Slayer to work on new material in 2008

According to a report from Metal Underground, legendary thrash/metal pioneers Slayer are already looking at a new album for 2008.

Right after the New Year, Slayer plans to start working on new material for their eleventh studio album, intended for a 2008 release, and will tour the world to support it. Slayer recently received their third Grammy nomination. The Slayer track, "The Final Six," from the band's 2007 Limited Edition Christ Illusion was nominated in the category of "Best Metal Performance."

Slayer's two previous Grammy nominations were for 2002's "Disciple" from the album "God Hates Us All," and last year's "Eyes of the Insane," for which they took home the Grammy Award.

Even though none of them have completely gone down the tubes (at least not to the same degree as Metallica), Slayer, Kreator, Testament, Exodus, Anthrax, etc etc need to retire already. The former really should have gone out with a proper bang back with God Hates Us All. I mean, it came out on 9-11, for Christ's sake.

have you actually heard testament's last studio album? the gathering is a fucking HUGE thrash record. admittedly, they've been far from quick with making a follow up, but they've got paul bostaph on board, and the rest of the original line-up, so i'm betting it's going to be pretty fucking good.

I definitely agree that The Gathering is a solid record with some great tunes (DNR might even be my favorite song of theirs overall), but that doesn't mean the old guard shouldn't make room for younger groups to expand the genre. Plus, that record came out quite a few years ago. How many decent comeback albums is too many?

the younger groups fuck it up most of the time though. you need the backbone in place for any growth, especially in that genre.

Good point. However if the older bands weren't garnering all the attention and sales there might be more newer, solid progressive thrash bands out there, as opposed to joke throwback bands like Municipal Waste (whom I still really like).

On the one hand, I want to say "Who cares?" because some older bands can still crank out good tunes; but on the other, more puritanical side of things it's all about art at the end, and thrash/speed metal has definitely been all about convention for a good 20 years now. Maybe this dead horse just needs to be buried...?

As much as I love Slayer, this news pales in comparison to Sacrifice recording for a 2008 release and they will also be playing Winnipeg as part of the Manitoba Metalfest on March 29th. Seriously... Sacrifice...

I read that Kerry once said that Sacrifice sucked. Slayer is good, but I'll take Sacrifice ANY FUCKING DAY over them.

It's more "mature" than any band on Nitro Records ever, kiddo.

That being said, most Slayer fans who aren't over 30 are indeed tools. Though their recent output has been decent, it sure as hell isn't worth the attention of any casual or new listener. However, if you'd said that in 1986 you'd have been really, really wrong.

First two are definite, but I might replace "Rattlehead" with "Looking Down The Cross". And if you listen to riffs around the 4:00 mark, you'll notice they sound very similar to the famous opening riff on "Raining Blood", which Slayer would put out a couple years later.

Honorable mention goes to Countown to Extinction, mostly for the Friedman guitar solo (as always). The lame voice-over is really unfortunate, though.

I honestly hate Killing... Mustaine was WAY too fucked up and isolated to write solid tracks on that mess.
