After executive Chris Henchy read King Dork, the company decided to make the cult novel the first storyline that Gary Sanchez Productions will develop entirely on its own.

The novel was written by Frank "Dr.Frank" Portman, ringleader of Oakland pop-punk outfit The Mr. T Experience and Frank is already working on the follow up.

Cool! Congrats to Dr. Frank for making it to the big time. Let's just hope he doesn't abandon MTX all together now.

As a side note, Lookout Records, just because he's getting money from this doesn't mean you can stop paying him.

That's awesome I have been wanting to read this and this makes me want to even more because with all this recognition this is getting it has to atleast be a decent read. I like Ferrell so I'm looking forward to seeing how this develops.

whaaaaaaat? That is ridiculous. This has to be a dumb internet rumor or joke taken seriously. I love Dr. Frank / King Dork, but I don't think it would make a good movie, let alone in Ferrell/McKay style.

This is kind of interesting, but tons and tons of books get optioned and even if they do eventually get made, it can take years and years.

Ferrell was attached to an adaptation of A Confederacy of Dunces a few years ago. Other people who had been attahced to the lead role include Phillip Seymour Hoffmann, John Candy, and John Belushi (to give you a sense).

I wonder if this will ever get made.

With that said, A Confederacy of Dunces is the funniest book ever written and that Will Ferrell would have made a terrible Ignatius.

I agree. COD is fantastic. In fact, it's so good that I don't think there's an actor alive who could do any justice to Ignatius.

I hope they never make a movie of COD. Not because I want to keep it at a cult-status -- I tell everyone I know to read it -- but because I don't think it would translate well. ALTHOUGH I think the writers of Arrested Development would be a good choice to write the script -- their humor is a very similar style to the "wackiness" of COD.

I thought his best performance was either in that movie or in Old School, but everyone only remembers Anchorman and Ricky Bobby (Ricky Bobby just cause its relatively recent)

Yes. It was funny, but not non-stop funny. It was a better film than anything else I've seen Will Ferrel in, though.

This is fantastic news. I thought the book was fantastic and I have a feeling it'll make a good movie if it's done as an independent film. I think the major studios may have some issues with the catholic school girl's oral fixation.

Optioning just means you buy the rights to make an intellectual property such as a novel into a movie.

You don't have to make the movie. You just have the rights to make the movie. Sometimes, people option books just to sit on the rights so a major label has to buy the rights from whoever optioned.

this sounds so wonderful, but I am nearly positive that it will turn out horrible and probably get Dr. Frank mad at Will Ferrel for ruining his book with the movie when the movie bombs and everyone hates it. Will Ferrel can't play a high schooler and this book isn't really at all the style of Will Ferrel.

Just because his company bought the rights doesn't mean Will Ferrell will star in it. I haven't read the book yet but from the sounds of it, I think Judd Apatow would be a solid choice to helm the bitch.
