Bouncing Souls plan digital release for 2008, not CDs

Greg Attonito recently spoke with Late Night Wallflower about his new children's book, I Want for a Walk as well as dropping some hints about a future release from the Bouncing Souls:

We just had a meeting recently to make our plans for next year. The biggest thing that I can talk about is that we don't really want to release a new CD. We're probably going do some sort of digital release. It doesn't make sense to release a CD because nobody really buys them anymore.

The Souls released The Gold Record last year.

Call me old fashioned, but this disgruntles me. Everyone's moving away from physical albums, now. I don't trust computers and devices easily dropped in the toilet to hold all my music. Seriously, this is just like if they got rid of food and converted to pills.

Yeah... if only someone could make some sort of blank CD that we could burn these files onto, giving us a physical form that we can have for backup, play in CD players, etc. Someone should seriously look into this technology.

I'm worried about the impending doom of labels. It will become difficult for good bands to gain exposure. Quality will suffer, because music will make no revenue, so there will be less going into the production and all that other jazz.

Besides, why would I rather buy the music online, then go out and buy the blank CDs, and put more effort into putting it all onto CD when I could just go buy the proper album at a store? Makes no sense to me.

Free downloading will be detrimental to music in the future. When the labels collapse, it will become harder for bands to gain exposure. The industry will be overrun by even more stinkfest music.

Labels, in general, pick up quality artists and give them exposure. Without labels, any kid with a four track and a farting dog will get the same type of exposure and a talented artist with great songs. Also, less revenue = less production expense = lower quality. Everything will be localized, and many great bands you would have discovered otherwise will go unheard by your ears. And besides, if you were to find them, the recordings wouldn't nearly be of the same quality.

Realistically, the labels are not going to collapse anytime soon. That's like predicting that because GM and Ford lost billions in the US last quarter we should all be planning what to do without cars. Only more exaggerated if thats possible.

True, but some labels have started packing it in, or downsizing. Especially on the indie scene, where revenues are crucial. The more people download, the quicker labels have to close.

I agree, I really wish they'd release this on CD and vinyl. In my personal opinion, downloading music detracts from the whole experience. I love buying an album, putting it in my CD player, and reading along to the lyrics and looking at the artwork.

This is all well and good, but you can only get CDs pressed (for the most part) in multiples of 1,000. That's too many for a lot of smaller labels.

Plus, how exactly are labels supposed to decide exactly how many CDs they need?

Based on the amount sold on past releases for the band. Or if its a debut, based on what similar sounding bands usually sell. If the record takes off and starts selling, your print more. Simple economics my dear Poor Boy. Milton Friedman would be all over this shit.

Yea seriously i like this idea. Any vinyl you buy off of It's Alive records comes witht he vinyl and a cd. I live It's Alive because some of my favorite current bands are on the label and they have all different vinyl colors plus the cd and a poster. Its a win win!

Maybe it is from a purely cost / profit perspective but it is really fuckin obvious that the meat of the item is the artistic input via music, and you are still getting that if you download.

Personally as long as I can download an album for free I will not pay for downloading it. However I buy a lot of music still vinyl and cd's to have a physical copy. I don't really care for mp3s but I'll download them if I want to test out a band or can't find their albums in a store around me. Or if it's albums I don't think I'll listen to many times. I have a lot of downloaded music probably about 40 gigs worth (all for free thanks). But I also own close to 600 cds and 300 lps. So if people stop making their albums available in a physical format then I stop buying, simple as that.

If you want to collect a physical copy of an album, you'd better buy the vinyl, becasue CD's are rapidly becoming obsolete. Does anyone find it odd that the format CD's replaced (vinyl), will in a sense replace CD's? I can't think of any other technology that was replaced by its predicesor.
I'm hoping this release, in whatever form it's sold in, is recorded and put out sooner than later. I loved The Gold Record.

I agree with Themessenger, and would like to add that outside of a few little scenes there are not that many people that buy vinyl. Most of the artists that have a fanbase of vinyl collectors are completely irrelevant when it comes to the music business at large.

Not that I’d even LISTEN to a Bouncing Souls album, let alone buy one. However, if a band that i listen to started doing this I doubt I’d ever pay for an mp3. If they didn't print cd's at all, I’d consider investing in a record player, but somehow it seems a bit late for that.... i guess eventually I’ll end up joining the masses who use torrents as their sources for music, which is a shame.....

