Barack Obama has won the Iowa primary. Half of voters chose Mr. Obama, a first-term African-American senator from Illinois beating the frontrunner Hillary Clinton by a significant margin. Of particular note was the makeup of voters: 22% were under age 29, five percentage points higher than in 2004. More than half were first-time caucus-goers.
On the Republican side, was former baptist minister Mike Huckabee who won largely on the strength of late-breaking support from fellow Christian conservatives. Huckabee has come out strongly against gay rights and abortion but does play in a band named Capitol Offense. 2008's election is perhaps the most significant American general in many years, with not just Americans, but the entire world looking at the outcome. Chalk up Obama's win to Oprah's support. He was behind in the standings until she came on the scene. 5+ Replies

As much as I like the guy, I think Hilary's more qualified. Obama hasn't even finished his first term in the Senate, while Hilary has been in politics for decades. I'll probably end up having to vote for him, though, just to keep the seperation of church and state intact. 12+ Replies

The Iowa Caucasus are a fucking joke. It is an undemocratic waste of time. Do you know who was picked in the 88' Iowa caucas for the republicans? Pat Robertson over Bush Sr. Christopher Hitchens has a great little article on it: 4+ Replies

on the Democrats side, i've always loved Kucinich's ideas... the problem is Kucinich himself. he's unelectable based on appearance alone. yea that sucks that that even matters, but the fact is that it does. even with really good ideas, its hard for the general public to take him seriously. 6+ Replies

Fact: Californians don't pay attention to the primaries...why? Because by the time it reaches us it doesn't matter. Okay, maybe that's an exaggeration but I hate carrying the most votes of any state and always getting skipped over because our primary is so late. Glad to see Iowa gets to determine who my fucking candidate is. 9+ Replies

You know that band that your friends were into for years and for absolutely no reason at all you never got into them and then one day about 10 years after you should have started really listening, you finally get it? Mine's Face to Face. Never got into them "back in the day", despite the fact that I had alot of exposure to them from friends, comps, ect... Currently, loving them. But I only have Don't Turn Away (fucking amazing, especially Disconnected) and How to Ruin Everything (not quite as good, but still great, especially The World in Front of You). 5+ Replies

I wish the media and people in general would pay more attention to Edwards. I want change as much as anyone else, but I don't think Obama translates to change just because he's black, or a fresh face, or because he gives great speeches. He's in the same pockets all of the old white guys are in. All the pundits talk about are Obama and Clinton, even after last night when Edwards placed higher than the latter. Edwards spent a tenth of what Obama spent and a seventh of what Clinton spent in Iowa and, with very little press coverage, placed second. Despite what the media is saying, if you have basice math skills then you know that 8 or 9 points is not a landslide victory. If you like Obama's stances, check out Edwards' and you might like him more. 4+ Replies

Ron Paul, Obama and John Mccain (maybe a Mccain/Liebermanare ticket would satisfy some) those are the only Canidates i would support, however thats just within in the two big parties, the way things are going my vote will probably go to a third party candidate again. 1+ Reply

This is seriously great news, its probably the push that's going to send Obama to the nomination. If he has a strong following in NH, then he will win it. The real story here is HRC getting only a third, and the ever so progressive Edwards getting second (Not to mention Mitt getting pushed aside by the southern preacher). Either and Obama or Edwards ticket in 08 will be stronger then anyone attached to HRC, since nothing is going to get a current disinterested GOP base out to vote then the Clinton name. On the GOP side it looks like Thompson and Paul are finished (not that I expected anything otherwise) I’d still bet that either Romney or Giuliani get the Gop nomination, but now its impossible to write off Huckabee. And don’t forget to watch Mccain in NH, it’s do or die for him there. It’s almost impossible not to watch Obama give a speech and n show rest of comment 1+ Reply

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but I think there's a set-up for some kind of McCain/Huckabee or Huckabee/McCain ticket going on. In every interview either of them do, they praise the other and put down Romney. There are some states like Iowa McCain doesn't stand a chance in and some like New Hampshire where Huckabee's odds are just as slim, but I get the impression that they don't care which one of them wins as long as Romney's getting beat.
David_Arquette (January 4, 2008)
It's important to note that both Biden and Dodd dropped out of the race. Also, although Kucinich hasn't dropped out yet, he's openly endorsing Obama as a "second choice".
