Even when they're not present, Against Me! can apparently stoke controversy. At a recent campus event held at Missouri State University, a local band, Rhythm Sandwich, performed a cover of "Baby, I'm an Anarchist" and caused someone to lodge a profanity complaint.
Apparently, the line "I was burning that fucker And stringing my black flag high" was enough to bring in police. According to Missouri State's Expressive Activity Policy, the Bear Paw is an area on campus that has been designated a free speech zone for all people regardless of their connection to the university to express themselves. However, expression that is obscene, defamatory or incites violence is not entitled to First Amendment protection and not permitted by the policy. This is particularly interesting since the First Amendment is usually used as the definition of the First Amendment. You can check out the rest of the story here. Politics (79 comments)

I thought this was going to be about the band The Police complaining about a shoddy cover attempt. 7+ Replies

Too bad that line was from a band that we now see was lying though their teeth, about their anarchist agenda and have traded their music of substance, to make music of homogenized radio hits, that are blatant ripoffs of garbage and franz-ferdinand. 7+ Replies

I can't quite remember exactlywhy, it's been awhile since I took that class, but the only argument the opossing side would have is invalid in terms of all that 1st Amednment stuff. 5+ Replies

When i first read the headline, i thought that they were talking about Sting's band. I was like "When did Against Me! cover the Police?" Then i read the headline and hated cops still.

I love the headline of the actual news story. "Police respond to F-word". It spells out right in the headline how stupid and useless it is for them to be involved in this.

Good. Universities are a place for education and betterment, not for some young hooligans and other 'riff-raff' to offend young ears with their profanity. I may not always agree with the police but in cases like this it is always better to make an example than hide behind the so called 'freedom of speech'. 1+ Reply

Calm down, you will grow up one day too. Is it lying through your teeth for not believing in something you thought 5 years ago.

What on earth? Swearing loudly in public while singing a song? Yeah, lock him up, throw away the key.

PS, can anyone furnish me with what an Against Me! set looks like these days. I'm seeing them for the first time tomorrow? 1+ Reply

It's pretty clear the real reason police were called to get the band to stop playing a crappy Against Me song. They just came up with a good cover story.
88-fingers-tony (October 25, 2007)
honestly.... most campuses have a designated "free speech zone", however, people get the cops called on them all the time. i sure did.

They should've called the police on the real Against Me, for sucking and face-smashing.