I have a sweet laptop-deck. It's pretty pricey, but I just stick my laptop into the laptop shaped slot and it sucks it in and starts playing.

My friend's cousin was telling me about this deal that takes stuff off of a computer and plays it on various device through a tape deck adapter or broadcasting across fm signal, sometimes even through a direct line.

I forgot what the thing is called, though... sorry.

Oh, another complaint I have against the rise of downloading as the source of all music: computers cost a lot. And they fuck up and become outdated after 5 years. Why do I want this to be the source of music? It's much more convenient to just buy the CD. If you're CD player quits (I would like to add how stereo systems typically last much longer than computers... unless they're made by JVC), it doesn't cost nearly as much to replace it.

I'm just getting sick of our dependence on the internet for everything. Every. Fucking. Thing.

I don't buy this at all.

1) You can get cheap computers now. It's not 1995. Granted, it won't be cheap, but then again good CD players that don't get broken are not cheap either (I should know -- I went through about five CD players until I finally bought a MP3 player).

2) CD players are gradually being replaced with MP3 players which is awesome. Cutting down on space, combining media onto one source, and allowing more features than a CD player. That's awesome. Buy a MP3 player instead.

3) Maybe you should push for a section in a physical store where you can walk in and buy MP3s from a booth in case your computer doesn't work. That seems like a reasonable alternative to saying "Well, it's computers or nothing as far as the file-holders for MP3s go."

1) I have a panasonic boombox that cost under $100, and I'm going on year 5 with no problems. There are lots of great CD players. It's easier and cheaper to buy a CD player than a computer. Regardless of how much, this is favourable towards CD players.

2) Great, I can put all of my music on one small device that could be easily broken, misplaced, or stolen. One source is just so much better. At least if my CD player breaks, I still have all of my music.

3) The chances of this being profitable are minimal. When it comes to downloading MP3s, people value the convenience of doing it at home. Besides, like I said before, they might go in, put new music on their player, only to drop it and damage it.

I still like the whole package. The artworks, the lyrics, it all contributes to the album. It's more than just music. I

I'm moving in a month, and I'm not going to move my 300 cd's with me...just my computer - it's a lot more convenient. But at least I know if my computer breaks or something, I'll still have the cd's.

I'd also like to point out that I think there is a difference between fans of huge mainstream bands that download albums that run $14 in stores,because they don't want to support major labels and people who listen to bands on independent labels. Many of us are happy to shell over $10 to own the actual album by our favorite bands. What's works for Trent Reznor doesn't necessarily apply to the souls.

Another good point. Small labels need revenue. This helps them give relatively unknown talented bands exposure, and helps them make the albums sound that much better. Besides, an artist (who we shall name Fred for the sake of this example) who's writing music that hardly anyone gets to hear will likely quit a lot sooner than the guy who instantly reaches wide audiences. Which is why we need labels to pick up Fred so that he continues to write. If no one cares, the artist will no longer feel encouraged to perform.

Call me fucking lame, but I've been buying a lot of shit off iTunes. I went out to Target yesterday and picked up the new Birght Eyes (Lemme alone, I like my indie rock). I have been buying shit off iTunes for so long I forgot how good it feels to actually hold the entire concept in your hands. The book, the case, everything. And there is so much more to the album than just having the tracks. Artists put a lot of time into the look and feel of a record. You get a much fuller experience when you buy it, if you ask me.

my thoughts on digital media:

i know punks don't like change, but i feel we should be embracing new technology for the innumerable environmental benefits it allows. remember that whatever resources are being used to make the product, you are eventually also creating garbage.

as hard as it was for me to embrace initially, digital media will help a lot. i like my records and books as much as the next guy, but as we approach this age of saturation where we have so much stuff that we don't want to get rid of for historical sake (think of libraries, archives, personal collections), we have the technology now to own digital files and we should harness the opportunity to stop filling our dumps. I have started buying most of my music on downloadpunk.com or itunes (i only use itunes if the label doesn't do digital distro any other way) and I don't have the "g

Uhh... that's the only thing they know how to do? That's pretty sad, man. Sorry to say but I doubt that it takes a lot to be a clerk at a record store. Don't think it's much different from any other kind of store, aside from the sweet perks.

Things could be a lot worse now. In Pakistan, most video rental shops are going out of business because of DVDs. Now, you could ask why don't they just replace the VHSs with DVDs and be in good shape? Well, it costs about $2 American to buy a pirated CD. No real way that DVD rentals can keep up. Now, that's a pretty bad situation.

