Traditional Haiku, or Hokku, was based on 5,7,5 but modern (particularly contemporary English) Haiku is more freeform.

You really are a dumbshit aren't you? You look it up on Wikipedia (yes, I googled your cut and paste answer), and then proceed to post a line that justifies my original post.

Read what you posted again (as well as the reaminder of the section on Wikipedia), if it helps you should bring it to your English teacher for help. The point being made is that there is tension between traditionalists and those with looser views on the artform. To that end, what you posted states that it is difficult to narrow in on one defining characteristic (such as 5-7-5). Your posting goes on to state some common properties, which I admittedly skirt all-together.

The technique of cutting.

The cutting divides the Haiku into two parts, with a certain imaginative distance between the two sections, but the two sections must remain, to a degree, independent of each other. Both sections must enrich the understanding of the other.

To make this cutting in english, either the first or the second line ends normally with a colon, long dash or ellipsis.

The seasonal theme.

Each Haiku must contain a kigo, a season word, which indicate in which season the Haiku is set. For example, cherry blossoms indicate spring, snow indicate winter, and mosquitoes indicate summer, but the season word isn't always that obvious.

Please notice that Haiku-poems are written under different rules and in many languages. For translated Haiku-poems, the translator must decide whether he should obey the rules strictly, or if he should present the exact essence of the Haiku. For Haiku-poems originally written in english, the poet should be more careful. These are the difficulties, and the pleasure of Haiku.

You should try to understand when you are conversing with someone much more knowledgeable than yourself in a given area and just walk away rather than cutting and pasting Wikipedia text. Given your apparent misinterpretation of the entry, I would venture a guess that it will happen to you regularly in life, so early recognition is your only means of preventing further awkward social moments.

p.s. - I know some VERY rich people who have nothing better to do with their time than drink expensive cognac, smoke expensive cigars and have 'haiku battles', where they go back and forth in a battle similar to those seen by rappers, but each haiku needs to build off of a theme presented by the prior poet. Tons of fun. If you get one and WarioWare it's hysterical to watch up to 12 of your friends try to do all the ridiculous minigames trashed. Also, Resident Evil 4 and Call of Duty 3 are incredible on the system if you're a more "serious" gamer.

the wii is great, and alot of fun, but the ps3 will eventually win the war. xbox 360 uses dvd's which are 8.5 gb's. ps3 uses blu-ray discs, which hold 25 gb's. they are already having trouble fitting gta4 on the 360 dvd's. get a wii or a ps3
