Videos: NOFX (as "Half-FX") live at South By Southwest

Alternative Press has posted a live video of 'Org faves NOFX performing as "Half-FX" at this year's South By Southwest Music Festival -- the gimmick being instead of playing full songs, the band would play only the first verse and first chorus of a song before stopping and moving onto the next one. AP were able to capture roughly the first half of the band's set before the battery on their video camera died; you can view the 22-minute live video below.

they've probably played 5,000 shows. i think for them, this spices things up a little and makes it a little fun. plus, they aren't there to win any fans--SXSW is a venue for up-and-coming bands or the pitchfork crowd. i say this is a great idea.

Ha, really was a stupid idea. Linoleum is a really great song, I havent heard it in a while and forgot. Nofx is a funny band though because half of every album is good, but the other sucks.

I have to say the NOFX schtick is getting a bit old. I get that they're old and they don't give a shit what everyone thinks and blah blah blah. Still, it seems as if finding new and interesting ways to provoke their fans (such as Half-FX, or playing the first 2 minutes of the Decline on the live album) are getting a bit tiresome. It's one thing not to care and be annoying, it's another to go intentionally out of your way to do it.
It's a bit of a let down because they're better and funnier than that.

Yeah...I fully respect Fat Mike, Fat Wreck and some of NOFX's hijinxs ("Our set list consists of every song that starts with 'S' " for example), but I mean this is just unfunny and half assed.

Would have been better if they hadn't told everyone beforehand. I really wish they would stop trying to copy the sort of shit the 'Mats pulled "back in the day", they just seem to suck at it.

Plus, speaking as someone who was in attendance (fuck, I videotaped that damn clip), there were people in the crowd who, after 15-20 half-songs played, STILL didn't get what was going on. So the joke was definitely understood by some and lost on plenty others.

Also, side note: There were, like, 18 million fights during this show. It was weird.

It depends. Sage Francis is amazing live. So's Aceyalone.

I just don't like a DJ in place of a live band or a clear pre-taped recording. Usually the bass is pumped so loud it drowns out everything.

And I hate that half song shit. So many songs have guest rappers that the artists can only perform 1/3 of the fucking song, anyway.

Rap and hip-hop sounds pretty sweet in small clubs, rather big open spaces. If they play all the music of a CD or decks, it will suck, but I saw Public Enemy last year with a full backing band and it was pretty sweet. Seeing them in a couple weeks again...

I saw KRS-ONE in Toronto a few weeks ago and he basically freestyled and played off the crowd for an hour and a half. It was really entertaining.

Don't get me wrong, I like rap. Atmosphere live is a great thing, especially when it's Slug and a band but it would be nice to hear more than one song done in its entirety. Not verse-chorus-wait for the beat to change-new song-repeat.

I have yet to see the video linked here, but I definately like the fact that they are among the best as far as changing things up on each tour for their setlist. How many punk bands out there would still play songs off their version of Ribbed. Which brings up the point that Green Corn is fucking amazing. Has anyone ever heard them play S&M Airlines? I love that song too. As far as Wolf in Wolves Clothing, my favorites are: 60% (both of them), Leaving Jesusland, The Man I Killed, and Seeing Double at the Triple Rock. The rest is merely OK, at least in my opinion.

After actually watching this and seeing that El Hefe has no idea what the hell is going on this is pretty entertaining. Still...if I was there I might have been kind of frustrated. That was great when a guy threw a beer at Fat Mike and left and Fat Mike called him a Rancid fan. A tip of the cap to both sides for that exchange.
