Good luck... all those arguments about "having something tangible with wonderful artwork" don't seem to apply to tapes, and they're not nearly as convenient as CDs. 2+ Replies

They still make cassettes? Or did this guy take a time machine, travel back 20 or so years and get some?

i think this is pretty cool. as i am still unexposed to the Measure [SA] and Potboiler, and since my cassette collection has dwindled to zero, I might grab a couple of these.

Tapes are still very common and important to the underground music community which is something most punknews readers will not / do not understand. Props for posting this story. Some of the best bands around today release tapes that have much more personality that a lot of cd's you get today. Limited edition painted tapes, awesome artwork and fold outs, and the sound of punk rock you can only hear on a cassete I wouldn't trade that shit for the world. Not to mention all the great tape labels... check out Fuck It Tapes everyone. Great music. Long live the mix tape.

As long as I get to hear more POTBOILER songs, that's all that matters. love that band.

tapes is an awesome idea and i would definetely buy them.hell, i still listen to my old mix tapes as well as albums i bought back in the early 90s..great idea!

I still have and listen to a lot of tapes from back when, so I can't really say anything bad about them. I like CDs more though. Anyone remembers when Underdog Records tried to bring back 8-tracks?
JoeyMagnet (January 6, 2008)
Mixtapes are the best, I'm all over this trading board. I just need a new tape player and everyone can get a Tom Waits mix from me.
sub360 (January 6, 2008)
this is dumb. tapes are basically obsolete. a lot of new stereos don't even come with tape players anymore.

Okay, this is a waste started by some artsy, collector types. Tapes sound worse than CDs. They are more expensive. The technology to play them is not sold as openly anymore. There is very little room for artwork. You cannot skip tracks. You cannot upload them your tracks to PCs/mp3 players. It just makes no sense. Y'know, CDs are some of the greatest things the underground community could ask for. I could probably record music with the same quality as many bands (Defiance Ohio, for example) with my laptop, a few mics, and some cheap (often freeware) recording software. Then I could burn endless copies of my music, print out some artwork for it (on the same computer), and sell it. It's so amazing to me that anybody could make decent-sounding music. Why ANYBODY would make their lives more difficult with tapes is beyond me. Though I don't support show rest of comment 5+ Replies

Does anyone remember ROIR records? They were a tape only label and released some very influential albums in punk. Peter and the test tube babies, Bad Brains, Dickies, New York Dolls and others that I can't think of right now. 2+ Replies

Never was there a better feeling than discovering an album you borrowed off your mate was just under 45 minutes, and would therefore fit perfectly on one side of a TDK D90 (£4.99 for 10 in Argos)...

Jeff bolt is a dude and kevin nunn is one of the four coolest people in the world (the other three being brian, angela and masshole). This is an awesome idea and if you don't get it, then you don't understand what DIY and punk rock are about AT ALL. But then again, you are posting on punknews.org, so whatever. 2+ Replies

I was just given a tape the other day by a coworker of Jerkwater (Matt Skiba's first(?) band). Too bad I have absolutely no way to listen to it.

the thing i liked about my car when i bought it was the cd and tape player combo. | Features
