Media: American Steel "Sons of Avarice"

American Steel have posted a new song from their upcoming debut for Fat Wreck Chords. The record is titled Destroy Their Future and is due out October 02, 2007. It is the follow-up to Jagged Thoughts which was released in 2001.

This whole (Young) Pioneers thing is gettting old. Yes, they are rad, but most .orgers only try to get cred by using their name because Against Me! referenced them. Had it not been for that then 99% people who mention them would never have herd them at all. If AM said that (Y)P sucked, everyone of those posters would be bashing that band.

Great song. This band has absolutely killer vocals, and I know a lot of current folk punk acts have a similar approach, but they all sound inferior in my opinion.

I don't know what is wrong with me. I can't get into all of this folk-punk, there are about 20 of these bands that sound exactly the same in my opinion. I like Against Me mainly because Reinventing Axl Rose is such an amazing record lyrically but bands like American Steel, This Bike is a Pipe Bomb, Defiance Ohio, evven the Lawrence Arms (to some extent), all of these bands are making pretty much the same songs with the same sound. I don't get it. I am really into the Revisions (http://myspace.com/therevisions) but that is probably because I love the Observers and it is more acoustic punk. Can someone explain to me the intricacies of folk punk. I just don't get it.

i wouldnt describe american steel or the lawrence arms as folk punk. punk rock is just fine.

I guess I like to classify punk into sub genres. I like to punk bands into either the pop-punk, punk-pop, rocknroll punk, billy type punk, street punk, 77 punk, 82 punk, folk punk, hardcore, powerpop, etc. etc. genres. I would put a band like American Steel and Lawrence Arms into the folk punk category (I know they are not all folk punk but they are closest to that genre).

Seriously dude, there is other music in the world besides Fat Records and major label bands. Look at your last FM. You may think my comment was dumb but your taste in music is just horrible. Your top artists include the Lawrence Arms, Sublime, NOFX, Lucky Boys Confusion, Leftover Crack, Lucky Boys Confusion, Rancid. Please go to your local punk record store and ask for some good records.

Larry Arms formed in 1999
This Bike is a Pipe bomb was formed in 1997
Defiance Ohio formed in 2002
Revisions formed in 2004
the Observers formed in 2002

...so, of the bands you mentioned, who's playing who's music?

It's not about who's playing who's music. If it was I wouldn't listen to music made past 1990. That is a pretty dumb comment I would say. And the Observers were so much more innovative in regards to punk rock than any of the bands on the list.

so youre saying you like the BAND against me because of the lyrics on ONE album. but that, musically, you dont like the others? how is that possible if they all sound "exactly the same"

Words can overpower music. That is my reasoning behind liking Reinventing Axl Rose so much, it isn't like they created this excitingly new type of sound. There is nothing innovative coming out of the folk punk scene that I know of, just rehashed sounds with rehashed DIY type lyrics. Maybe I am just getting tired of punk, I want something new and exciting that can possibly cause a change and I have seen with standard punk that is impossible. That is why I think Against Me! signing to a major was cool. I may hate major labels but if Against Me! can bring in new fans and these new fans listen to their back catalog and embrace it, that can cause change inside of people and that is cool.

American Steel pre-dated that band by many years, little kid. They were definitely an influence on Against Me; the Steel was pretty huge in Gainesville back in the day.

That being said, I'm not particularly fond of this song, nor the fake-gruff vocals after all the clean singing on their last album and then Communique. We'll see how the album is, though.
