Thrice talks to the LA Times about "The Alchemy Index"

Thrice recently spoke to the LA Times about their upcoming two albums and four EPs. The record is titled The Alchemy Index: Volumes 1 & 2 and is due out October 16, 2007.

Frontman Dustin Kensrue noted:

I don't know why anyone would want to listen to a band playing the same thing, album after album, Being in a band is like being in a marriage, you have to work at it to keep it up.

According to the story, the album will include "skittish electronics, bludgeoning rock riffs and acoustic musings similar to Kensrue's recent solo album." As to their major label experiences, Thrice notes that they aren't looking for stardom:

You can see people make that choice. You can either say yes or no. The people that say no are sitting here.

I ONLY listen to bands that stay the same. That sound is what makes a band "a band". If I wanted to hear different sounds, noises, and ideas I guess I would probably listen to a different band. Last.

if a band is good at the style they do, they will get popular enough that a bunch of bands will show up sounding exactly like them, so they have some room to expirement

I like a little variation. if all the songs are the same, they have no soul or individuality. if they're all different, its dumb because, once again, the band has no individuality. i like how A.F.I. was Progressing until DECEMBERUNDERGROUND, from raw hardcore to a Bad Religion type sound. i also like Ignite's progression.

You see I've accepted A.F.I.'s progression. I remember when Very Proud of Ya came out and I swore to my life that they were my favorite band ever. After a couple of releases Black Sails came out and I actually liked it. Then the Art of Drowning and I have listened to that album over and over and hate the shit out of it to this day. Then Sing the Sorrow and I completely accepted their change at this release. With A.F.I., you see a little change through each and every album. it wasn't over night. Hypocritically I'm gonna end it with.... I HATE decemberunderground!

Say what you will, but these dudes could have totally just stuck to formula and been a hit with Island. Just keep releasing the same shit over and over...be like, I dunno, Bad Religion or some other band that hasn't progressed at all and gotten stagnant. (well, at least those who stayed in punk for more than one generation of bands). They tried to do some crazy ass shit and got all Flaming Lips with the 4 CD release thing and had the plug pulled. They stuck to it and went back to the minors. Good for them.

I'd rather be "stagnant" like Bad Religion and have a kick ass job for 25 + years, then always change my music up and break up after a few years because you can't keep a fan base

I think thats respectable. I mean, seriously, they've already given us a handful of metal albums, one of which was on the poppier side, and then they tried a more progressive approach, which was okay. They should experiment. They're artists.

I respect Thrice for changing their style, I think it takes a lot of guts to try something different when you have a fairly loyal fanbase.
That said, just because you change your style doesn't mean it's better. I don't know enough about Thrice to say if they got better or worse on the last album but I can say that it's entirely possible that their fans liked them because they had a sound and then they disliked the band when they changed their sound.
If you vote for a politician because of his conservative political stance and then he turns out to be a closet, self-loathing homosexual,chances are you wouldn't vote for them. Why should it be any different if a band switches to a style you dislike?

I definately see a bit of AFI progression mirrored by Thrice.
As a band gets older they slow down and thats not cool.
People got into Thrice for the riffage, speed and rocking fucking hard.
That last album was the sort of shit i'd listen to going to sleep not moshing in the pit.
I hope they'll have some awesome fast rocking tunes on this new one but I have a sneaking suspicion that the Thrice has a big let down planned.