Interesting point of view,

I get your point and all; however the environment isn't really my first concern when it comes to art (especially in the big picture, when you compare the resources used to make cds compared to say automobiles, etc). And there are ways to cut down on the amount of waste produced along side cd's, such as eliminating shrink-wrap (they do this in the UK), and only printing the number of cds that demand requires. Also, keep in mind, not everyone has access to a computer/ high-speed internet connection.

Lastly (although, I’m not entirely sure if its what you intended to mean) you seem to be advocating ending all forms of print (ie books). It'll be a sad, sad day for humanity, the the day books stop being printed. Fortunately, unlike cds/digital media, e-books are nowhere near as popular as physical books, not to mention that they do

i don't agree with you at all, but very interesting take on it.

i'm not sure about other people, but personally i have a hard time reading things online/on a fucking computer screen as compared to on paper in my hands. i don't read half the news stories on this site even, it's just not an enjoyable experience unlike reading a book or a newspaper. i've tried e-books and things a long those lines, but i just can't get into it. i don't know if this is because i stare at a computer screen a lot day in and day out in my line of work or what. does anyone else notice this?

I upload ebooks to my phone and read them. It took a few days reading to get used to, but it's fine now. Plus, its easy to find passages with Ctrl+F. I still read regular books occasionally, but I'm beginning to prefer the digital format...

your problem of reading things on the internet as opposed to a piece of paper and awarding one form of communication more merit thatn the other stems from that familiarity you had when you were younger and the written/typed word was held in an absolute truth. I think that a tangible media carries more importance than a disposable media. in other words, burning a book seems like more of a taboo than deciding to reformat your hard drive. the hard drive obviously contains more information. but, if your hard drive has books on it, it doesnt lessen the blow or magnitude that a book burning carries. face it, the printed word is sacred...the printing press is underrated and will never be replaced. it will never be matched by any other type of media.

I know it seems like it could never happen, but it's possible that things like books, cd's, magazines, newspapers, paintings, could actually become extinct (obviously it would take awhile). They already are starting to put books in a handheld device. And while that's cool and convenient, something about it just doesn't sit right with me.

I agree with you, I was just thinking 4,000 digital for the world seemed very low, so US only makes sense. I would think most people are unlike me and buy CDs (I buy vinyl) and prefer it over digital, so it would be kind of silly to not press CDs. Epitaph probably doesn't spend that much money advertising for The Souls so I would think it shouldn't take high CD sales to turn a profit.

right on, im willing to bet that more than that paid to see the bouncing souls on their gold record tour. the unique part of this scene is that a band can make more than half of their revenue through tours while keeping the show prices low/reasonable, as opposed to radio acts outside the genre

I think the "veteran band" thing probably works against them in terms of sales. I wonder how many people there are who would pay to go see the Souls live but who don't follow their new music. Like the Rolling Stones sell out stadiums all over North America and Europe, but who gives a shit about a new Stones record?

the only time i pay for digital only releases is when it's a smaller band that just straight up can't afford to release it any other way, or if i can't find it on a torrent site. most digital releases cost close to the same amount as the physical release and it just can't be justified.

I hate the new era of digital music of mp3's and ipods and other shit alike. Music has now become disposable. I am not paying for something thats just a bunch of positive and negative charges represented as 0's and 1's on a hard disk platter. No thanks. If i'm paying with REAL money I want a REAL album.

What the hell happens when I want to listen to the music in a car. or on a mates CD player?. I can't, I'll have to either then convert the mp3's into a WAV format which will be a lossy compression. So i'll be paying for something of lesser quality, no fucking thanks.

I saw the Bouncing Souls on Tuesday night, they fucking rocked but hearing this from them really degrades my respect for them.

If you haven't figured out how to make an audio CD from mp3s yet without converting them, you need computer lessons. I'm fairly sure any OS that came out in the last 5 years offers this feature as part of the OS. Worst case scenerio is downloading a decent burning software. Either way, you have the mp3s and can create a CD for $.50 or less.

I'm going to reiterate what I've posted too many times already in clearer terms. Music, like all industries, needs revenue. It vastly improves the quality. It also helps talented artists break free from the clutter and gain exposure.

With download, as many others have said, how many people will pay when MP3s can easily be picked up for free? CDs, on the other hand, give the buyer an advantage. If people want to put the music on their MP3 players, they can go right. And if their MP3 player gets stolen, broken or fried, that's fine, because they have all of their music, with some nice art, and probably a neat lyric book with all of these other liner notes. So, why do we want to get rid of CDs?

