Rhino plans Joy Division "Best Of" collections

Rhino has scheduled the release of a new best of collection from Joy Division. The US version, due out April 29, 2008, will feature 14 tracks from the band's two albums (Closer and Unknown Pleasures) as well as their Peel Sessions.

Europeans will be given a much larger package, with a UK release due out March 24, 2008 that will feature two discs with an interview, the entirety of their Peel Sessions and live recordings of "Transmission" and "She's Lost Control."

The band's late singer, Ian Curtis, was recently the subject of a well-regarded biopic, Control, directed by Anton Corbijn. A DVD of that film is expected in June.

there's this girl who waitresses at one of the restaurants in cambridge. she's got a big joy division chest piece that reads......you guessed it....."LOVE WILL TEAR US APART."

like, seriously? getting a tattoo of the most well-known lyrics from a band? that's almost as bad as an "ANARCHY IN THE U.K." tat.

and now every time i see anything regarding joy division, especially after that movie came out, i can't help but think of that chick and laugh.

uhh....if by SG material, you mean she TRIES to look like one, then yeah.

to be completely crass, she'd probably be like a 5/10 without the monroe/eyeliner/tat combo keeping it moderately interesting.

i'm a terrible person for laughing at people trying to adopt a subculture. i'm really no different. :[

Nah, SG girls are always kind of gross looking, like they're trying way too hard. I have the same problem with the traditional blonde bimbo porn star with fake tits and collagen.

Agreed in the general sense, but the point of the US version at least is to release one cd for a casual fan to purchase and have as the sole representation of Joy Division in their collection. The cd is for people who don't have anything by the band and only want to purchase one album. So, those people wouldn't be interested in a larger and pricier set.

That said, it's fucking stupid.

but why not just buy Substance as that one single cd? substance has been out for more than 20 years already.

My guess is because Substance doesn't really represent the two main albums, as "She's Lost Control" is the only song from either Unkown Pleasures or Closer that's on it.

This is truly a band that should be listened to in album format, this is just unnecessary. We already have the two real albums, An Ideal for Living, Permanent, Still, the Heart and Soul set, various live releases and deluxe editions... cashing in at its worst.

Actually, I saw the documentary on this band recently (not Control, Joy Division), and Peter Hook said just that himself: "The two works were Unknown Pleasures and Closer. Everything else is merchandising."
