SIRIUS satellite radio to launch punk channel

SIRIUS satellite radio has announced that next Wednesday it will premeire a long awaited and much requested punk channel. The new selection will be on channel 29. No word on what the name of the channel will be, or what exclusive content it may offer.

The decision to create a punk channel almost certainly stems from the growing popularity of competitor XM satellite radio's punk channel, FUNGUS.

Actually, for Fungus alone (I am not a fan of O&A or Stern), XM was lightyears better than Sirius. If they do up the new punk station right, I might reconsider Sirius' appeal.

I havnt listened to it much but I remember hearing the falcon,briefs,teenage bottlerocket,etc. the only time its not good is when they try and TOO 'punx' and play the casualties and bad 80s hardcore and what not.but overall its good.

I hope they don't have all those Jackass assholes on 29. I can't listen to Faction due to the fact they constantly play rap and bad metal/rock on the channel. Another reason why it's tough to listen to is that idiots like Jason Ellis an Bam Margera think they are some kind of radio personalities. Jason Ellis constantly bags on great bands like the Bouncing Souls but has to play them. Bam is just and idiot and whoever thought Jackass would translate over the radio is solely mistaken. Tony Hawk is okay because he does play punk, but for the most part the channel isn't very good. Sirius on a whole is a great product though.

It'll be interesting to see what Sirius does with their punk channel, but I'm not switching as long as XM has baseball.

I am interested to see who they get to be djs. They should try to get some east coast people, becuase as far as I know, Fungus only has west coasters. Mabey I am wrong, though, have only heard satellite radio once.

They should get people who actually know the music. My main problem with Keith Roth's old Punk Yard show was one, the name was so stupid and he kept on playing absolute shit like Monster Magnet on a punk show only because a guy in the band was in a punk band YEARS ago. That kind of logic made no fucking sense. Marky Ramone is good except that I don't think he knows half of the music he's playing and he talks AFTER EVERY song pretty much. It gets to be a bit much even though I am a huge Ramones fan.

who the hell pays for radio? This satellite radio crap is such a scam. The artists don't see a dime from those spins, the public has to pay a monthly fee plus a new receiver, and that would be the only channel I would listen to, so it's really not worth it. Anything these idiots will air will be everything I don't want to hear or already own. I'm really not into paying a fee to make up for the lack of commercials. It ain't right. And, it ain't ok.

That's bullshit. BMI, ASCAP and SESAC count those plays just like they do on terrestrial radio. And they're probably getting more money from satellite airplay than from terrestrial radio, since satellite radio isn't encumbered by the narrow formats and/or FCC broadcast standards that are killing terrestrial radio,

Not to mention exclusive content like Howard Stern or O&A, no commercials, complete NFL, NHL, NBA coverage, etc.. Sirius and XM are so much better than terrestrial radio that it isn't even worth arguing this point.

Saying that paying for radio is stupid is just like saying paying for tv is stupid. I don't know anyone who doesn't pay for cable or satellite tv.

sorry to keep replying to these, but I spent 2 years hocking sat radio and I read up on it alot, XM and Sirius pay more in royalties than all other media outlets do. So actually, the artists, or at least the labels see something. Plus i'm sure it's not cheap to LAUNCH A SATELLITE INTO OUTER SPACE. It's the price of one cd a month. Well worth it. As for not playing anything you like, it depends on what you are into, but I can usually find at least 2 or 3 channels playing a song I like at any given time.

I prefer XM to Sirius, mostly because XM has Fungus and The Virus as well as far less repetitious playlists, but I am interested in seeing what Sirius does this punk channel, they'll probably shit all over it with annoying DJs like they do most of their other channels, though.

The artists don't see a dime from any radio or mtv play anyways, cause theres nothing left after liscencing, royalties and advances. At least for bands on majors anyways. They make their money on tour.

Satellite radio can be considered "corporate" yes, but at this point, it is almost renegade. Artists like Rancid, Marky Ramone, Eminem, Litle Steven, etc. program their own shows and channels.

The music choices on satellite really are great. Hair Nation and Hard Attack on Sirius, for example, is unlike anything anywhere on regular radio. You just can't hear that stuff anywhere on Claer Channel controled radio.

This is fucking awesome news. Satellite radio - Sirius, especially - is way, way better than anything terrestrial. For all the shit about it being "corporate," it has much more punk than any other radio channel/provider.

Alt-Nation and Faction already play Rise Against, Rancid, NOFX, Bouncing Souls, Anti-Flag and a shitload of others all the time, so I'm pumped to see what they do with a full-time punk station.

AWESOME.

I was recently given a Sirius satelittle radio, so I just hooked it up a few weeks ago and was a bit disappointed to find that Faction plays punk mixed with emo and hip-hop, making it tolerable only 1/3 of the time. A few of my friends have XM, so I became increasingly jealous of their access to Fungus.

Glad to hear Sirius is doing a straight punk station!

To ASSHOLE FACE who says that artists don't get paid from satellite radio doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about. Artists are paid for every song played ... they're called ROYALTIES. Satellite radio has to make a deal with ASCAP & BMI for the rights to play the songs. ASCAP & BMI then turns around and pays the artists.

These bands aren't making any money from regular radio. Regular radio plays 30 min worth of commercials an hour and play nothing but NFG, Simple Plan and My Chemical Romance. They would never give Anti-Flag, Bouncing Souls or even Dropkick Murphys a chance on the station because of the content.

SIRIUS Satellite is the best thing going and I'm glad I pay $13 a month to get no commercials on the music stations and get to hear the way the song was intended, unedited instead of this fucking clean edited bullshit they have to p

in 6 months, sirius has turned me on to more good music than terrestrial radio has in 20 years. that alone is worth the monthly fee. and i'm not only talking about punk music. theres a bunch of great channels--- underground garage, disorder and all the classic rock and country stations. where else are you going to hear radio broadcasting the sounds of great music like love, reigning sound, ween, or the mummies? and i'm really starting to dig on shit that i never bothered to listen to like steely dan, captain beefheart, paul simon and pink floyd. I even got the muppets programmed to my memory so everytime a muppets song comes on, the motherfucker alerts me. how cool is that? get with it faggots, its not about one measly station that may or may not cater to your preference, its about the 100+ channels that leave you with a smorgasboard of choice! also, the nba coverage is just

why is everyone so sure this channels gonna suck? They've done a great job finding DJs that know there shit with other channels especially the undergound garage (channel 25). Yeah, the faction channel (with the exception of the marky ramone show) is basically an extreme sports channel and we know how gay that sounds. I'm sure the new punk channel will be legitimate and if they ever...... ever, play good charlotte, i'll suck all your dicks.