Honestly, neither. I've never stolen anything in my life other than hearts! At the same time, I buy ALOT of CDs and I don't download music. I figure if I'm going to have to listen to music off my computer, why the hell should I have to pay for it?

However.

I'll be damned if I pay money for something that, if one other person manages to somehow get a hold of it (or "steal"), my personal information is quite probably attached. That's one of the wonders of DRM, and I seriously doubt that if a "business decision" like this is being made, that it isn't going to have some kind of protection on it.

And while it may be a valid point when you mention "judg(ing) the market correctly ...", for some strange, naive reason, I've always viewed the people that wrote "True Believers" and "Kids and Heroes" as much much more than "sellers". Because if it's Product that the Souls are giving me now, I don't want it.

Music to me, is much more than an advertisement for a t-shirt or beer coozie. If that's what it's all comin

But don't you think it bothers punk musicians, who certainly very few of them can actually live off their music, that 90% of punk kids have this absurd attitude about buying music? It is hard for me to even wrap my head around how wide spread and accepted this entire thought process has become. If I made all this music, like the Souls do, about the topics they write, and their whole thing, and their very strong fan base - and like half my fans though "eh, the band dont need da fuckin money!!!1 punx rok!" I accept your point about DRM music, but that is a decision the musicians have to make, not the fans, and if it costs them fans then I'm sure they will correct the situation... I know that doesn't sound fun, and you may miss out on music, but for me, it is far more important than resorting to the alternative.

I don't think musicians should be painted as sellers / businessmen, but unfortunately, from my perspective, that is what it has come to. To many people have no grasp of the financial ramifications that result from their collective actions. The same people who steal every song they own are the same people wanting artistic integrity. How can kids ask bands to stay on tiny, poor ass lables, when the only way the DIY system can work is if kids actually BUY all their music.

I also don't see the Bouncing Souls as a band who would get too upset over people downloading their music for free...though I'm sure they're not supporters of it either.

I wasn't trying to say that their intention by releasing it digitally was to stop people from downloading it illegally, but I think having the songs available for download makes me, personally, a lot less likely to even think about looking for a torrent... If I can get something on itunes, I will get it, because it is easy for me and they have a large selection of punk music.

My feeling about that last part is, if a punk band wants to give away their music via free downloads, do it like defiance ohio has done. It isn't fair to assume they are okay with it cuz their punk.

I don't know....I don't think having the songs available for download is going to make people less likely to download them on torrent...I mean you still have to pay for songs on itunes. You're probably one of the exceptions to that.

And I think the souls are okay with it judging from what they've done in the past and their attitude towards certain things....not really just cause they're punk.

Not to sound like a crazy person or anything, but the Bouncing Souls probably single-handedly sold more CD's in 2006 than every critically-acclaimed indie release put out by No Idea Records, Plan-It-X, Asian Man, Deep Elm, and Recess Records combined.

I like the Bouncing Souls, but when you start to say things like "we didn't sell enough CD's" when you probably still sold bunches of them... well, you start to sound like a bunch of greedy A-holes.

It's just a guess, really. I'm basing that statement on the fact that 'The Gold Record' debuted in the Top 200 of the Billboard Charts. It also stayed on Interpunk.com's "Best Seller" list for a number of months.

Realistically, the album by itself most likely sold more copies than many small labels sell in an entire year from their entire catalog of releases.

Even if the Bouncing Souls "only" sold 10,000 copies of the Gold Record during it's first week of release, that's still a heck of a lot of copies.

I'm sure there are hundreds of bands out there who would be happy to sell 10,000 copies in a year, let alone in a single week.

There are lots of labels out there who sell brand new full-length CD's for $5.00 to $8.00 (postage included, even!) and still manage to stay in business.

Even MP3 downloads for .99 cents each seems kind of pricey, especially when you consider that there's list cost involved. There's no CD's or cases to manufacture, no artwork to print, and no physical product that needs to be shipped.

"The Gold Record" has sold 31,000 since it came out, according to soundscan. I'm sure Asian Man Records alone sold more than that when you consider they have 3 Alkaline Trio albums and released 8 Queers albums this year alone.

The average Asian Man new release, even from bands like Lemuria or Andrew Jackson Jihad who have fan followings and get generally good reviews, might be "popular" amongst indie music fans, but still won't sell tens of thousands of copies in any given year.

