The top 11 finalists of American Idol recently recorded a version of "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" for what appears to be a Ford commercial. While Punknews.org typically refrains from commentary, this video is potentially offensive to Joe Strummer's memory, Mick Jones' life, and UFO-piloting aliens so watch at your own risk.

how stupid this is aside, first nissan and now ford, i guess if you have the clash in your commercial, your car will sell better. 3+ Replies

Unfortunately, this is what happens when you sell the rights to your music publishing before you achieve any clout or success. It's really too bad. This is the reason Strummer waited years for his contract with Sony to expire before recording The Mescaleros stuff.

honestly, i never really liked "should i stay or should i go." it seems to be the one clash song that people who have no idea who the clash are, still seem to like. i'd be willing to give this to them. 4+ Replies

see, now I thought the use of clash songs in nissan and levi comericals would have joe strummer's ashes rolling over in the ocean, but this fucking takes the cake. I've never watch one episode of "american idol", but none of the fucktards that actually appear on that show have any right to even cover a song by what is in my opinion the greatest punk band of all time. I really hope all who were involved in that cover die in a horrible inferno while getting raped by bears. 2+ Replies

if there would have been message boards back then everyone would have shit-talked the Clash for being a sell-out majorlabel band... 2+ Replies

stupid-ass american idol..destroying another great band's legacy with your shit 'singers'...it's bad enough you ruined 'a message to you rudy' like 3 years ago..but now you are besmirching the great name of the clash? bastards....

OH NOES! American Idol ruined a shitty song!
fallingupwards84 (March 20, 2008)
who cares, its not as if the Clash's legacy is threatened by this at all, they're legends and they'll always be that way. they were also a major label band who signed away the rights to do shit like this, so theres not much that can be done about it, anymore than if American Idol in 2030 decided to do something with an old Against Me song 3+ Replies

Say what you will, but these commercials that the Idols do are the shiznit. Almost makes the show worth watching. It is like a good horror movie, where you feel sick on the inside but can't look away. It makes me embarrased for the world and yet feel better about myself at the same time. Kudos, Idol kids...Kudos.

The commercial didn't make me want to buy a car.
Jesus_H_Christ (March 20, 2008)
I actually found that hilarious. Honestly, it doesn't matter if they did a cover. Don't let it affect you so much. The Clash legacy/aesthetic is in no danger from being soiled....
gravedanger (March 20, 2008)
Calm down, everyone. It's going to be okay. I wish they would do this more often. It's more entertaining than the show itself. I would love to see them cover "Filler" by Minor Threat for a Capital One commercial or what have you. 2+ Replies

My third grade christmas pageant had better production values. And better singing.

American Idol has also been butchering some of my favorite Beatles songs over the past two weeks, but no one on punknews will care about that because from the punk rock viewpoint. the beatles are 'overrated', but for some reason the Clash are gods! Condemn me if you will, but I honestly have always viewed the clash as the beatles of punk rock, two bands who are legends in their genres that madereally good pop/rock n' roll music that stood for something! 5+ Replies

This is retarded, and American Idol is a waste of time, but anyone who feels 'offended' by this really needs to stop being a pussy. 1+ Reply

I think Propagandhi songs should be used to advertise those price rollbacks at Wal-Mart. Makes about as much sense as Ford and Nissan using The Clash to sell their econightmares. 1+ Reply
