Michael Savage plays Dead Kennedys song "in some respect for" Sen. Kennedy

Far right radio host, Michael Alan Weiner, better known by his pseudonym Michael Savage recently played Dead Kennedys' track, "California Über Alles" to insult US Senator Ted Kennedy who was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Savage explained himself, saying the song wasn't supposed to be mocking:

The poor guy's been suffering for years, you know? Unfairly he's been accused of alcoholism, but we see now that it was something much more deep-seated. And so, to cut this out in some respect for Ted Kennedy, here's a tune coming at you from the Dead Kennedys. Go ahead and play it, please.

After reading from the lyrics of "California Über Alles, No gloating today, no laughter, all serious. You don't joke about a man's cancer. I do it, but I won't do it today; it's something I will not do. You know I'm playing the Dead Kennedys not to mock Ted Kennedy. It's just appropriate, that's all."

Quite the opposite. The "is" at the end breaks the format of the classic comment and also makes no grammatical sense.

No, this is entirely symptomatic of the bully culture on Michael Savage's show. There are plenty of bullies on any side of the political spectrum. Nobody has the market cornered on mudslinging.

My favorite part is when he refers to himself as a "punk rocker" or something. Y'know, I wish I actually listened to this assholes show. He clearly knows nothing about DK, so I could've called and said:

"Hey, did you know that the Dead Kennedys were the first right-wing punk band ever?! Glad you like them. Can I request that you play a song of their's? Yeah, its called "Night of the Living Rednecks." You'd love it!'

He befriended and traveled with Beat poets Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Stephen Schwartz, also an acquaintance of Savage from this time, reported that Savage possessed a photograph of himself and Ginsberg swimming naked in Hawaii and used the photograph as sort of a "calling card."[1][6] Savage maintained a correspondence with Ginsberg consisting of 10 letters and a trio of postcards across four years, which is maintained with Ginsberg's papers at Stanford University.[7][1] One letter asked for Ginsberg and Ferlinghetti to come do a poetry reading, so others could "hear and see and know why I adore your public image."[3] One postcard mentions his desire to photograph Ginsberg in a provocative way, though Savage states that this correspondence is actually a forgery created by gay detractors.[1]

I actually have listened to his show probably 50+ times and read his book. He is MUCH more insane than any of the other mainstream right wing talkers (Rush, Sean, Ann, ect.). The man is fucking insane. Also, when I was driving through West Virginia one time (of many) a couple years ago, I went through an area where he was one of the handful things I could pick up on the radio and he was on several AM stations.

If you're on here to complain about how insensitive Michael Savage is, then you better pick a fight with whichever member of the band thought up the name Dead Kennedys.

The name was meant to offend and shock (much like Jello Biafra as a stage name). Michael Savage meant to offend and shock.

While they are on different sides of the political spectrum, you can't separate one as acceptable and the other as inappropriate.

That's a pretty fair assessment and it's surprising it wasn't brought up earlier.

I think the only reason it doesn't resonate is that the band took up the name ten years after Robert Kennedy was killed, so there was something of a detachment due to the passing of time, etc. combined with the fact that the band is thirty years old, so it doesn't seem like someone is making a decision to rub salt in fresh wounds, which is what this incident comes off as.

I agree. It's not like they chose the name in 1963. Savage's choice of putting it on the air when he did and in the context he did was basically just a dick move.

I'm a raging dickhead, but that doesn't mean I condone anyone wishing pain, harm, or death on another human being. Making a joke of someone WITH A FUCKING BRAIN TUMOR, especially on a national stage, is something I can't get behind.

Don't get me wrong - I think it was tasteless, and I dislike Michael Savage in general.

I think anyone offended should realize, though, that it's not like the guy found a band with a perfectly innocent name and took it out of context or misinterpreted a song - he chose to play a band that years earlier had already decided on a tasteless name that just happen to apply to this situation.

I've never heard this guy in the Northeast, though I generally only scan AM radio when in the car, but one time I drove across the country and somewhere in Western Pennsylvania or Ohio, we started listening to this guy and started tuning in all week, because we couldn't get over how (unintentionally) hilarious and nasty this guy was.

It doesn't matter who it is. What matters in that someone in the hospital is probably not going to live very long, and then someone with one of the biggest national audiences of any medium goes on the air and mocks them and implicitly get stoked on their death.

It wouldn't matter if this were Dick Cheney, the man in politics who probably the closest to pure evil. What matters is that he is pulling for the imminent death of a man who may very well be temrinally ill. And that, friend, is Mest Up.

You've really got to take Michael Savage with a grain of salt. He's all about shock talk radio and this kind of stuff is just par for the course. His whole bit is that he is an angry bitter man disenchanted with the establishment.

You've also got him completely wrong in terms of political spectrum. He's not a left winger or a right winger. He's a populist and that's part of his whole appeal to certain crowds.

I've listened to Michael a few times in the car for pure entertainment value and he rails against EVERYONE in the establishment both left and right. Just listen to him when he gets on one of his anti-Bush or Rumsfeld rants. I'm pretty sure I heard him coin Bush as the "worst president in history" several times and the Republican party as filled with "liars and thieves".

I'm not saying I agree with the guy or even like him.

I think calling him "far right" is totally appropriate. He might criticize Republicans, but it's usually from a conservative standpoint. You're right that he plays this "populist" role, but that doesn't mean he's any less conservative. Bill O'Reily plays the same game.

Yeah, it's usually from the conservative standpoint most of the time but not always. You are correct, Bill O'Reilly is another populist that reads from a similar playbook.

I think the mischaracterization I'm trying to correct is that he's a Republican radio personality rather than a populist radio personality.

If we didn't talk about it, this guy wouldn't have a job. That's what they do go really far to the right or the left so that people go "i can't believe he said that." In reality if we just didn't give a krap we could invest our time into people with positive ideas and a moderate political mind.

Where are the Dr. King's? Where are the people who actually do something with their lives and thus earn the right to be listened to?