The point I was getting at is: the Bouncing Souls should be thankful that they are where they are. They're on the biggest "indie" label in the world. They put out records that actually show up on the charts (if only briefly). If they've sold 31,000 physical copies of their last record, they've probably also *legally* sold a bunch more digital copies of it. On top of that, they have a devoted fan following that's willing to pay $10 to $15 or more to see them play live, not to mention spend even more money on their t-shir

Alright, for those that don't know what I'm talking about, I was killing time in the mall today before a doctor's appointment, and while in Borders I was browsing through the new issue of A.P., and Ben Weasel had an editorial about how digital releases should be embraced, and we should give the real copies the heav-ho (heave-HO!... I don't know exactly how to spell that).

The jist: what Weasel wrote fucking infuriated me. I download everything, listen to it, and then I go fucking buy ALMOST everything. Music is my life, it's my best friend... it's the ONLY MOTHERFUCKING THING I actually LOVE buying.
I absolutely LOOOOOOVE CDs. Even if it's a one-page insert with the band members names, a "thanks to everyone", and a "copyright..." thing printed inside, and that's all, I love it waaaaaaaaaaay more than burned CD-Rs.

Note to Greg: I still buy CDs. If you put your new album out as a CD, I will buy it. Why? CDs sound better than digital downloads because the audio data is less compressed. Also, once I buy the CD then I can listen to it on any device I want...no encoding or file protection. If I want to digitize it, I can rip it to my computer. I can look at the artwork, read the lyrics and liner notes while I listen to it, and put it on the shelf next to all my other Souls albums. I can also listen to it in my car, since I would rather spend $400 bucks on more albums than a new iPod-compatible car stereo.

Digital releases are fine, but as someone who grew up punk I would expect you to remember the charm and value of a physical object held in your hands. You have tons of fans out there who will support you buy buying your CD, so why be so quick to declare the me

The only digital release I've ever bought was the newet Ben Weasel album I'm glad I made a hard copy of it right away because it ran fine on my iPod for 1 whole month & then my ITunes rejected the files & they wouldn't play again until I put the hard copy of the CD in & re-rentered them into I Tunes & never have had trouble with the songs since then. As long as CDs are made, I'll buy them, that way if my PC crashes or my iPod falls in a puddle, I can still have the music that I PAID FOR!!

This is gutting news. I really hope they reconsider releasing a physical format. MP3s are such bad quality. I really like the Bouncing Souls, but probably won't even listen to the album if its only download. To me it doesn't feel right paying for files that are inferior quality and unlike others, I will not download them illegally either as that does nothing to help the state of the music industry, so I guess I won't have the new album to go with all the others! Getting CDs pressed up is pretty cheap, just do a limited amount or take pre-orders maybe?

I love the Souls and always will, but this truely sucks. I enjoy going out and getting the CDs, or getting them for x-mas. I cant get stoked to buy an album via iTunes. It's not fun. You don't get the full art work. You're pretty much missing something when you digitally buy an album.

I know that many bands glance at this site to check out feedback or reviews or whatever - hopefully Greg will see the responses to this thread and reconsider.

I guess I'm one of the old-fashioned luddite sticks-in-the-mud who likes having a tangible product with artwork, lyrics, photos and liner notes, especially in the case of the Bouncing Souls, whose releases are often festooned with Brian Papillion's awesome artwork.

If there's a power failure, a massive computer virus or a giant magnet that gets dropped on my computer, guess what? My record collection is still intact. It's also a LOT harder to steal my huge album collection than it is to steal an iPod or a laptop. I could go on and on, but many of these points have been made in the posts above this one.

So bands and labels are going to find a way to reduce costs by giving you the choice as to what physical media the music goes on? If I end up paying 7 bucks for a full album going forward through Chunksaah, I'll be happy. Because I can then choose to burn that CD or put it on my iPod.

I love music and I'd personally rather have everything on my iPod because it gives me the flexibility I want. If you'd rather have a collection of CD's, well then hot damn, now you can burn it. Bands will probably add in more digital video and JPEGs of artwork, pictures.

Sure, you'll lose a familiar format and now there's no longer album artwork like they're used to be, but I can guarentee that our parents felt the same way about the switch from Vinyl to Tapes/CDs.

The Souls have been an awesome band for 20 years. I dont know why they would do this to true fans who actually still purchase vinyl or cd's. It totally sucks. Somebody stole the portable cd played i had in my car with The Gold Record in it, i went out and bought the vinyl. They better sell vinyl!
