Unfortunately, this is what happens when you sell the rights to your music publishing before you achieve any clout or success. It's really too bad. This is the reason Strummer waited years for his contract with Sony to expire before recording The Mescaleros stuff.

I watched a video interview with Joe Strummer, shot near the time of his passing. He warns young bands to thoroughly read contracts before signing. In the interview Strummer definitely regretted being so naive in their early days. The Clash probably signed away the publishing rights of their catalog long before this song was written.

honestly, i never really liked "should i stay or should i go." it seems to be the one clash song that people who have no idea who the clash are, still seem to like. i'd be willing to give this to them.

now, if it was the american idols singing say...."safe european homes," "police on my back" or "white man in hammersmith palais" well.....there'd be some fucking blood spilled.

see, now I thought the use of clash songs in nissan and levi comericals would have joe strummer's ashes rolling over in the ocean, but this fucking takes the cake. I've never watch one episode of "american idol", but none of the fucktards that actually appear on that show have any right to even cover a song by what is in my opinion the greatest punk band of all time. I really hope all who were involved in that cover die in a horrible inferno while getting raped by bears.

Scary fact: More people voted for the 2004 American Idol than voted in the presidential election. I'm sure the same stat applies for '05, '06, '07 ect

who cares, its not as if the Clash's legacy is threatened by this at all, they're legends and they'll always be that way. they were also a major label band who signed away the rights to do shit like this, so theres not much that can be done about it, anymore than if American Idol in 2030 decided to do something with an old Against Me song

Say what you will, but these commercials that the Idols do are the shiznit. Almost makes the show worth watching. It is like a good horror movie, where you feel sick on the inside but can't look away. It makes me embarrased for the world and yet feel better about myself at the same time. Kudos, Idol kids...Kudos.

American Idol has also been butchering some of my favorite Beatles songs over the past two weeks, but no one on punknews will care about that because from the punk rock viewpoint. the beatles are 'overrated', but for some reason the Clash are gods! Condemn me if you will, but I honestly have always viewed the clash as the beatles of punk rock, two bands who are legends in their genres that madereally good pop/rock n' roll music that stood for something!
